PALESTINE

The Palestine Government, in an official
communique, justified the shooting by guards
in an Eritrean detainee camp, of 17 Palestinian
Jewish inmates, resulting in the death of two
and the wounding of 15. The shooting, on Jan.
1'7, has aroused the anger of Jewish Palestine.
A public investigation of the incident and the
immediate repatriation of all Jewish deportees
have been demanded of High Commissioner
Cunningham.
The Arab League's boycott, now in its
second month, has failed to injure Jewish
Palestine's export trade, and the prospects of
new markets all over the world for Palestine
goods are increasing daily. E. Roth, manager
of the Foreign Trade Institute, reported in
Tel Aviv. Mr. Roth said Jewish Palestine's
export figures for January, the first month of
the Arab boycott, compared favorably with the
export figures for January 1945.
The immediate repatriation of all Palestin-
ian Jews deported to detention camps abroad
and a public inquiry into the recent deaths of
two Jewish detainees and the wounding of
12 others in a shooting fray at an Eritrean de-
tention camp, was demanded of High Commis-
sioner Cunningham by a delegation represent-
ing Jewish Palestine institutions. The High
Commissioner promised the delegation an
early consideration of both requests.
Three hundred and eighty Jewish immi-
grants from Bulgaria and two from Romania
arrived in Haifa aboard the Romanian motor
ship Transilvania. They include 180 Chalutzim
(pioneers), 28 children for the Youth Aliyah
and 39 children traveling with their parents.

OVERSEAS

The Arab States, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, ob-
jected strenuously to the New York City area
as either a temporary or permanent home for
the United Nations Organization, because, they
contended, UNO would be under constant pres-
sure from "political groups" in New York City.
Placards calling on the Germans to remain
loyal to Nazi principles, to hate Jews and Com-
munists until the day when the Swastika flag
is again hoisted throughout Germany were dis-
played duiing the recent elections in towns
throughout the U. S. occupied zone of Germany.
The trial of six alleged Romanian Jewish
quislings who were members of the Jewish
Committee during the pro-Nazi Antonescu re-
gime was opened in Bucharest. The chief de-
fendants are Grosman and Gimbloot who are
accused of having registered Romanian Jews
for deportation to Transnistria and to have fur-
nished a list of Jewish properties to the Ro-
manian Commisar for Jewish Affairs.

that non-Jews who joined the
fold need not subject themselves
to the minutiae of the Abrahamic
covenant. Jews however," he
held, continued to be bound by
them even after accepting the
Christian appendage to Judaism.
Traditional View
It is plain that this is quite
different from the traditional
view. It does not, of course, re-
move the dichotomy between
Judaism and Christianity, but it
does seem to be an interpretation
more likely to promote accord
between Christian and Jew.
Abram Lipsky is no novice in
theological writing. He is the
author of works on Luther and
Wesley. His twenty years of re-
search on the theme of Paul
cannot be easily brushed aside.
The point of all this is: before
you argue, be sure you have the
right translation. There is the
story of the Yiddish-speaking
Jew who was brought before a
judge, charged with stealing oats.
The Jew could speak no
English. Said the judge to the
interpreter, who was a clumsy
translator: "Ask him if he stole
the oats."
"Host du geganvet dem hober?"
asked the interpreter.
"Ich hab geganvet dem hober?"
exclaimed the Jew indignantly.
"He stole the oats, Judge, he
says," said the interpreter.
"Ask him," said the judge,
"what did he need the oats for."
"Oif wos hot ihr bedarft dem
hober?" asked the interpreter.
"Oif Kappores!" replied the
Jew.
"Judge," said the intepreter,
"he says he needed the oats for
chickens."
