PALESTINE

(See also Page 3)

New settlements for demobilized Jewish
servicemen were established officially on
Keren Kayemeth (Jewish National Fund) land
on the 15th of Shevat, traditional replanting
day observed throughout Jewish Palestine.
Federal Judge Simon H. Rifkind, of New
York, official advisor on Jewish affairs to the
American Commanding General in Europe,
arrived in Jerusalem from Frankfort for a
brief tour of Jewish Palestine. He is scheduled
to meet representatives of Jewish National
institutions.

OVERSEAS

Fourteen-year-laid Berish Goldfier, a sur-
vivor of Oswiecim death camp, was the second
victim in less than two weeks of what is be-
lieved to be a Nazi murder band operating in
the U. S. zone of Germany. The boy was found
stabbed to death in the Regensberg railroad
station, where a week ago another Jewish boy
was found murdered in the same manner. In
both cases the murderers remain uncaptured.
Dr. David Raphael of Liverpool, 30-year-old
former student at the Liverpool Talmudical
College, has been appointed professor of phi-
losophy at the University of Otago, Dunedin,
New Zealand.
An 'exhibition titled "Warsaw Accuses" con-
taining paintings and documentary evidence of
Nazi atrocities and Jewish suffering and hero-
ism before and during the battle of the Warsaw
Ghetto, has opened in Warsaw. The exhibition
will be shown shortly in England, France and
the United States.

Hermann Goering is described as "a polite,
charming and decent man, not at all disinclined
to discuss religious matters," by the American
chaplain in charge of all the Protestant war
criminals here, according to Dr. Max Schnet-
zer writing in the Swiss weekly, Sie Und Er.
The article does not give the chaplain's name
because he is "suspicious" of interviews.
Reports circulated in London allege that
UNRRA officials in the U. S. and British zones
of Germany are vainly attempting to propa-
gandize Jewish DPs into renouncing their de-
sire to emigrate to Palestine, before they are
questioned by members of the Anglo-American
Committee of Inquiry on Palestine who will
arrive in Europe before the end of the month.
"Anti-Semitism is Fascism," was the slogan
of a mass demonstration in Hyde Park, Lon-
don, which demanded the banning of fascism
in England. A resolution urging a ban was
transmitted to the Government. The demon-
strants marched past the Westminister District
where UNO meets.
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the Jew-
ish Agency for Palestine and the World Zionist
Organization, arrived in London from the
United States accompanied by Mrs. Weizmann
and his secretary, Linton.
A memorial meeting for the late Eleanor
Rathbone, Independent MP and a staunch
friend of Zionism, was held in London in the
offices of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
Professor Selig Brodetsky, chairman of the
Board of Deputies of British Jews, presided
and announced a project for naming a school
for Jewish children, "Magdiel" in Miss Rath-
bone's honor.

`A Synogogue for Manila'

Morton Netzorgs, Former
Detroiters, Head Memorial

Liberated at Santo Tomas, Lead Committee in
Plans to Restore House of Worship

Santo Tomas for three years, and
were liberated when U. S. troops
stormed the university which had
been made into a prison.
Donations Pour In
Through the medium of the
chaplains in the Pacific theater,
news of th proposed restoration
of Temple Emil spread. Dona-
tions poured into Manila from
servicemen and women in the
Philippines, Dutch New Guinea,
Korea and Japan. Catholic and
Protestant chaplains stressed the
fact that the new synagogue
would be a memorial to those of
all faiths who consecrated the
Peace with their lives.
Impressive ceremonies mark-
ing completion of the military
portion of the campaign were
held on Dec. 21, 1945. Lt.-
Gen. Styer, commanding the
armed forces in the Western Pa-
cific, presented a $20,000 check,
the total of the military person-
nel contribution, to Mr. Netzorg.
Two daughters and a son of the
Netzorgs are now living in De-
troit.

Two thousand Jewish souls con-
gregated in a ruins in a shell-
shattered city. This was no new
scene to a bomb torn war wearied
world. Jews were gathering for
refuge amidst rock strewn debris
in almost every major city where
war's destroying whirlpool en-
snared humanity.
These Jews, however, were dif-
ferent. They were inaugurating
a refuge—a house of worship—to
be raised from its own dust—the
wreckage of " Manila's Temple
Emil.
Chaplain Colman A. Zwitman,
energetic, vibrant rabbi of Mia-
mi's Temple Israel, compared the
fictional, "A Bell for Adano" with
this factual "Synagogue for Ma-
nila."

In Manila 35 Years
The Netzorgs, JDC and JWB
representatives, had arrived in
Manila 35 years before as newly-
weds and teachers from their na-
tive Detroit. They raised their
family here and when the chil-
dren were ready for college they
were sent to the States.
Early in 1941 they were visited
by their son, Davi d, 27,
and a Ph.D., who was teaching at
the University of Nebraska. When
the war broke David enlisted in
the U. S. Arfmy Engineers and
was assigned to Bataan, where
he was captured. Seven days
after he had made the "Death
March" he died in the Capas pris-
on camp.
The Netzorgs were interned at

A tribute to the heroic actions and
victories of Jack Malin in the Pacific.
In those far flung areas, alert on every
scene
Sprang from his lair, Our Brave "Jack,
the Marine."
Amid hardships, cruelty and opposition
strong
Quick to our defense, it did not take
him long
To take up arms, to get the "Japs'
spleen"
If it was anywhere close, to "Our Jack,
the Marine."
In Detroit, he left loved ones waiting
for him
But was faithful to duty, and the bat-
tle grim
Jack invested his love In a Hollywood
Queen
"Bee" his wife, who inspired her
"Jack, the Marine."
All loved ones now rejoice at his safe
return,
Fond parents, brothers, sister who had
to yearn
To hear of the brave acts of every
scene
That included to Victory, "Their Jack,
the Marine."

Government Enforcing Rule
Barring Sale of Arab Land
to New Settlers

JERUSALEM (Palcor) — Jew-
ish youths from at least five
countries, including the Balkans,
France, Germany and Palestine
itself settled on the soil adding
three new settlements to those
founded on Jewish National
Fund land. The founding of the
new colonies took place sym-
bolically on the day that is ob-
served throughout Palestine as
Hamishah Asar b Shivat.
Kvutza Emunim, affiliated
with Hapoel Hamizrachi, has
been settled on an area of 3,000
dunams in the Beisan Valley,
and is composed of youth emi-
gres from Germany who came to
Palestine in 1935-36 under the
auspices of the Jewish Agency
Youth Aliyah Bureau and who
were joined, in recent years by
youths from the Balkans and
France. The group totals 120
members, whose average age is
25 and 10 of whom are in the
armed ,forces, in addition to 27
children.
The Keren Kayemeth revealed
how rigorously the government
enforces the restrictions against
the purchase of land by Jews in
most of Palestine. In one case
three dunams, or less than one
acre, form a wedge of unculti-
vated Arab land projecting into
Jewish-owned land, yet the gov-
ernment refuses an application
by the seven Arab joint owners
to sell it to the Jews. The gov-
ernment will agree only to ex-
change the land for soil in the
same zone.

Memorial to Dead

On Oct. 20, 1945, the first anni-
versary of D-Day in the Philip-
pines, a group of soldiers and
sailors met at the JWB in Manila
and contrived to aid the plight
of Manila's Jewish community.
The result of this meeting was a
project to rebuild the synagogue
as a memorial to the dead of ALL
FAITHS who fell in the fighting
for the Philippines.
A committee was appointed to
meet with Mr. and Mrs. Morton
Netzorg (formerly of Detroit),
Hymen Levine, Israel Konigs-
berg, Cantor Joseph Cysner and
Rabbi Joseph Schwartz. The lat-
ter two are refugees from former
Nazi occupied lands.
