This Friday evening's service
and get-together of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek will feature a re-
view by Rabbi Gershon G. Ros-
enstock• of "The Unknown
Sancturay" by Aime Palliere.
Rabbi Rosenstock will officiate
at the service and Cantor Jacob
H, SOnenklar Will chant the con-
gregational readings and songs.
After the service, an Oneg
Shabbat in the social hall of the
synagogue, will consist of the
singing of songs of the Sabbath
by the audience, songs and reci-
tations, and a question and
answer period conducted by
Rabbi Rosenstock. Refreshments
will be served by the Sisterhood.
Members and friends and the
public are invited to attend.

NW Hebrew Cong. Plans
Meeting for January ;
Construction to Start

Northwest Hebrew Cong. and
Center is planning. a public
meeting for January, with a na-
tionally prothinent leader as
speaker.
The fund-raising committee,
under the chairmanship of Na-
than R. Epstein, is proceeding
with plans for the campaign to
raise funds for the synagogue
building.
The baSement, construction on
which will commence soon, will
provide for seating 850 people
rather than the 550 as previous-
ly planned. The main 'synagogue
will accommodate 1,100.

To Europe, Palestine

6 Grades Taught at Yeshivah;
New Pupils Accepted; Offer
Thorough Education

The new term of the Beth Ye-
hudah Day School will begin on
Jan. 28. The Day School now has
a cOmplete range of six grades.
All classes receive the same
academic education as in paral-
lel grades in public schools. At
the same time the pupils receive
a thorough Jewish education and
training, not only through their
class lessons, but through daily
prayers, • observances at meals,
etc. No effort is spared to inte-
grate the children's personalities
as American Jews.
The child, while receiving
benefits of a complete religious
education, is .h.ee after 4 o'clock
On week days and on Sunday
mornings for leisure time activ-
ities.. "
For the Children's • recreational
activities one of the rooms in
the new annex building has been
converted into a: gymnasium.. An
instructor of the Jewish Center
directs gym classes at the Yeshi :-
vah several times a week. -
Hot lunches are served daily
and bus transportation is pro-
vided.

"The. .Great Double Cross" is
the subject of the sermon to be
delivered by Rabbi Eliezer A.
Levi of Cong. Bnai Moshe, at
8:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21. Rabbi
Levi will discuss the present
British attitude on Palestine.
The service will be conducted
by Cantor David Katzman. A
social hour will follow. The Sis-
terhood will serve refreshments.

YPS of Shaarey Zedek
Holds Cultural Meeting

Young People's Society of
Shaarey Zedek will hold its first
cultural meeting of the season.
Dec. 16 at 3 p. m. The guest
speakers will be Mrs. Morris Ad-
ler, who will review a book. Rab-
bi G. G. Rosentock will speak on
YPS relationship to the Shaarey
Zedek.

A drive for "gifts for Jewish
Children" was begun by Detroit
Chapter of HaPoel HaMizrachi
at its Hanukah gathering at the
home of Drora Selesny. Toys,
games and small articles were
brought by members and. their
friends. *
All branches of HaPoel Ha-
Mizrachi are gathering items for
shipment to Jewish children in
Europe and Palestine.
A-nieeting of the Detroit Chap-
ter will be held next Wednesday
evening; at the home of Arlenen
Platt, : 2080 Monterey, to plan
continuation of this drive.

Rabbi Folkman is one of the
prominent younger Reform Rab-
bis in the State of Michigan. He
was graduated from Hebrew
Union College in .1931 and for
five years was Rabbi of the Re-
form Temple in Jackson. He has
been in Grand Rapids since 1936:

"Reformed Judaism and Zion-
ism" will be the subject of the
final lecture in the series Rabbi
Leon Fram has been delivering
on the theme of the evolution
and significance of Reform Juda-
ism, at the Sabbath Eve service,
Friday, Dec. 21, 8:30 p. m. in
the Lecture Hall of the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
Rabbi Fram has been dedicat-
ing this series of addresses to his
Alma Mater, the Hebrew Union
College of Cincinnati, which is
now celebrating the '79th anni-
versary of its founding by Rabbi
Isaac M. Wise. The congrega-
tion will read special prayers in
behalf of the Hebrew Union Col-
lege.
At the service the Bar Mitzvah
blessing will be conferred upon
Gary Robert LaBret, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Benjamin •LaBret. The
congregation will be guests of
Mr. and Mrs. LaBret at a recep-
tion. in honor of the Bar Mitzvah
of their son.

Bnai Moshe Men's Club
Host to Vet ts Thursday

Discharged veterans whose
families are affiliated with Cong.
Bnai Moshe will be guests of
the Men's Club at the get-to-
gether dinner at 6;30 p.m. next
Thursday, in the social hall.
Rabbi Eliezer A. Levi, on ter-
minal leave from the army Chap-
lain corps, will lead an informal
"shmoos," with the veterans af-
ter the dinner.

A committee under the chair-
manship of Sam Freedman is
making arrangements. Assisting

A. Finkelstein.

Bnai Jeshurun, the second old-
est synagogue in New York, cele-
brated its 120th anniversary at a
dinner in the Jeshurun Coin-
munity House, where a message
of greeting from President Tru-
man was read, expressing the
hope that "the- sphere of infhi-
ence of the congregation which
has wrought so much for God
and country during the last 120
years will ever widen in the
generations that lie ahead."
The speakers at the dinner
were Basil O'Connor, chairman
of the American Red Cross;
Brig. Gen. David Sarnoff, Dr.
Robert W. Searle, general secre-
tary of the Greater New York
Federation of Churches,. Prof.
Robert Gordis, president of the
Rabbinical. Assembly of Ameri-
ca, Dr. David de Sola Pool, rabbi
of Cong. Shearith Israel; oldest
Jewish congregation in America,
who delivered the invocation, Dr.
Israel Goldstein, spiritual leader
of the Bnai Jeshurun Congrega-
tion since 1918, and Charles W.
Endel, president of the congre-
gation.

The High School Department .

ple Beth El is planning a New
Year's Eve dance at 9:30 p.m.
Monday, Dec. 31, in the Temple
social hall. The music . will be

Russell Barnes, commentator on inter-
national affairs, is back on the job at
The Detroit News at the conclusion of
his work as chief of the Psychological
Warfare Bureau of the OWI in the
Mediterranean area, during which time
he commanded 2,000 American, British
and French army men and civilians.

Mr. Barnes is the first civilian in the
OVVI to win the highly, coveted. War
Department's Exceptional Civilian
Service Emblem. Read his reports on
