Answers to Readers ° Questions About Jews Trifling With Jewry's Hopes . * Welfare Fact-Finding Although the proposal for the introduc- tion of a system of national advisory budget- ing was defeated overwhelmingly at the as- sembly of the Council of Jewish Federa- tions and Welfare Funds in Detroit, the assembly delegates unanimously adopted a resolution for the expansion of its fact- finding service "so that a maximum of available information on agency programs, financial expense and agency needs be pro- vided to local communities." This resolution recommended that the Federations' Council should provide audited reports on all national and overseas agencies to local communities and that it should report on areas of overlapping service. Delegates at the assembly sessions were unanimous in asking for the expansion of the fact-finding services and pointed to the great need for more information on fund- raising. . The adopted resolution should serve to facilitate the efforts of many com- munities in eliminating overlapping of ser- vices and in reducing to a minimum the costs of fund-raising agencies.. Prophetical portion—I Kings 18:1 (or 20)-39. Candle-lighting time this Friday is at 5:35 p. m. * * In Warsaw, the committee's members had occasion to learn from Dr. Emil Sommerstein, chairman of the Central Polish Jewish Committee, that most of the Jews in Poland desire to emigrate because they feel that they are "alone" rather than for economic reasons. In Munich, where another group representing the Anglo- American Committee interviewed Jewish' survivors, Bart- ley Crum, one of the American members, stated that he will recommend that all Jewish refugees be evacuated immedi- ately from the displaced persons' camps because of his feeling that no matter what improvements are made in these camps the survivors, if they are not settled in permanent homes, "will be ruined spiritually and psychologically." It is important to note that Harry Lerner of Omaha, UNRRA director of the DP camp in Stuttgart, informed the committee that it is impossible to plan for the survivors along lines other than Zionistic because the DPs think only in terms of settling in Palestine, of discussing Palestinian problems, or of singing Palestinian songs. * * * Nevertheless there are frequent indications that the in- quiry committee veers away from the original purpose for which it was set up; that it is prepared to discuss anything and everything under the sun, from theology to parlor politics, instead of sticking to the subject of Jewry's need for Palestine as a home for hundreds of thousands of European survivors. It was good of Cardinal Faulhaber, Archbishop of Munich, to condemn anti-Semitism, to give assurances . that he plans to ask Pope Pius to issue a pastoral message for European Catholics urging them to fight anti-Semitism, and to inform the inquiry committee that "anti-Semitish is a curse against humanity" and that "a Germany without Jews is unthinkable." But this is an issue affecting ALL humanity. It does not refer primarily to the immediate issue at hand relative to Jewish homelessness. Furthermore, his views are contrary to the desires of German Jews, who insist upon being moved out of the land that has become a graveyard for their rela- tives and friends. * * * Thus far, the committee's activities serve to arouse suspicions and doubts. Perhaps a personal experience in Palestine will change the picture, in spite of the ugly sight of barbed-wire entanglements set up by the British. Per- haps the committee will learn that the prejudices engendered by British politicians are in themselves hard-hearted barbed wires aimed at injuring the hopes of millions of Jews. Perhaps the committee will learn that the aspirations of an entire people cannot be trifled with and that a de- termined Jewry will not swerve from its path of assuring a permanent home for the Jewish survivors in their people's cradle land. - For power and position Had chosen the Jews as his prey. But the Truth was revealed—. (As the Truth always will . . .) Haman's doom was sealed, And the Jews—are here. still! 'Tis visible truth of Divine manifestation. In the destiny of the Eternal Jew Who, though full of years, ever new Marches beside Time and in Space. Pesach, Hanukah, Purim are signs . That Israel's persecution is not of God's designs. And yet, from Phargjah down the line, Men have been ignoring the Divine sign. I believe you will also enjoy reading this Tal- mudic legend on "The Power of the Tongue," even if you may already have heard it: "Go to the market place and bring to me something good," said Rabbi Gamaliel to his servant. "Yes, Master," he replied and went to the market place, returning with a tongue. On another occasion, to test out his servant, the Rabbi said: _ "Go to the market-place and bring me something bad." "Yes, Master," the servant replied, and again he went to the market place and again he returned with a tongue. "Why," asked the Rabbi,. "did you bring a tongue on both occasions?" "A tOngue, my Master," replied the servant, "may be the source of either good or evil. If it is good, there is nothing better. If it is bad, there is - nothing worse". This is excellent advice and all of us should be guided by it. A pleasant Sabbath to all. Distress binds us together, and, thus united, we suddenly discover our strength. Yes, we are strong enough to form a State, and, indeed a model State. We possess all human and material resources necessary for the purpose,
