Portrait of a an

committing murder

I

N this type of murder, you don't use guns. Or dag-

gers. Or poison.

In fact, you don't do anything. You just continue to
live in your own comfortable, fenced-in little world,
not seeing, not hearing, not heeding. That's "mur-
der by indifference."

The purpose of this appeal is to save you from commit-
ting "murder by indifference!'

And here are facts which cannot leave you indif-
ferent:

There are only 1,400,000 cjews left alive—barely
alive—in all of Europe. The torture and the butchery
and the loss of dear ones has left them inert, physi-
cally and spiritually.

The plight of the remaining Jews of Europe is
far, far worse than that of other war victims. Most
of them are not receiving any aid from intergovern-
mental sources. They do not ask for preferential
treatment. They hope merely to be raised to the level

One'envivin$0/

of survival. They cry out to us. not for special favors,
but for life itself.

The blunt truth is this: unless every Amer-
ican Jew souls quick and more-than-gen-
erous help, many of these 1,400,000 men,
women and children will die as surely as
the sun rose this morning. •

The need and the anguish are unprecedented; there-
fore your help must be unprecedented., We tell you
frankly, you must discard all previous standards of
giving. You must sacrifice luxuries ... you must give
out of savings if necessary.

Because it conies right down to this: Give ... and
they live. Don't . . . and they die.

The decision is yours. Remember that when you
have your checkbook out.

The United Jewish Appeal national goal is $100,-
000;000. Sure it's a lot of money. But every penny

of it is needed. And it cannot come from anywhere

else but yow.
This fund will help clothe and feed the homeless,
hungry Jews of Europe. It will bring them medical
and spiritual care. It will start listless, starving chil-
dren on the road back to health and freedom. It will
help many of these refugees to reach Palestine and
other lands.

So do these things . . . and do them unstintingly:
WORK for the United Jewish Appeal. Work as
you've never worked before. Give us your time—
your effort—your services. Write or phone us and
say, "I want to do my part to save 1,400,000 lives!"
SACRIFICE! Can you honestly enjoy all the good
things of life amid so much suffering? Do you feel
quite right about being so comfortable, when over
a million of your brothers starve ... and live in fear?

GIVE when you are called on. Unprecedented gen-

erosity is needed for these unprecedented needs. Your
1946 gift will not be used as a standard in any future
campaign.
