PALESTINE

Lt. Isaac Ben Aaron, Palestine Jewish
volunteer and a former prisoner of war in
Germany, has been detained by military au-
thorities following his speech last week at
a session of Assephath Hanivcharim, Lower
House of Jewish Palestine's Parliament. Lt.
Ben Aaron, a member of Givat Haim, described
the brutality of the police and the military
in the raid on his settlement, • during which
seven Jews were killed. On a 50 day pre-
demobilization furlough, he has been detained
on the ground that still being in the army,
he had no right to deliver political speeches.
Jewish leaders claim it was not a political
speech and he merely related events to which
he had been ' an eyewitness.
A clash occurred at Kvuzath Hermonim,
a settlement in the vicinity of Tiberias, be-
tween Jewish • settlers and neighboring Arabs,
who trespassed on Hermonim land and began
ploughing it. Seven members, of Hermonim
and several trespassers were injured in the
scuffle.
Measures on how to deal with "illegal"
Jewish immigration engage the constant atten-
tion of the Palestine Government, Chief Secre-
tary J.V.W. Shaw, highest ranking member of
the Administration after the High Commis-
sioner declared at his monthly press confer-
ence in Tel Aviv with editors of Arab and
Jewish newspapers.

OVERSEAS

A total of 2,482 Jews from Britain and
8,507 Jews from the United States emigrated
to Palestine between 1922 and 1944, Colonial .
Secretary Hall stated in reply to a query by
Wilson Harris, M.P. Asked by Harris, whether
it would be fair to conclude from those figures
that the average Jew in Britain and the
United States had no desire for a "national
home," Hall replied that the questioner "must
draw his own conclusion."
Colonial Secretary Hall, replying to a
query, said that he regrets to announce that
eight Jews were killed and 63 are believed
to have been injured, while 65 soldiers and 16
policemen were injured, none fatally, in
"incidents" in Givat Haim and other settle-
ments last week. (Jews have estimated the
number of wounded Jews as "about 90".)
Birobidjan, the autonomous Jewish prov-
ince in Eastern Siberia, which for years was

chiefly an agricultural district, is now taking
the lead in post war industrial development
in the mineral-rich Far East. A new 'tin mine,
discovered during the war by a geologist,
Itsikson, is being extensively worked, and a
smelting city that will house over 30,000 per-
sons, is under construction near the mine.
Jews in Japanese prison camps in Singa-
pore and ,Siam were able to observe' import-
ant Jewish holidays and traditional Jewish
customs, during their two and a half years
imprisonment, according to reports by Rabbi
Chaim Nussbaum, Rabbi of the Jewish con-
gregation of Batavia, Java, who was a Japan-
ese prisoner from the fall of Java, early in
1942, until the - Japanese surrender last sum-
mer. In one PW camp, a small synagogue was
built, and Jewish cultural meetings were held
frequently.
Several Jewish members of the British
Communist Party, in London and the provinces,
have quit the party in protest against the anti-
Zionist policy adopted at the recent Com-
munist convention in London. The anti-Zionist
resolution was introduced by Jack Gaster, a
son of the late Chacham Gaster, former Chief
Rabbi of the Sephardic community in London.
Fearing new anti-Jewish outbreaks due
to an intensive campaign directed by sub-
versive forces believed to be acting with the
assistance of the Arab League and British
intelligence officers operating from. Cairo,
hundreds of Jews , are fleeing Tripoli daily
in hope of making their way across the Tunis-
ian border.
The first rally of the newly formed British
People's Party, an anti-Semitic, fascist organ-
ization led by the Duke of Bedford, broke up
in turmoil December 6, as opponents, who con-
stituted the majority of the audience chanted
in chorus: "We don't want fascism in Britain."
The fascist disciples of the Duke hurled back
the epitaph: "Go back to Palestine!" The
chant against British fascism rose, as the Duke
of Bedford, in the midst of his address, de-
clared that the war against Germany "was
a mistake."
The Arab League, through its Secretary
General, Azzam Bey, registered with the
British Government an official protest against
the establishment of a joint Anglo-American
Committee of Inquiry on Palestine, and against
interim continuation of Jewish immigration
into Palestine at 1500 per month.

Bloch Publishing Co., 31 W.
31st St., deserves commendation
for issuing, in revised form, the
great work by Dr. A. RevuSky,
"Jews in Palestine."
• First published in 1934, Dr. Re-
vusky's book at once gained
fame as the most authoritative
work on the subject of Palestine.
The revised edition was print-
ed from new plates and the en-
tire work was brought up to
date.
Covering the subject complete-
ly, without eliminating a single
important factor, Dr. Revusky
has included in his book the study
of Palestinian conditions before
the Balfour Declaration; the eco-
nomic, political and cultural as-
pects of nation-building; the
problem of health; the advances
made in commerce and industry,
and all other issues involved in
the Palestinian discussion.
Dr. Revusky, whose ' experi-
ences politically date back to the
days when he was a member of
the Cabinet in Lithuania, is one
of the outstanding authorities on
Palestine and his book is indis-
pensible for the Palestine book-
shelf.
