Purim Is Observed
In Hebrew Schools

Temple Israel Pupils
Plan 4 Purim Fetes
Beginning March 15

Temple Israel and Temple
Israel Religious School are pre-
paring to celebrate "Victory
Purim.?' Members of the congre-
gation will bring their children
to the Purim Sabbath Eve serv-
ice, Friday night, March 15, at
8:30, in the Lecture Hall of the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
A choir composed of the chil-
dren of the sixth grade of the
Religious School, conducted by
Cantor Robert S. Tulman, will
render Purim melodies. The solo-
ist will be Marcia Sue Eisenberg.
Rabbi Leon Fram will preach
on the subject "Shusan and
Nuremberg." The Sisterhood will
serve refreshments at the social
hour after the service.
On Purim Day, Sunday, March
17, , 9:30 a. m., pupils of the
fourth and fifth grades will hold
their Purim masquerade. A play
entitled "Shusan Time," directed
by Rosemary Emmer, will • be
presented. The cast includes
Devera • Modell, Beth Rothen-
berg, Emily Schultz, Roslyn
Brose, Stewart Pernick, Norman
Folbe, Jack Bagdade and Larry
Charfoos.
On Sunday, March 24, the
kindergarten and primary grade
children will hold their Purim
masquerade. The Confirmation
department will hold parties and
see the performance of a Purim
play on Saturday . morning,
March 16. The play, "Merry
Purim," is directed by Bette
Weinberg. The cast includes Sam
Freshman, Bobby Becker, Johnny
Sheppard, Sanford Laikin, Han-
ley Gurwin, Marvin Sternberg.
Judy Segal, Aviva Freedman,
Linda Fuller, Betsy Brown,
Carol Tanner and Leila Shapiro.

Purim will be celebrated in all
branches of the United Hebrew
Schools with Purim playlets in
Hebrew and in English, singing,
parties, games, etc. -
Much time is being devoted to
the study of Purim, to the his-
tory of the holiday, to the man-
ner in which it was celebrated
at different times in different
countries. Particular stress is
laid on the manner in which
it has been celebrated of late in
Palestine, and especially in Tel
Aviv.

Yeshivah University
Seeking Funds Here

Rabbi Abraham Bender Con-
ducts Annual Solicitation

Rabbi Abraham Bender of New
York arrived here last week to
direct his annual solicitations for
Yeshivah College of New York,
and the Isaac Elchanan Theologi-
cal School.
During his visit here he may
be seen by his many friends and
y contributors to the Yeshivah
at 9313 N. Martindale.
Yeshivah College recently was
recognized as a University and
was given the right to issue high-
er degrees_ and doctorates. It is
the only Jewish university in this
country.
The Yeshivah, one of the out-
standing educational institutions
in America, accommodates ap-
proximately 1,000 students com-
ing from 25 states and 15 Euro-
pean countries: Some come also
from such far places as Palestine,
India, Iraq, .South. Africa, Vene-
zuela, Peru and Canada. These

NEW YORK (Religious News
Service)—An insufficient number
of rabbis and teachers and lack
cf financial support from Jews is
causing the decline of Judaism,
it was charged by Dr. Louis Fin-
kelstein, president of the :Jewish
Theological SeminarY Of Arneri-
ca at a conference of 100- conserv-
ative rabbis at the seminary. He
said the. Jewish- religion may
"cease to have any significance"
in another generation or two.
The conversion of Jews to
other faiths, particularly in the
case of "boys who have been
overseas," is an 'outgrowth of the
rabbi and teacher shortage, he
declared.
A five year, $15,000,000 pro-
gram for the "spiritual rehabili-
tation of Jews" was announced

N'West Congregation
Children to Give Play;
Plan Purim Services

On Sunday morning, March 17,
in celebration of Purim, the re-
ligious school of the Northwestern
Hebrew Congregation will pre-
sent a play written and directed
by Mrs. Joseph M. Markel. The
cast of religious school children
is under .the directorship of Abra-
ham Warsen.
Ira G. Kaufman, president of
the congregation, states that plans
will be made for Purim and
Passover services at the board of
directors meeting on Monday.
The second annual donor dinner
will be held in June.
The Junior Congregation con-
ducted services at the Bagley
School under the leadership of
Max H. Goldsmith.
This Saturday, the synagogue
will inaugurate a children's story
hour between 10 and 11 a. m.
The community is invited to at-
tend Sabbath services of the
synagogue at the Bagley School,
Curtis and- Roselawn.
At Sabbath services on- March
2, Ronald Louis Decker, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Decker,
celebrated his Bar-Mitzvah.
The services were occasion for
the announcement of the forth-
coming marriage of Miss Anne
Burg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Solomon Burg, to Seymour
Wedes of Brooklyn.
