Since the inception of our pro-

gram we served 70,000 service-
men. Our functions ranged from
arranging weddings for service-
men to caring for their newly
born.
Our war records committee un-
der Rabbi Joseph E. Krickstein
has completed its work through-
out the Mt. Clemens area with
dispatch and enthusiasm.
I should like to reproduce a let-
ter.
Recently Col. Bradford A.

Field, wrote to me as follows:

A Survivor's Report Admonishes
Us Not to Forget 'Experiment E'

EXPERIMENT "E," a Report from
an Extermination Laboratory, by Leon
Szalat. Dither, Publishers, New York,
1945, 284 pp., $3.50.

A Review by LOUIS PANUSH

A recent pamphlet, "Balance
Sheet of Extermination" by Jacob
Lestchinsky, published by the Of-
fice of Jewish Information in New
York, presents the cold statistics,
and stark facts of the horrifying
accomplishments of the Nazi an-
nihilation of 6,000,000 Jews in Eu-
rope by starvation, slave labor,
poison gas, live steam, by being
buried alive and by fire, by freez-
ing and brutal beatings, and by
other unbelievably inhuman
methods.
Americans are trying hard. to
forget.
But Americans must not for-
get. We Jews must not forget.

Keep Conscience Awake
Experiment "E" (Extermina-

tion) will help to keep America's
conscience awake. Although it is
not the story of Maidanek and
Treblinka, it presents sufficient
evidence to condemn the Nazis
and the Germans (is there a dis-
tinction between Nazis and Ger-
mans in light of the great Jewish
and European tragedy?) who un-
curbed and unbridled perfected
the techniques of extermination
in the concentration camps, later
to apply them in all their ghast-
liness in Maidanek, Treblinka and
other camps of extermination.
The book is the story of the
author's experiences in the con-
centration camp of Sachsenhau-
sen, near Oranienburg, a proving
ground for Nazi techniques of ex-
termination. Leon Szalet was one
of the few who emerged alive
from one of these camps and his
story is a fully documented re-
port on the bestial researches of
the Nazi experimenters on hu-
man guinea pigs, especially Jew-
ish guinea pigs.

Blockfuehrers' Glee

Here is one incident:

"-'We had been arrested on the eve
of the Jewish New Year; this fact im-
pressed the orthodox as a judgment
of God. Convinced that their last hour
was at hand, they would not part with
their tefillim (phylacteries). . . The
discovery of the tefillim put the block-
fuehrers into a mood not only of rage,
but of hellishly gleeful anticipation . . .
They took the offenders out of line,
tied them together in couples with the
leather straps and ordered them to
dance. Photographers took pictures ...
It was heartrending to see the pious
men in their orthodox dress, with their

long, fluttering beards, hopping about
awkwardly, executing comic spins and
continually tripping over each other.
But the blockfuehrers held their sides
with laughter . .Suddenly the Kom-
mandant indicated. that he had enough.
The dance was broken off and the
merry-making ended with the slaughter
of the. dancers. The assembly square
rang with the shrieks of the tortured
men . . ."

Many of these Jews could have
been saved before Germany de-
clared war on Poland. Let us look
into the British Consulate in Tier-
gartenstrasse where we will see
a scene that was repeated by the
British hundreds ' and thousands
of times afterwards (Remember
the Struma!): "A long line of
hunted, desperate, hopeless peo-
ple who had been waiting for
hours to apply for permission to
enter one of the British terri-
tories (Palestine is also consid-
ered by the British as their terri-
tory—L. P.).

Non-Aryans First
I saw a British officer enter

the waiting room, heard him
say: 'Non-Aryans step over
here, please,' and then I saw him
attend to the German Aryans
first. And the non-Aryans waited
day after day in a separate line
in vain.
Leon Szalet, who emerged alive
from Sachsenhausen, thanks to
the heroic efforts of his daughter
and to sheer good fortune, also
has a message to give to us: "We
suffered in order that those who
came after us might be spared
such anguish."
The conscience of the world
was not awakened from its leth-
argy in time. Six million Jews
were exterminated and the world
cannot bring them back to life.
However, the conscience of the
*world ninst be kept 'awake now,
lest the world forget its debt to
the dead. "Experiment `E' " will
help it not to forget.

look back to the years of fruitful
activity on behalf of the service
men who were trained, stationed
or passed through Selfridge Field
on the way to the fighting fronts
to win the war for a decent
America and human dignity. -
Our JWB 'Army and Navy Com-
mittee was set up in March, 1942
with a membership of 20, which
represented the entire community
of Mt. Clemens. In the course of
performing our specific USO-
JWB functions, we have the deep
satisfaction of knowing that we
made many thousands of Jewish
and non-Jewish servicemen feel
at home by extending to them
our hospitality. To this day we
are receiving hundreds of letters
from servicemen overseas and
from every part of the country,
letting us know how much they
enjoyed the kindnesses we have
shown them.
Our religious program commit-
tee, under Mr. and Mrs. Sam Le-
vine, attended to the Friday eve-
ning services at the post chapel,
providing military worshippers
ranging from a minyan into the
hundreds with refreshments and
companionship on a group and
individual level.
Our hospital visiting committee,
headed by Mrs. Lawrence Marks,
visited hundreds of hospitalized
servicemen throughout the war
.years, working in , cooperation
with the Red Cross Gray Ladies.
Odr homes hospitality commit-
tee under Mrs. Paul Litvin has
clone a grand job.
Early in 1942 we were asked to
sponsor a regular Tuesday eve-
ning program at the Mt. Clemens
USO for which we provided food,
hosstesses and entertainment. We
carried on this program until
June, 1945. Lawrence Marks, Mr.
and Mrs. Louis Davis and Mrs.
Doris Barnett were responsible
to a large extent for the success
of that program.
Beginning with January, 1945,
until today,' we are carrying the
responsibility for the food pro-
gram at every Wednesday night
dance at the Selfridge Field Serv-
ice Club and we serve an average
of 300 to 400 service personnel
and hostesses.
At the request of the Field's
Commanding Officer, we fur-
nished and served food to 1,600
servicemen and guests at the

WARSAW, (JTA) — Karl Ktt-
panik, former commandant of
the Oswiecim concentration camp
in Poland, where the Germans
are estimated to have extermin-
ated between three and fouk
million people, at least half of
them Jews, has been sentenced
to death at Kattowice.

"Inasmuch as I am leaving this sta-
tion for a new assignment I would like
to express my appreciation for services
rendered by you and your organization
during my tour of duty here.
"Unfortunately organizations render-
ing a personal service to military per-
sonnel are not always given full credit
due. It is regretable more concrete and
tangible recognition cannot be given.
However, your greatest reward is in
the knowledge that you have made the
life of some soldier a little happier.
"Despite the fact that the war is
over and we are in the process of de-
mobilizing our military forces there is
still an urgent need for the continuance
of such a social program. In reality
this need is greater today than any
previous period prior to the cessation
of hostilities.
"Thank you again for your coopera-
tion and interest in our recreational
program."
