AMERICA
A shakeup is expected in the Immigration
Service of the Department of Justice, as a result
of the parole and deportation of Dr. Rudolph
Mattfeld, Nazi party member, who sought per-
manent admission to the United States. The
Immigration Service was ordered to ascertain
the number of other aliens in this country who
have been paroled as was Dr. Mattfeld.
By. a , vote of 339 to 4, the House of Repre-
sentatives approved contempt charges against
Dr. Edward K. Barsky, chairman of the Joint
Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee of New York.
The action was requested by the Committee on
Un-American Activities, because Barsky re-
fused to furnish it with records of his organi-
zation.
The OPA has authorized an average increase
of four-tenths of a cent per pound in retail
ceiling prices of kosher beef cuts, effective
April 8. The increase wa granted to compen-
sate kosher meat retailert for higher wholesale
prices resulting from wag boosts given to meat
packers.
Getting the Jews out of Poland is far more
urgent than relief, according to a report by
Louis Segal and Dr. Samuel. Margoshes, dele-
gates of the World Jewish Congress, who have
just returned from studying Jewish conditions
in Poland and DP camps in Germany.
French Communists, during the summer of
1945, adopted Jew-baiting as an integral por-
tion of the "party line," in an effort to stir
group hatred among the French people, and
thus heighten their bid for power, during the
post-liberation confusion, Donald B. Robinson,
former U. S. Army Civil Affairs Officer in
France and Chief Historian of the United States
Military Government, reveals in an article in
the April issue of American Mercury.
A large-scale prograin of economic rehabili-
tation for displaced Jews in Germany has been
launched under an agreementORT (Or-
ganization for Reha&litation through Training)
and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilita-
tion Administration, it is announced by Dr.
David Lvovitch, vice president of the World

the United States occupation zone of Germany,

Stuttgart during which a survivor of Oswiecim
death camp was fatally shot, and four other
Jews were wounded. The directive claimed
news of the occurrence would inflame Jews in
other DP camps. Jewish inmates are furious
already about the allegation by United States
military officials that the Jewish victims of
the Stuttgart raid dealt in the black market.
This slander whitewashes the criminal shooting
of defenseless Jews by German police, the Jew-
ish papers state.
PALESTINE
The foundation stone for the new Ramat-Gan
theological college was laid by Chief Rabbi
Herzog. The three-story building will cost
$80,000.

Jewish situation in Poland had

Polish government in exile in
London, he 'declared.
Dr. Tennenbaum asserted that
the Warsaw regime is "sincerely
well meaning, free from racial
prejudice and really a govern-
ment of the people." He announc-
ed that his federation has sent
$800,000 worth of clothing, food
and medicines to Polish Jews.
He said that there are only 70,000
Jews in Poland.
A Polish League to "Fight Ra-
cial Hatred" has been organized,
he said, by representatives of
Poland's six political parties and
social and religious groups.

on the life of Jewish refugees
from Poland in Russian camps in
Siberia was given here by one of
the refugees, Leah Halberstam,
at a press conference arranged
by the Vaad Hatzala, the relief
organization of Orthodox Jews.
The first Jewish refugee to ar-
rive in this country from Siberia,
Mrs. Halberstam said that the
Jews who were evacuated by the
Russian authorities from the Ga-
lician part of Poland to Siberian
camps at the outbreak of the war,
appreciated the fact that the Rus-
sians did not separate families,
were completely free from anti-
Semitism, did not interfere with
religious observances. ,
"What surprised me," said Mrs.
Halberstam, "was that at no time
was any comment made about
our religion. Everybody knew we
were Jews, but no mention of it
was ever made by any official,
nor was there any discrimination
of any kind."
