MR. TRUMAN'S DIRECTIVE
President Truman's directive for the
admission to this country of ,39,,000 hOMe-
less people .a year -increases the duties of
American Jewry in residue efforts.
It means that we shall. ' haVe to raise
even larger fUncla than :thOse contem-,
plated—and even the, $10,000,0,00.,United
Jewish Appeal goal may be inadequate.
Thereaion is obvious: ': the transporta-
tion and Support of the dliPlaced persons
will have to be guaranteed ,by, the UJA
and its supporting Federation.s and Wel-
fare Funds. •
The President's directive calls . for the
elimination of rancor in Jewish ranks. If
we do not unite to save the remnant of
Israel, we shall be responsible for human
lives.
Those who are making a fuss - over
divisive methods in Jewish life and for
whom a debate over "budgeting" is more
important than planning relief efforts
, had better take these points into serious
consideration.

ETERNAL VIGILANCt
The Zionist triumph in Congress proved
the validity of the famous saying that
eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
Had Zionist leaders.,giVeri' up the fight
for even 'a Single moment, the battle
would have been lost.
But their eternal vigilance has brought
results.
Every person who has let , his or her
voice be heard in siiiiptirt Of the Resole;--
tion can count himself or ; herself, .among
the victors. 'Every wire, every poSt card,
every letter, every telephone ,call, has
helped.
If the victory is to be retained, 'Jews
will have to continue the policy of eter-
nal vigilance.
In a sense, the battle for justicce in.
Palestine has only just begun. And it will
be won—if the eternally vigilant, all of
us, stick to:our guns.

IS ICA NEARING ITS END?
The ICA represents an important chap-
ter in Jewish history. Organized in 1890.
by the late Baron Maurice de. Hirsch for:
the settlement of Jews in agricultural-
colonies, ICA founded . palacio and Moise-
vine in the Argentine, and later mobil-,
ized colonists for 20 more settlements.
Baron de Hirsch did not believe in
Zionism, and he turned' down Dr. Theo-
dor Herzl's invitation to participate in
the efforts for Palestine's reconstruction.
But in 1900 some of the ICA funds were
turned_ over to the PICA, the Palestine
JeWish Colonizaion.Association, the fund.
which took over the administration of
Colonies that were subventioned by the
late Baron- Edmond de Rothschild.
ICA finances the Jewish Agridultural
Society of America. It . is a Movement
with an interesting background for ser-
vice, even if its efforts in the Argentine
did not reach the proportions, for which
the founder of the idea had hoped.
ICA's break with HIAS has resulted
from its inability to continue to contribute
funds towards joint immigration efforts..-.
If ICA is declining we may, to our great
regret, see the beginning of the end of
a great movement in Jewish life.

COMEDIANS AND CABARETS
Remember the days when Jews and
Irish fought against banal jokes by com-
edians leveled against their people?
There was a time when vaudeville
houses were invaded by outraged people
who objected to insulting fiin poked at
them. Rotten eggs and tomatoes were
used in the battle waged against those
who were abusing privileged on the
stage, and more recently decency leagues
have , succeeded in eliminating indecen-
cies from the radio and movies.
Now, we are told, some comedians
are again resorting to old tactics in cab-
arets and night clubs.
Last week, Bernard :Isaacs, superin-
tendent of the United Hebrew Schools,
received an interesting letter from a
friend, Mrs. Ann Gold of 1110 Cornell
St., Pittsburgh, Pa. Mrs. Gold, on a
visit to Detroit, was taken to a well
known night club, and her impressians
are contained in the following letter to
Mr. Isaacs:
"The other day, while. on a visit to De-
troit, a friend of mine and I spent an eve-
ning in one of the popular night clubs.
The so-called humor of that club was not
only of low caliber but degrading and hu-
miliating. Such expressions as `yachne,'
`tearing a herring' and the like were re-
peated again and again to the embarrass-
ment of many people present. Add to this
the ugly gestures which punctuated these
'flattering' expressions and you will have
complete picture of what took place there.
"Must Americans be exposed to this
kind of humor which • is besmirching our
people?
"I am writing this to you with the
hope that you bring this matter to the
attention of some df theleaders of the
Jewish community of Detroit.
"I really should have written a more
