Husseini Threatens Jews,
British at Inquiry Session
Appointed Chairman of
Joint Defense Appeal
'Explains' Mufti's Flight to GerMany as Hope of Gaining
Advantage for Arabs if Nazis Won; Demands Great
Britain Let. Jews and Arabs Fight it Out
• . (Special Cable to The Jewish News)
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Charging that the war was "a Jewish
war" and -that Germany was not the Arabs' enemy, Jamal Husseini
opened the Arab case before the inquiry committee.
Husseini, who recently was permitted to re-enter Palestine after
. nine years of exile for his participation in the anti-British and anti-
Jewish terroristic activities, presented four Arab demands:
•1. An independent Palestine under Arab rule; 2. abrogation of
the mandate; 3. abandonment of Zionist aims; 4. stoppage of Jewish
immi gration.
Questioned by Richard Crossman, Husseini tried to explain the
Mufti's collaboration with the Nazis; stating that the Mufti fled to
Germany because he had no other place of escape and was only
stringing along with the Nazis in order to get something out of them
if they won.
Husseini described the Zionists as invaders, adding that as he
listened to Ben Gurion's Zionist den:lands on Monday he thought
he was "hearing Hitler speak from the grave!'
Hinting at Arab violence unless the British withdraw from the
country, Husseini said that if the Anglo-American committee can not
solve the Palestine problem with justice the British should with-
draw and permit the Arabs and Jews to solve the problem by force
if necesSary. He added that he did not believe it would come to
force because "if the British stopped pampering the ZioniSts" they
would become friends with the Arabs. He said that he thought 30
per cent of the Jews would emigrate if they thought Palestine could
not become the Jewish National Home.
Judge Hutcheson, the American chairman, remarked: "Your
views are the same as the Zionists'. You feel that only you can be
trusted to take care of Your own fate. Therefore we can not take
at face value either claim, can we?"
Responding to a question by Judge Crum, Husseini said that in
a Palestine Arab state "Jews would have the same rights as in other
Arab countries." As this drew a burst of laughter from the audience,
he added quickly: "I mean in democratic Arab countries."
It is understood that the inquiry committee may tour Palestine,
especially the Jordan area, and inspect sites there and the proposed
JVA installations.
