Friday, December 7, 1945 Jewish Youth's LISTENING 0 S By Danny Raskin YEARS BACK, Sam Blender the super-market man w as known as "The bagel man of the East Side" . . . That was in New York, and his friends number many of the greatest names in show business . . . When they come to town its memory time for confabs of the good old days at Muskin's Confectionery . . . Went to Hebrew school with Jan Pierce then Pincus Pearlman . . . Morris Cohen, mayor of Pitts- burgh's and Rabbi Morris Adler were also in the classes ... hying Rapper (then Rappaport) the top technical advisor at Warren Bros. refers to little Sammy as "The guy who sleeps in a can of short- ening!" . . . The last time the Ritz Bros. were here, they talk- ed about how Sam would sit and watch them sell knishes in Coney island . . . Harry argued- he was the one who made the delicacies while the others did the selling . .. The boys almost wrecked the 12th St. eatery they were in! * * * THE "HALF TRACK" in which Morry Noble and two buddies found themselves behind German lines was considered lost in ac- tion . . . until they finally rode into camp two weeks later with sniper wounds, a jammed ma- chine gun and 150 prisoners . . . The Krauts gave up rather than fight the battered and lonely tank . . . Morry is back in civies and to his well-known tasks with the p. a. systems and voice and commercial recording outfits. * * * IT'S PAST the gossip stage about Al Sparage and Shirley Baron . . . She's the daughter of South Haven's night-club • prexy . .. The role of Cupid was aptly played by Carole Harris, local dancer then appearing • at the spot . • . If all goes well, the wedding should be around next June. - * *•* THE SECOND in their series of dances is set by the Julius Rosenwald Post of American Le- gion for Dec. 16, in the Starlit Room of Hotel Webster Hall .. • Talented Mickey Wolfe and his fine band of rhythm renders will be on hand again .. . and that's good news . . . Bill Cohen is chairmaning these affairs. * * HA HA DEPT. . .. The wise guy who thought a traffic ticket was just another way for the cops to say hello has been edu- cated . . . Conveniently "forgot" about the ducats . . . until eight had accumulated . . . His mem- ory was revived by a couple of "the boys" . . . and he's in jail now . . . His so-called influential friends can't even get him out on bail! * * * WE CAN at least boast of one thing in common with the great Paul Robeson . . . Mel Shuman•is one our favorite portrait photogs, also . Glad to hear that Mel's new studio has opened on Lin- wood near Davison . . . Before going into service, he worked with a great many world-famed artists, and some of his known shots of the Negro singer are with Robeson's son at Princeton U . • . Not too few famous peo- ple have sat for his "Individually yours" portraits. * * * WE BOW with pride to Mrs. A. Winokur, gold star mother of Lt. Jack Winokur . . . Though a son had been taken from her and her heart has bled with grief, she became the away- from-home mother of many oth- ers . . . Over 350 boys, Jew and Gentile, have sat to dinner in her home. .. She is not too well a woman, but her noble efforts have made many a lonely guy happy . . . and they remember ... Like last Mother's Day, when THE JEWISH NEWS S/Sgt. Dan A:mold Receives Discharge S/Sgt. Daniel Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Arnold 'of 2909 W. Philadelphia, has return- ed after 27 months i n E rope with the AAF. He has been honorably dis- charged and resides at 2205 W. Philadelphia with his wife and daughters, Rochelle and Susan. flowers galore came from over- seas to "Another Mom." * * WHOEVER REMOVED the lizard: wallet from Mary Bob- bin's purse at a. local dance re- cently, should - know that the Sentiment attached to it is far beyond value . . . If it can be re- turned, it will bring much hap- piness . As far as gals leaving their bags alone, however, we again say, a woman's purse never gets old enough to take care of itself! * * * ONCE HE GOT overseas, the Army didn't lose much time with ad man, Jerry Brasch . . . Four days after arriving on the far shore, he was in the Battle of the Bulge . . . Abe's brother has been discharged after 23 months of khaki and 16 across the water. * * * THE CARETAKER of that apartment who chooses to fly Our Flag in front should learn the code first . . . Not lowering it at sundown and allowing it to withstand wind and rain is a dis- honorable act! . . . Flying our Stars and Stripes should be as sacred to others as it was to the fellows who fought for it! * * * THE ULTRA-MODERN build- ing put up by Hudson dealers Herman and Barney Teal out Gratiot way, is the absolute last thing .. . A new angle for cus- tomers waiting for their car to be serviced are the facilities for a hot shower. * * * SEVEN YEARS AGO, the Bialistocker Juniors had 500 members .. . That was too long ago in a lot of lives, particularly Sylvia Goldberg who is making plans for a reunion . . . But Syl- via won't be able to have them all together. . . . Many are overseas . . . and won't be com- ing back, because the group's record in this war has been among the greatest, including the toll of lives lost.
