Merchants, Educators to Participate in Campaign

Osnos Named Chairman
Of Mercantile Division

Pharmacists, Furniture Men, Apparel Stores,
Grocers and Others Mobilized

Meeting to consider recom-
mendations of its executive com-
mittee, the Educational Service
Group completed its organiza-
tional planning for its part in
the $2,000,000 allied Jewish cam-
paign last Sunday, at the Cen-
ter. The group, headed by Prof.
Lawrence H. Seltzer of Wayne
University, is preparing for a
citywide meeting of all educa-
tional workers and in anticipa-
tion therefore lists of non-teach-
ing as well as teaching employes
of the local school systems and
institutions of higher learning
are being compiled.
A suggested constition will
be presented to the entire group
and election of permanent of-
ficers and executive committee
will be held. The program com-
mittee consists of David D. Apt-
ekar, Henry Faigan, Samuel C.
_Milan and Matilda Rosenberg.
The provisional planning com-
mittee which has thus far car-
ried on the organizational work
includes: Charles Rosenblatt,
Samuel C. Milan, Jacob B. Ro-
gvoy, Huldah Fine, Philip L.
Rosenthal, Victor Bloomfield,
Bertha M. Robinson, Samuel Bis-
hop, Spenser S. Fishbaine, Ma-
tilda Rosenberg, Mrs. George
Blumenstock, Mrs. Reuben Le-
vine, Henry Faigan, Berna4c1
Jaffe, Louis Panush, Norman
Drachler, Esther Charness, David

Answering the call by Henry
Winernan, key people in the Mer-
cantile trade have begun the or-
ganization of groups which will
participate in the drive. Max Os-
nos was elected provisional chair-
man and Maurice A. Enggass,
chairman of the board of the De-
troit Service Group, is acting as
counselor for the Mercantile Di-
vision.
Present at the meeting were:

Bienenstock, Irving W. Blum-
berg, S. E. Ellis, Maurice A. Eng-
gass, Miles Finsterwald, Ben
Gould, Morris Jacobs, Hershel V.

Steps will be taken to proceed
with the organization of the sec-
tions in the Mercantile Division:
Dry Goods, Shoes, Furniture,
Luggage and Loans, Men's Ap-
parel, Women's Apparel, Depart-
ment Stores. Each of the trade
groups formulated plans for fu-
ture meetings in their respective
trades.
MEN'S APPAREL GROUP
Representing the Men's Apparel
group at a meeting arranged by
Nathan Scholnick and Max Os-

A provisional executive com-
mittee was elected consisting 'of

FURNITURE GROUP PLANS
Charles .Finn, Victor Finn, Her-
man Mathias, Morton J. Newlan-
der, Benjamin M. Smith • and
Louis Tabashnik met at the Fur-
niture Club recently to organize
participation in the campaign. A
meeting is scheduled for the lat-
ter part of this month at which
time election of a chairman and
an executive board will take

place.

DRY GOODS GROUP
Answering the call of Julian
H. Krolik, the Dry Goods group
elected Morris Shatzen as provi-
sional chairman and Morris M.
Jacobs, co-chairman. A steering
committee consisting of the fol-
lowing was appointed to compile
a list of persons engaged in this
trade:
Morris Jacobs, Ira Brawer,
Morris Baker, Harry Hecker,
Maurice Landau, Benjamin Lie-
berman, Samuel Platt, Morris
Shatzen, Samuel Schwartz, Si-
mon - Weisman and Harry Zol-
kower.
Mr. Krolik explained the func-
tions of the United Jewish Ap-
peal and of the acceptance of the
$2,000,000 quota by the Jewish
community of Detroit. Plans were
made to call a city-wide meeting
of this group. The following also
attended the meeting: Morris

geleisen, Irving Gould, Morris M.
Jacobs, Selden Koblin, Benjamin
D. Lieberman, Samuel W. Platt,

Pharmaiist Group
Elects Its Officers
The election of permanent of-
ficers on Feb. 27 marked the of-
ficial establishment of the Phar-
macist Service Group, a profes-
sional section of the Detroit Ser-
vice Group of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation of Detroit.
Samuel M. Bez, temporary
chairman of the provisional plan-
ning committee, was elected
president by acclamation. The
vice-president of the group is
Bernard Snider and the execu-
tive committee includes the fol-
lowing pharmacists: Max Appel.
Benjamin M. Bavly, Irving Gold-
man, Ben Gurvitz, Morris Kar-,
bal, David Karp, Belle H. Mos-
kowitz, Edward Rothenberg and
Morris Sussman.
The first city-wide meeting
held at the Center, was attended
by a large audience of pharmac-
ists and their wives. Val Clare,
news editor of Station CKLW,
presented a dramatic picture of
his experiences at the battlefronts
of Europe and described the
great need for assistance to the
remaining peoples of the war-
torn countries.
Isidore Sobeloff, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Welfare
Federation of Detroit, explained
the purposes of the forthcoming
Allied Jewish Campaign for the
United Jewish Appeal and point-
ed out the need for 100 percent
participation by all members of
the Jewish community. The stir-
ring motion picture short "Hitler
Lives?" was also included in the
program.

Of Tobacco Section
The provisional committee of
the Tobacco . and Confectionery
Section h a s chosen Norman
Schwartz as organizing chairman,
with Harry Ernstein as co-chair-
man. The committee is preparing
for a thorough job of organiza-
tion, campaign solicitation, and
year-round service.
United Grocers Pledge
Leadership in Campaign
Members of the United Gro-
cers Association, which consists
of 29 grocers in the Twelfth
Street, Linwood, and Dexter
neighborhoods, have voted to ac-
cept responsibility for organiza-
tion of the Retail Markets Sec-
tion. Abe Cherow, president of
the UGA, has appointed Louis
Bynder, Sam Bynder, Sol , Gran-
adier, Jack Leider, Edward
Lempko, • Meyer Mattis, David
Weiss, manager of the Associa-
tion, who, in addition to himself
will serve as members of a steer-
ing committee to plan the UGA's
role in the campaign.
Super-Markets Group Formed
Representatives of super-mar-
kets have completed formation of
their own section. Tom Borman,
Morris Cooper and Bernard
Gourwitz are chairmen. Members
are offering 'their services to all
sections of the Food Division.
Filling Station Group
Picks Steering Committee
Led by Bill Gershenson a Fill-
ing Station Group Steering Com-
mittee consisting of Burton Lem-
berg, Jerome Bi'elfield, Sam
Gershenson, Benjamin Green,
and Henry Carnick has complet-
ed organizational plans for the
month of March. The group is
now c.mpiling lists and getting
set for a large rally shortly.

a Purim program on Saturday,
March 16, at 9 p. m., in the audi-
torium of the Rose Sittig Cohen
Building.
A program has, been prepared
by the chairman of the evening.
Michael Michlin, to include brief
Purim talks, community singing
of Purim songs led by Abraham
Schachter and solos.
Refreshments, characteristic of
the Purim festival, will be serv-
ed by the Ladies' Auxiliary head-
ed by Mrs. Abraham Panush.
