In Memoriam
By ANN SAXER
(EDITOR'S NOTE: This poem was
written by Mrs. Saxer for special
reading at a recent meeting of the
Woodward Study Club, affiliated
with the Jewish Center Mothers'
Clubs, on the occasion of a memo-
rial program in tribute to sons of
members who died in service of
their country. Trees were planted
In Jewish National Fund forests in
Palestine on the occasion of this
memorial meeting. Mrs. Saxer
served as president of her club and
on the advisory board of the Pres-
idents' Council of the Mothers'
Clubs.)
Dear God, was it your Will
That our dear ones should depart
And leave an emptiness to fill
The aching in our heart?
VIENNA, (JTA) — Asserting
that little has been done since
the liberation of Austria to re-
store Jews to their former jobs
and to return their property, the
Vienna Jewish community has
submitted a memorandum to the
Renner Government containing
the following demands:
1. The government should in-
clude Jews on all commissions
which will decide compensation
and reparations for Jews.
2. Jewish civil service employ-
es should be reinstated, and as-
signed the rank which normally
would be theirs had they not
been ousted.
3. Jews ousted from private
employment should be reinstated
immediately, and receive the
same salary and seniority as non-
Jewish employes who were not
dismissed.
4. Jewish-owned homes and
other real estate should be re-
stored to their former owners, as
registered in 1938, before the
Anschluss.
5. Former Jewish enterprises
which are still "aryanized" should
be immediately returned.
6. Where it is not possible to
return former Jewish - owned
property, the owners should be
recompensed.
