Archbishop of Canterbury
Supports Bevin Policy

Halifax Repudiates
Ghetto Slur by
Kramer's Counsel

LONDON, (JTA) — The Arch-
bishop of Canterbury sent ,a let-
ter to his diocese approving For-
eign Minister Bevin's statement
on Palestine and emphasizing
that the Jewish problem cannot
be solved only—nor mainly—in
Palestine. The British pledge to
establish a Jewish National
Home in Palestine is conditioned
on not prejudicing the interests
of the existing 'inhabitants, the
Archbishop pointed out.

Lord Halifax, British ambas-
sador to the U. S. ,in a communi-
cation to the American Jewish
Committee, deplored the language
used by Maj. Thomas C. Wine-
wood, British defense attorney
for Nazi war criminal Joseph
Kramer, at the military trial in
Lueneburg, and stated that the
British Government does not ac-
cept any responsibility for Major
Winewood's statement that "the
concentaration camps contained
undesirable elements from the
dregs of the ghettos of Europe."
The British ambassador's as-
surances to the American Jewish
Committee were made in res-
ponse to a letter , from Jacob
Blaustein, cahirman of the Com-
mittee's executive committee,
calling upon the British Govern-
ment to repudiate Maj. Wine-
wood's comment which he term-
ed "an unfeeling insult to the
martyred dead and to their sur-
viving tormented kin."

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Palestine government has con-
tacted several leading Jews
abroad and asked them to record
statements appealing to the Jews
in Palestine and in their respect-
ive countries to accept the Bevin
statement on Palestine, it was
learned here. The recordings will
be rebroadcast over the Pales-
tine radio.
It was also established that
the British embassy in Cairo en-
couraged the representative of
Transjordan to add his signature
to the decision of the Arab
feague to boycott Jewish-made
goods from Palestine.

LONDON, (Palcor) — One of
the six British members of the
Anglo-American Inquiry Commit-
tee into Palestine and the prob-
lem of Jewish DPs, Richard H.
S. Crossman, Laborite M.P., is
definitely opposed to Zionism
and another Lord (Robert Craig-
nyle) Morrison, is far from sym-
pathetic. The other four, what-
ever their views, if any, are of
no great importance, since they
are not outstanding personalities.
They can compare in no way with
the previous inquiry commissions,
especially with the members of
the Lord Peel Commission.
The Palestine debate in the
House of Lords, although incon-
sequential, was characteristic of
the approach of some leading
British spokesmen to the Jew-
ish and Palestine problem. No
one expected a speech friendly
to the • Jewish' cause from Lord
Altrincham, formerly Sir Grigg,
remembering his record as Brit-
ish Resident Minister in the Mid-
dle • East. But Viscount Cran-
borne's attack on 'Jewish leaders,
and on the Jewish press in Bri-
tain, an attack which bordered
on the malicious, reveals a pain-
fully strange attitude which is
probably attributable to a bad
conscience steaming from the
fact that he was compelled, while
Colonial Secretary, to administer
the White Paper against which
he himself had voted.
Jewish circles were deeply
gratified by Lord Samuel's
speech, despite his proposals to
place Palestine under a trustee-
ship providing, however, racial
autonomy.
The . others, including the Arch-
bishop of York, showed extreme
sensitivity to attacks on Britain,
which they resent as "Jewish in-
gratitude" since Britain has al-
ways shown sympathy for the
Jews.

New York Seditionist Orders
Printing of "Protocols of Zion"
NEW YORK, (JTA);---An order

for 5,000 copies of the "Protocols
of Zion", notorious anti-Semitic
forgery, were placed with 'a New
York printer last month 13.7 Ernest
F. Elmhurst, one of the defend-
ants in the Feredal government's
ill-fated sedition trial, it was re-
vealed by the Mayor's Commit-
tee on Unity. The committee
warned that other hate groups
have resumed their activities in
the New York area, including the
so-called Protestant War Veter-
ans, which is run by • Edward
Jarnes Smythe, another indicted
seditionist.
