Not Christian -- — But Subversive

An Expose of the Christian Front

By the REV. WILLIAM. C. KERNAN

Executive . Director, Institute of American Democracy, Inc.

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Americans will remember an un-Christian and un-American group of
national proportions which operated extensively in this country before Pearl
Harbor. It was called the Christian Front. .
It was organized in platoons. It collected guns. The military experience
of each of, its members was listed. It was anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi. It
gathered its following precisely as Hitler had recruited his—on hatred of the
Jews. It held some 40 meetings every week in New York City alone. Riots
and brawls arising out of these meetings were not uncommon. It was
organized in many cities—including Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh,
minneapolis, St. Louis. and. New York. . ,
This Christian Front—which has nothing to do with Christianity—is
being revived. It held its first meeting in New York City on Oct. 6. Speak-
ers included a man. who is under federal indictment for sedition — a woman
who represents one of the so-called "mothers" groups in America which was
named by the Department of Justice as helping to spread allegedly seditious
propaganda — a former member of the pro-Fascist Silver Shirts who made
headlines about two years ago for proposing at the convention of the America
First Party that all Jews in the United States be either deported or sterilized
— and the organizer of a new veterans' group which bases its program on
anti-Semitism.
Anti-Semitism was the note struck 'at this first meeting of the Christian
Front since Pearl Harbor — as anti-Semitism was the note struck at
Christian Front meetings before Pearl Harbor — and by Hitler before that
when he was using anti-Semitism as the means for gathering his 'following
for the assault on democracy and freedom.
.
The leader of the revived Christian Front "is a man who was active
in it before Pearl Harbor. At' a meeting of the Front in New York City in
1941 — at which he spoke—anti-Semitism reached such dangerous and . ex-
plosive proportions. that he' was taken to Kings County Hospital for a sanity
test! .
It is important for Christians to know these things — important for all
Americans to know them. For there is scarcely a subversive movement of
the Fascist variety 'in this country which does not try to promote its racial
and religious hatred, its terroristic tactics, and its pro-Fascist program by
the pretense of calling itself Christian.
There is nothing Christian about this movement. The sooner. Americans
realize that, the better it will be for Christianity — the safer it will be for
our democratic institutions.

THE INQUIRY COMMISSION

At the moment, it is futile to speculate
on the set-up. of the American members
of the Palestine inquiry commission. All
that is definitelY known is that Dr. James
G. McDonald is an avowed friend of the
Zionist cause and that the others are
"neutrals."
Time will tell the story.
But—how . can the unfortunate people
in Europe wait another 120 days through
the terrible trials of winter months?

CENSORSHIP vs. TENACITY,.

News of British determination to en-
force censorship upon the Jewish press
in Palestine should create a new interest
in the make-up of the pioneers who are
bent upon making Palestine Jewish.
Palestine's Jewish population resembles
more than anything else the pioneering
toughness of the early Americans. They
kriow they are fighting for the right and
censorship will not stop them from let-
ting the truth 'be known and from pass-
ing on the word to the world regarding
their true position. The tenacious spirit
of our pioneers will not be downed. As
long as resistance is motivated by jus-
tice, it will succeed.

A GREAT PRESS

It will be well for our people to keep
informed on the status of the Jewish press
in Palestine.
The very important and very well writ-
ten volume "Education in Palestine," by
Dr. Noah Nardi, published by the Zionist
Organization of America, carries a foot-
note quoting the Information Division of
the Palestine government, revealing the
number of periodicals appearing in Pales-
tine in 1944 in various languages to be
as follows:

Hebrew: 8 morning papers, 2 afternoon
papers and 1 evening newspaper; 16 Hebrew
weeklies; 32 bi-weeklie sand monthlies; 13
occasional periodicals.
Arabic: 2 morning papers, 1 evening pa-
per; 2 weeklies; 4 monthlies; 1 bi-monthly.
. English: 1 morning paper; 2, weeklies;. .6
monthlies and 2 bi-monthlies... - -
Two dailies and' one weekly appear in Ger,._
man, 1 weekly and 2 biweeklies in. Polish,
1 Yiddish weekly, 1 Ciech weekly, 1 Armen-
ian weekly and a Greek quarterly. of
these are foreign language *Jewish' publican
tions.
In Trans-Jordan, where there aye very few
Jews, there is but one weekly magazine and
a paper which appears twice, 'weekly; -
Palestine has also become the center Of
Hebrew book publishing. Thousands of
books and pamphlets are published there
yearly in 22 Hebrew publishing'•houses.

U. S. zone of Germany, also held the con-
cession which gave Mahl monopoly of

Those advocating non-cooperation with
the Anglo-American inquiry commission
on Palestine have been strengthened by
President Truman's announced opposition
to the establishment of Palestine as a
Jewish State . . It is felt that in making
public his views at the present time, the
President prejudged the findings of the
commission, before it was even set up.
Mueh talk is heard in Washington con-
cerning 'the fact that. British Ambassador
Lord Halitak - found it necessary to be

DEMOBILIZATION

There is little chance of many ,41embers
of the Jewish Brigade, e :pecially its of-
ficers, being demobilized by the British,
as. long as the Palestine crisis continues.

A TRUE STORY

A couple of columns ago we told you
about a Rabbi in Long Island who's being
terrorized by anti-Semitic hoodlums*. : .
In - answer to the many inquiries: The
Rabbi is Nathan. Leiter of MaSpath, Long
Island . . , Quoting from his own affi-
davit the Rabbi tells of a campaign of
persecution that began on Succoth, 1941
.. Oil last Kol Nidre, the eve of the
Day. of Atonement, the Rabbi's house was
surrounded by hooligans who shouted
threats and thus terrified his wife and
child who were alone in the house . . .
On Hallowe'en night, anti-Semitic insults
were chalked on the sidewalk in frOnt
of the Rabbi's home . . . Incidentally' the
Rabbi is the only Jew living on that
street . . . The police lias now taken ener-
getic measures and a patrolman has been
stationed in front of the house day and
night . . . We are giving these details
because some of the letters we received
expressed skepticism and implied that the
story was concocted.

ON THE CHICAGO FRONT

Handbills against the Jewish ritual
slaughtering are being distributed on the
streets of the Windy City . . . They are
being circulated by the Pioneer News
Service, P. 0. Box 435, Chicago 90, Ill.
. . . The same outfit is also publishing an
anti-Semitic sheet called the Dispatch ..
The Gentile News published every month
at NO". 30 LaSalle Street claims a tre-
mendous increase in circulation . . . The
Gentile News is also the American Agent
of the Britain Publishing Society of Lon-
don, England, which puts out the Proto-
cols of the 'Elders of Zion . . . In other
words all that boasting of having stopped
the Gentile Cooperative Association . . .
is a lot of bunk . . . They are stronger
than ever and the Chicago District At-
torney: who supposedly withdrew their
charter hasn't achieved anything.
