Workers Called
To Jan. 6 Rally

Rabbi Lookstein Goes

On European Tow?

Drive for $125,000 Campaign
to Be Outlined at Brown
Memorial Chapel

ID e t r o i t Palestine Histadrut
(Gewerkshaften Campaign) com-
mittee, headed by Morris L.
Schaver, announces, that plans
are being .completed for the
launching of the $125,000 cam-
paign with a city-wide confer-
ence on Jan. 6, in the Brown
Memorial Chapel, Temple Beth El.
Mr. Schaver states that the
money raised is utilized by the
Histadrut, the General Federa-
tion of Jewish Workers in Pales-
tine, to suppliment the funds con-
tributed by its 150,000 members,
in carrying out its comprehensive
agricultural, industrialization, so-
cial security, health, educational
and cultural program with the
goal of increasing the obsorptive
capacity of Palestine for the
many thousands of Jews who
seek a free home.
The Histadrut members, to-
gether with their dependents,
make up almost 50 per cent of the
Jewish population in Palestine.
Harry S c h u m e r, campaign
treasurer, in analyzing communi-
ty participation in the campaign
'states that all branches of the La-
bor Zionist movement of Detroit,
branches of the Poale Zion party,
'National Workers Alliance, Pio-
neer Womens Clubs, League for
Labor Palestine and Labor Zion-
ist Youth movement all have
participated to make past cam-
paigns a success.
More than 110 organizations
participated under the direction
of J. L. Wolock and M. Taich. So
that these organizations might
again participate in the planning,
opening conference and conduct-
ing of the campaign, a call has
been addressed to them to again
select their representatives.
The conference committee ur-
ges all organizations who have not
selected their representatives to
do so and communicate with
campaign headquarters at 9142
Linwood, TY. 7-8225.

`Jewish Home' Phrase
Abided By Balfour
Pledge, Bevin Claims

LONDON (JPS-Palcor) — The
British Labor Government "has
no intention of avoiding" its ob-
ligations under the Balfour Dec-
laration and the Mandate, For-
eign Secretary Bevin stated in a
letter to S. S. Silverman, Labor-
ite M.P., who wrote him that the-
use of the word "Jewish home,"
instead of "Jewish national
home," in Bevin's Palestine state-
ment "caused anxiety among
Jews."
Bevin replied: "I assure the
phrase 'Jewish home' I used in
the House, Nov. 13, was intended
to be understood as an abbrevia-
tion of the phrase 'national home
for the Jewish people' which ap-
pears in the Balfour Declaration
and in the preamble to the Man-
date on Palestine. The govern-
ment has no intention of avoiding
its obligations under these instru-
ments which, of course, include
facilitating the establishment in
