Winston Churchill, leader of the loyal
opposition to the present government of
,< F4!
Great Britain, has informed Dr. Abba Hillel
Silver, president of the Zionist Organization
of America, at a conference arranged be-
tween them by Bernard Baruch, that he will
not desert the cause of Zionism.
Mr. Churchill is reported to have in-
formed the eminent leader of the Zionist
movement in this country that, if necessary,
he is ready to stand alone in his own party
on this issue.
One of the early backers of the Zionist
movement, Mr. Churchill has stood out for
years, up to the outbreak of the war, as a
great defender of Jewish rights in Palestine.
He opposed the White Paper. He fought for
free immigration of Jews to Palestine.
He has not risen above "expediency" in
defending our position while he was the war-
time Prime Minister, and we were unsuc-
cessful in securing his help in opening Pales-
tine's doors for Jewish immigration immedi-
ately after the war.
But his latest declaration is welcome.

Questions About Jews

Who made the first English translation
of the Bible?
The first translation of the complete Bible

into English was made by the reformer John
Wycliff and his associates in the 14th century.

How did the Blood Libel originate?

The accusation that human blood was demand-
ed for religious purposes first was raised against
the early Christians in Rome. Later the infamous
lie was applied to the Jews who were charged
with using blood for Passover Matzos. This
libel has brought untold sufferings to Jews
throughout the ages. Last week an attempt was
made to introduce the libel in the Nuremberg
trial of the Nazis.

What is the meaning of the term "Mar-
ratios?"
It is a Spanish term, meaning swine, and
was applied to Jews who remained faithful to

Judaism privately, while adopting Christianity
through compulsion. • The Hebrew term

15 chapters of which deal with the Exodus from
Egypt.

FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

1

Dear Boys and Girls:
In three weeks, Jews everywhere will be pre%
pared to usher in the Passover festival. It will
be a great occasion for our people everywhere.

We shall be reviewing again the story of the
Exodus from Egypt. The survivors in Europe
will again utter the age-old hope: "Next year in
Jerusalem." You and I and all their kinsmen
everywhere will dedicate themselves anew to the
task of helping these people to end their miseries
and to secure the homes they want—in Palestine.
Passover, the great festival of freedom, teaches
the basic elements of liberty to the entire world.
The Biblical sentence from Leviticus (26:13) is
one of the foundation stones in the battle for
freedom and justice. It reads:

"I am the Lord your God who brought
you out of the land of Egypt, that ye shall not

be bondsmen; I have broken the bars of your
yoke and made you go upright."

Would that these bars of freedom were al-
ready broken for the million • and a half Jews
who have survived in Europe!
It is not too early for all of us to start think- •
ing of Passover's lesson.
We must recognize the value of Passover's
message and we must begin NOW to prepare for
the great task of helping the underprivileged.
A great drive is now in progress. In Detroit
alone we must raise $2,000,000 for the United
Jewish Appeal. I am confident that all of us will
live up to our obligations and that young and
old will help the great Allied Jewish Campaign
drive.
A pleasant Sabbath to all.
UNCLE DANIEL.

THE LESSON OF

JEWISH PATIENCE

(From Rabbi I. Newman's
"Hassidic Anthology")

Two neighbors, a Jew and a Gentile, . being
without employment, resorted to begging from
door to door. Close to Passover, the Jew instruct-
ed the Gentile, who knew Yiddish, to pretend
to be a Jew, and thereby receive an invitation
to a Seder. The Jew also instructed his friend
to follow the host's example during the ceremony.
The Gentile was duly invited to a Seder and, on
arriving at the house, smelled with delight the
appetizing foods. He hoped soon to partake of
them since he was famished. To his disappoint-
ment, however, the food was not served. Instead
a glass of wine was given him and it whetted
his appetite still more. To his disgust he was
given some bitter herbs soaked in salt water, was
compelled to dissemble reading the Haggadah,
and then received more wine. At last a piece of
matzah was given to him, and he anticipated that
solid food would soon follow. Instead he was
offered some horse-radish and later a horse-radish
sandwich.
The hungry man could endure it no longer.
He rose angrily frOm his place and, with impreca-
tions upon his host, hastily left the house as
hungry as when he entered it. A few hours later
his companion arrived at their sleeping quarters

and with great surprise listened to his disappoint-
ing experience.
"You impatient fool," exclaimed the Jew. "Had

you waited another moment, what beautiful
viands would have been yours! If you pretend
to be a Jew, you must learn the first requirement
of being a Jew—to be patient and to trust in the

future."

ENGLISH A LA MODE: A PASSOVER JOKE

The Sunday School teacher, with the approach
of Pesach, commenced explaining the Passover
lesson, asked the pupils to use the matzos in a
sentence.
"We eat matzos at the Seder," said Milton.
"Matzos are made without salt," said Haika.
The teacher asked for one more sentence, and
Avrum, who had not been long in the country,

voteered:
Time matzos on."
