Thoughts That Came
To Me in the Night
I cry: "A guerdon during life
Tho slim the merit, fierce the strife!
Grant me laurels while I breathe,
Sanctify me not beneath
Smouldering gravestones, dark decay:
Eulogies but for a day!
Monuments will never tell
How you made my life a hell;
Bruised me sore and beat me faint,
And when I died you called me saint.
During life you sneered and snubbed;
When I died you had me daubed
A paragon from virtue's fount,
Buried me in holy ground;
Bared your head and shed a tear;
In your heart there lurked a leer,
A smirking leer, well satisfied:
'Now at last that duffer died.' "
