U. S. Palestine Probers Favor Entry of 100,000

Split with British Group
Reported Over Immigration

American Members of Inquiry Committee United in Pro-
posal for Immediate Large-Scale Movement of Refugees;
New Type of Administration for Zion May Be Asked

.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland.—Astonished beyond expecta-
tions by the Jewish needs in Europe, it has become known
here that the United States members of the Anglo-American
C ommittee of Inquiry on Palestine are submitting proposals
for the immediate admission of Jews in numbers much
larger than had been expected by the British members of
the committee.

In the clash that has developed between the two groups, it
is believed that the American members may insist upon the im-
mediate admission of more than the 100,000 displaced Jews in
Europe in whose behalf President Truman and other world lead-
ers have intervened.
Urge Use of Army Facilities for Refugees
While British members would like to see the rescue efforts
spread over a period of years, the American members are of the
opinion that the slashing of red tape and the use of army facilities
will enable the settlement of large numbers of Jews in Palestine.
Even more serious splits are expected when the problem of
long-range settlement of Jews in Palestine is discussed. On this
point, too, it has become known that the American members are
in favor of large- scale long-range Jewish immigration.
It is possible that a new type of administration may be pro-
posed for Palestine. While this is favored by the British, who would
nevertheles5eetain Britain's role as administrator, the Americans
oppose the outmoding of the mandate.
U. S. Delegation United in Its Opinion
.
Of particular interest is the information received from reliable
sources that the American delegation is united in its opinion, in
spite of the previous beliefs that it would be divided, with some
of its members siding with the British. This has astonished the
British.
At this time, it is not known whether there will be two re-
ports or whether the entire committee will decide upon united
action in solving the problems of the Jewish survivors.
