Variety of Events to Feature
Center Purim Celebrations

Pre-Purim Dance
At Center Sunday

.

Purim dances, parties and fun
programs will highlight the
events at the Jewish Community
Center in. March.
The 30th Holiday Hop, on
March 10, will be .a Purim dance,
-featuring Stan Howard's Orches-
tra and vocals by Sally Romine.
This. Sunday, at 2 p. m., the
junior members of the - Center
will give- a Purim party. Parents
are invited to •enjoy the fun pro-
gram which will include com-
munity singing, acrobatics, •box--
!ing, dancing, ganies and • a
magician act. All former Habonim
campers will have a brief re-
union. Refreshments- will be
served. -
A Purim celebration will take
place Sunday, March 17, at 2
p. m., at the 12th St. Council
Center. Children in the 12th St.
neighborhood are invited to at-
tend and to dress in suitable
costumes. Prizes will be given
to those in most interesting
costumes. In addition, there will
be booths where the guests can
try their skills. A feature of the
afternoon will be the reunion
of those who attended the 12th
St Summer Day Camp last

season.
A grand march. and a corona-
tion ceremony will be the center
of attraction at a Purim dance to
be given by the Intermediates on
Saturday, March 16, 8 to 12 p. m.
A girl, selected by a group of
judges, will be crowned Queen
Esther.
The Mothers' Clubs will spon-
sor a Purim masquerade ball at
the Center, Wednesday evening,
March 20. Mrs. William New,
general chairman, will be as-
sisted by the following hostesses:
Bertha Cohen and Rose 'Yogoda,
12th St. Club; Mildred Lefkowitz,
Davison Club; Lea Lutsky and
Ella Schneiderman, Dexter Club;
Rose _Schuratyz, • Center Club;
Bessie -Prog, Fenkell Club; Mil-
dred Litwak and Sophie Kaner,
Woodward Club; Rose Packman,
Young Women's Study Club. .
Howard Lieberman, executive
secretary, Bnai Brith • Youth Or-
ganization in Detroit and vicinity,
successor to Leonard Belove, will
be welcomed to his new post' at
an A. Z. A. party on Monday,
March 18, at 8 p. , rn-. The pro-
gram will include a skit, choral
group singing and dancing.

Expanding Activities;
Dance Classes Added

Activities

The intermediates of the Jew-
ish Center are expanding their
program.
Beginning with March 11, the
Intermediate Lounge will be
open every evening, Monday
through Thursday, 8 to 10 p. m.
The .Sunday afternoon Jive
Junction program will continue
3 to 5:30 p. m. in the lounge. Miss
Gladys Bernstein, Miss Gladys
Garvin, Miss Ruth Lefkowitz,.
Moe Kesner and the intermediate
lounge committee supervise these
activities.
Special programs are being
organized for alternate Thursday
evenings. An intermediate splash
party, followed by dancing in the
lounge, will be featured every
Tuesday evening.
Young people are invited to
join in the ballroom dancing
class. All types of ballroom danc-
ing will be taught, from Tin Pan
Alley Jitterbug to South Ameri-
can Rhumba, Tango and Samba.
The class will meet every Mon-
day at 8 p. m. in the Butzel
Hall, starting March 11. Dance
instructor will be Miss Harriet
Warrat, formerly a teacher
at the Arthur Murray School.
There will be a fee of $1 for the
10 week course.
This class is being sponsored
by the Fred Kisch chapter of
AZA and the Center Inter-
mediates. AZA members, • Bnai
Brith girls and Center • Inter-
mediates are eligible. Interested
young people may register with
David Goose of AZA, Sam
Neuschatz or at the Center office.

Swim Classes Start
For Juniors at Center

Modern Dance Symposium
To• Feature Four Groups
•
A modern dance symposium
will be held in the Jewish Center
auditorium on Thursday, April
4, by dance groups representing
Wayne University, Lucy Thur-
man Y. W. C. A., the studio of
Tosia Mundstock and the Center's
dance group. The public is in-
vited. A large attendance is
anticipated from the city high
schools and the health education
department of Wayne University.

Dexter Council Center
To Form Two New Groups
The Dexter Council Center is
considering the formation of an
additional Bnai Brith Girls
Chapter and a Junior Club.
At its last meeting in the D.
W. Simons School, the council
heard Mr. Jaslove, Denby High
School teacher, speak on "Jewish
and Other Minority Groups".
The film, "The World We Want
to Live In", was shown.

Mrs. Adler Lists Topics
For 3 Center Lectures
Mrs. Morris Adler will give
the fourth talk in her series of
lectures on "The Making of the
Modern Jew" at 8 p. m. Wed-
nesday, at the Center. Her topic
will be. "Home Life."
On March 20, Mrs. Adler will
discuss "Festivals and Cere-
monials". She will conclude the
series on March .27 with a lec-
ture on "Eternity".
Musical interludes are held
during the meetings. There is no
admission. everyone is invited.

Mothers' Clubs
Purim festivals are the order
of the day for the Mothers'
clubs during the month of March.
Several clubs are discussing
whether or not the U. S. should
grant the British loan.
Young Women's Study Club, at
its meeting next Tuesday at 1:30
p. m., at the Center, will give a
party honoring Miss Zelda Ros-
enthal who has conducted Bible
lessons for the group.- These
classes were given in memory of
the late Bertha Henclin.
Woodward Study Club will ,
give a 'Pbririi 'Party Wednesday
afternoon at the Jewish Center.
Miss Drora Selesny will be heard
in holiday songs.
"Today's Dreams—Tomorrow's
World" is the. theme .chosen for
the annual masquerade ball, to
be sponsored March 20 ' at the

A special class for non-swim-
mers has been organized from
the junior ranks at the Jewish
Center with the intention• of
teaching as many as pc ssible how
to swim before the summer sea-
son arrives. Lessons are given
twice. a week and classes are
limited to 10 boys: As soon as a
boy learns to swim the length
of the pool, a new registrant will
be admitted to the .class.-
The Center staff is making up
lists for future classes Which will
meet at 5 p. m. every Monday

Tuesday Musicale piano contest,
the Hamilton School Chorus, and
Wayne University Dance Work-
shop also will appear. Other
participants will be Arthur Bena-
vie, Lawrence La Gore, Mary
Marshall, Marion McCloud, Henry
McCreary, Patricia Moody, Jean
Neuschwanger, Violet Toth and
Beatrice Ulrich.
The Detroit PubliC Library,
Wayne University, the Jewish
Center and -the University of
Michigan Extension Service are
the sponsors for this concert,
which is directed by Mary Car-
rick, and is the opening event of
the Detroit Youth Festival, de-
signed to display the creative
work of young. people- of all na-
tions in music and the arts.
The Detroit .Symphony Orches-
tra will perform "Manhattan Noc-
turne," by Phillipa • Duke .Schuy-
ler, which won first prize of $100,
on March 13, at the final concert
of the school concert series, which
is dedicated to the Youth Festi-
