SUPPOSE IT WERE TRUE?
If you strolled through our military cemeteries all over • the world there
would be no doubt -in your- mind that we paid heavily to win the battles.
Of course, the cemeteries are neat and the white markers are very orderly
and dignified, and many of them even have neatly cut grass. But if you had
watched the soldiers die, some suddenly and - 'some 'painfully, before they
were put to their neat cemeteries, there would be even less doubt the price
we paid.
Our soldiers were told that Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini were vicious
and dangerous characters? Why?. Because they became powerful by appealing
to the baser instincts of their people. They taught them to blame their
troubles on minority groups. They glorified the art of war. They believed in
preaching.hatred and distrust. They encouraged selfishness and greed by
bragging about the empires they - were going to build.
We were told that we were fighting against men who had ideals like
this—I quote from Adolf Hitler's best seller, "Mein Kampf":
"From time to time it is dethonstrated to the German petty bourgeoise
that for the first time here or there a Negro has become a lawyer, teacher,
clergyman, or even a leading• opera tenor or something of that kind. It - is a
sin against the will of the eternal. Creator to let his most talented beings
degenerate while Hottentots and Zulus are trained for intellectual vocations..
The Jew knows very slyly how to construe from this a new proof of the
correctness of his theory of the equality of men which he means to instill
into the nations."
That is the kind of stuff that caused untold suffering and cost untold
lives. It is the kind of things that caused' concentration camps and persecution.
Subsequent evidence reveals that some of Adolf's highest henchmen and
financial supporters who preached the same filth never-believed it but simply
used it to get into power. Remember that they used that power to build the
armies of aggression we had to go overseas to fight.
And now—now that we have returned—we hear of a United States
Senator, a man to whom we swore allegiance and obedience when we took
the soldier's oath, a man who has great influence in constructing the peace
which we went abroad to win—that great Senator wrote a citizen a letter
which read:
"If Jews of your type don't • quit sponsoring and fraternizing with the
Negro race you are going to arouse so much opposition to all of you that
they will get a strong invitation • to - pack up and resettle in Palestine, the
homeland of the Jews, • just as we propose to provide for the voluntary re-
•settlement of the American Negro in West Africa,- their fatherland."
I am a civilian now I am not bound by the soldier oath, which forbids
criticism of members of our Congress. I would like to say that I detect"
Strong similarity in the words of the gentleman of the Senate and the words
of the man we went overseas to fight. The Senator is 'not alone. There are
others like him.
I hope we were told the truth: I, would hate to think that the nice guys
who are under the neat graves, the decent guys who are wearing artificial
limbs, and the good guys who put up with years of danger and hardship did
it all for nothing.
So I prefer to believe that we were told the truth. And I feel that as
long as there are still the Bilbos who depend upon appealing to the beast
in men to get power, the Rankins who preach distrust of the rest of the
world to protect their own selfish interests, and the Gerald L. K. Smiths
whose profession is preaching hate against fellow American citizens because
of their color or creed,. then the war is not won. These men are typical of
those who seek to realize their ambitions under the guise of being 100 per
cent Americans, of being patriots, and of protecting American interests.
Under that guise they seek to suppress truth, and they claim to be against
un-American activities.
I think it is up to us who are lucky enough to be living and able to
think about building the peace to stop and think occasionally of the men
who died so we can make our plans—and to think very often of some of the
things they died for.
I would like to say to Mr. Rankin and Mr. Bilbo and Mr. Smith and the
rest of them that' I am not a Communist. I am a gentile and a Christian. My
-skin is white. I was a soldier and I am an American citizen, and I would be
very curious to see what sort of criticism I am going to get from this.
SuppoSe it were true, as Lt. Gen. Sir.
Frederick Morgan had charged—
That Jews are in a conspiracy to get
out of Europe and to settle in Palestine!
What'• wrong with it? -
Since when has it become a crime for-
people to escape from • horror and from
the :scenes of their Veople's degradatiOns?
Since when has anyone aPologized for
the exodus from Egypt?
If this is to • be another exodus, who
will take it upon himself to state that the
first exodus which 'this were to emulate
was unjustified?
The exodus from Egypt marked the
beginning of the historic movements for
justice. The Mosaic calls to the Israelites
to liberate themselves was the first Mag-
na Charta, the precursor of the Declara-
tion of Independence.
An exodus from Europe might mark
the writing of another great Bible—and
it might mean not the beginning of a
new libertarian movement but the end of
all tyranny.
NO, we are not disturbed by Gen. Mor-
gan. We are much more disturbed by the
actions of those who, like the British au-
thorities, are preventing the exodus. •
In justice to ourselves, we are • rather
in 'favor of the plat he speaks of—the
plot to 'put an end to misery and home-
lessness and to usher in a new era of jus-
tice for the Jewish people.

DETROIT'S "EMMA"
—
Emma Lazaroff-Schaver, Detroit's popu-
lar singer, has been chosen for a high
distinction by being sent to Europe: by
the World Jewish Congress, as part of the
morale-building group of leaders who will
visit the displaced persons' camps.
Mrs. Schaver is eminently well-suited
for this mission. She knows Yiddish well,
is one of the best known singers of Jew-
ish folksongs, had visited in Poland, Ro-
mania and Palestine in the past and un-
derstands the anguish and the needs of
the survivors from Nazism.
Devoted persons like Mrs. Schaver can
do a great deal to raise the morale of the
Jews of Europe. We wish her well 'on her
important mission, and we commend the
World Jewish CongreSs for Selecting her
for this great task.

ZIONIST HEADQUARTERS

THE POLITICAL SCENE
Will the British Government dare to
dissolve the Jewish Agency? . . . This
question 'is on the minds of many Zion-
1St leaders, since the British Government
is legally empowered to liquidate the -
Jewish Agency . . . A study of the Pales-
tine mandate reveals that it was left to
the mandatory power to bring the Agen.7 •
cy into existence 'as soon as it saw fit . . •
The right to abolish is derived from the
power to create . . . - This is the dreadful
weapon in the hands of the. present Brit-
ish cabinet .. . This realization accounts
for the fact that neither the Jewish Agen-
cy, nor its president,' Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann, have resigned in . protest against the
Bevin statement , . Resigning would
have played into the hands of a govern.-
ment that would like nothing better . • .
Some Zionist grouPS would not be, sur- .
prised to see, in the near future, a Brit-
ish attempt to liquidate the present Jew-
ish Agency and to' SUbstitute in its place
what qualified Zionist leaders call a
"Quisling Agency" . . . The belief that
such a puppet Agency is contemplated by
Foreign Secretary Bevin prevails in Zion-•
ist circles, especially among laborites who
are especially embittered, because they
expected, a different approach from the
British Labor Government to the Pales,
tine question . . . They feel doubly be-
trayed by the Labor Cabinet, both as
-Zionists-.and -as laborites.
THE ZIONIST SCENE
