Bi-National State in Palestine
Favored by Einstein, I. F. Stone
"I am convinced that the Jew-
ish-Arab difficulties can be solved
if we are able to obtain a gov-
ernment in Palestine under di-
rect control of the UNO organ-
ization and under a constitution
which assures both the Jewish
and Arab people security against
being out-voted by the other
party," declared Albert Einstein
in a letter to the newly formed
Progressive Palestine Associa-
tion, with offices at 809 Eye St.,
KW., Washington, D. C.
- Addressed to the first public
meeting of the Washington
branch of the Progressive Pal-
estine Association, Einstein's let-
ter stated: "I agree wholeheart-
edly with your program and I
am convinced that your work
will be of real value for the
solution of the hard problems
the Palestine situation is present-
ing."
The Progressive Palestine As-
sociation intends to fight for the
opening of Palestine to free Jew-
ish immigration and to support
a program of Arab-Jewish co-
operation in Palestine, the chair-
man, Adrian B. Schwartz, an-
nounces.
'I. F. Stone, of the Washington
staff of PM and the Nation, ex-
pressed the conviction that a bi-
national state for Palestine in a
Near East Federation will best
meet Jewish and world needs.
Stone attributed British opposi-
tion to Jewish freedom to the
"obsession" of Ernest BeVin and
the British government with the
idea of appeasing the Arab rulers
in preparation for a war with the
Soviet Union.
William Stringer who has cov-
ered the Near East for the
Christian Science Monitor, as-
Jewish Committee
Leaders in London
For World Parley
serted: "The fundamental need
in Palestine is the cultivation, at
high levels, of Arab-Jewish co-
operation as it already exists at
the village level." He suggested
a program including unrestricted
Jewish immigration and econ-
omic rehabilitation of the entire
Near East.

Organization- as trustee for Pal-
estine and dedicated to the ex-
pansion of economic opportunity,
is being proposed by the Pro-
gressive Palestine Association,
Mr. Schwartz said. He explain-
ed that the' group differs from
the position of the majority of
Zionists in that it does not sup-
port their demand for a Jewish
Commonwealth in Palestine. "No'
lasting solution which will meet
Jewish needs—or for that mat-
ter Arab needs—is possible until
a new social climate has been
created there," he said.
