Rabbi Adler Talks at Luncheon
Of Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood
Sisterhood of the Cong. Shaarey
Zedek will launch its Torah
Scholarship Fund drive at a
luncheon next Wednesday at
12:30 o'clock, at the Shaarey
Zedek.
Mrs. Carl Schiller and Mrs.
Seymour Simons are co-chair-
men.
Chaplain Morris Adler, who
just returned from Tokyo, will be
the principal speaker. A musical
program has been arranged by
Mrs. S. S. Wittenberg.
In endowing the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary with a Torah
Scholarship Fund, the Sisterhood
makes it possible for a student
to receive annually an award
named in honor of Rabbis A. M.
Hershman and Morris Adler.
The Sisterhood has assumed a
quota of $21,500.
Admission is a contribution to
the fund. The minimum is $12.22
(two Torah Units). Special gifts
start at $25. Reservations can be
made through Mrs. Meyer
Shugarman, TO. 8-8754, or Mrs.
Louis Tobin, TO. 8-3254.
Support of Beth Yehudah Urged
by Leaders as Torah Month Begins
Members for the Board of
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah will
meet Monday evening, under the
chairmanship of Rabbi M. J.
Wohlgelernter, president, to re-
_ view activities of Torah Month,
and to hear reports of workers
in the current drive for deficit
financing of the institution's WU-
get.
• The fund raising effort will
conclude with the annual pa-
trons' dinner Sunday evening,
March 3, at the Shaarey Zedek
Reservations will be received at
the Yeshivah office, HO. 5605.
Rabbi Wohlgelernter's Message
"The Yeshivah has enriched
the spiritual life of the Detroit
Kehilah," Rabbi M. J. Wohlern-
ter, president of Beth Yehudah,
has declared in a statement inaug-
urating Torah Month observance,
"by its new approach to the
- problem of local Jewish educa-
tion, its progressive method and
maximum program; and the ex-
cellent teaching staff it has
brought to our city. Many of
Beth Yehuda's alumni are now
occupying positions of lay and
religious leadership in Detroit
and in other American Jewish
communities. About fifty of its
recent graduates are at present
enrolled in higher schools of
Jewish learning.
"As we dedicate our resources
toward the physical rescue of
the survivors of European Jew-
ry, let us not lose sight of the
crying need for the spiritual sav-
ing of future Jewish generation
in America by providing gener-
ously for the proper religious
training of our own youth."

Christians Invited
To Temple Israel's
Brotherhood Rites
Members of Temple Israel are
inviting Christian friends and
neighbors to attend the annual
Brotherhood Sabbath Eve service
in the Lecture Hall of the Detroit
Institute of Arts on Friday night,
•Feb. 15, at 8:30.
Rabbi Leon Fram has chosen
as the subject the recently pub-
lished book on Christian-Jewish
relationships—"One Destiny," by
Sholem Asch.
The Boy Scout troop sponsored
by the Men's Club will partici-
pate in this service. Cantor Rob-
ert S. Tulman and organist Karl
W. Haas have prepared a special
program of traditional Jewish mu-
sic, and will lead the congrega-
tion in the singing of brotherhood
hymns.
In further observance of Broth-
erhood Week, the Rev. Tracy
Pullman of the Unitarian-Univer-
sal ist "Church of Our Father"
will exchange pulpits with Rabbi
Fram. The Rev. Pullman will
preach at Temple Israel on Feb.
22, and Rabbi Fram will occupy
the pulpit of the Church of Our
Father on Feb. 24.
the institution, has issued a
statement in conjunction with
the fifth annual observance of
Torah Month. Mr. Mohr, presi-
dent of Detroit Chapter, Ameri-
can Federation of Polish Jews,
former president of Congregation
Beth Abraham and local vice-
president of the American Jew-
ish Congress, stated in part:
"Yeshivath Beth Yehudah is a
communal institution, in the full
sense of the word. Its affairs are
managed by a board of directors
which includes all rabbis and the
most prominent laymen of nearly
every congregation. Close to 40
per cent of the budget, which
will top $100,000 this year, will
be met from tuition fees.. The
largest part of the remaining 60
per cent must be raised during
the next four weeks. The Yeshi-
vah is heavily burdened by an
accumulated deficit, and we must
exert ourselves to clear it.
Building Jewish Future
"I am certain that Detroit Jew-
ry, which supports generously all
worthy causes locally, nationally
and overseas, will not neglect its
own center for Torah education.
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah makes
its major fund raising appeal to
the general Jewish population of
the city during the days of Torah
Month. Congregations and other
groups should not delay, but im-
mediately take the matter up at
their next meetings and allocate
an adequate sum as a yearly
contribution to the Yeshivah.
"Individual friends of the in-
stitution, parents of pupils, and
citizens of our community gen-
erally, should be happy for the
opportunity to help build for the
Jewish future here, and ultimate-
ly in the Land of Promise,
through the training of our youth
in the sacred traditions of Is-
rael."
