the Joint Anglo-American Com-
mission to inquire into the ques:
tion of Palestine and the situa-
tion of the Jews in Europe should
in no way preclude or delay the
granting of President Truman's
request for admission of 100,000
displaced European Jews into
Palestine, Secretary of • State
Byrnes was told by Jacob Blau-
stein, chairman of the executive
committee of the American
Jewish Committee, and John
Slawson, its executive vice presi-
dent.
The American Jewish Commit-
tee urged recognition of the Bal-
four Declaration and the terms
of the Mandate for Palestine en-
trusted . to Great Britain by 50
nations and approved by the U.

Bnai Moshe Women
Hold Dinner Sunday

Months of tireless -effort. will
culminate -on Sunday evening,
Dec. 2, with the Hanukah victory
dinner of Congregation Bnai
Moshe Sisterhood.'
Rabbi E. I. Levi, newly elected
associate rabbi, will be the guest
speaker. Cantor - David Katzman
will be heard in a repertoire of
Hebrew and • Jewish melodies.
The president of the Sisterhood,.
Mrs. E. I. Goodman, will preside:
Ben Goldman will serve as toast-
master. The evening Will be con-
cluded with - dancing. •
This is the main fund-raising
project for the. Sisterhood. Pro-
ceeds will be utilized for im-
provements of the synagogue.
Preparations for the affair have
been handled by a committee
headed by Mrs. Morris Rosenberg
and -Mrs. Louis Kepes. Mrs. Theo-
dore Curtis had charge of th'
tickets. Mrs: Adolph Deutsch 'and
Mrs. Regina Hirsch took care of
the table arrangements.
The next monthly meeting of
the Sisterhood' will 'be held on
Monday afternoon, Dec. 10, in the
form of a luncheon honoring Mrs.
E. I. Levi, wife of the newly
elected rabbi.

Evelyn Gurvitch Gives
Concert Wednesday ,

EVELYN GURVITCH

Evelyn Gurvitch, popular De-
troit pianist, will be presented in
concert by the Town Concert Bu-
reau next Wednesday evening,
Dec. 5, in the Lecture Hall of the
Detroit Institute of Art.

Gellman Re-Elected
To Head Regional
Young. Israel Board

The Regional Council of Mid-
western Young Israel was reor-
ganized at a Thanksgiving week-
end conference in Detroit and at-
tended by representatives of five
Young Israel branches:
Charles T. Gellman, president
of the local organization, was re-
elected to head the regional
council.
The council -will be composed
of three delegates from each of
the middle western branches. It
will meet in member cities for
inter-city planning and assistance,
exchange of ideas, and coordina-
tion of activities.
The next meeting will be held
in February in Cleveland to plan
for the first postwar midwestern
Young Israel convention, to be
held in St. Louis next Thanks-
giving.
Delegates and guests from other
cities, who participated here in
the meetings and socials, included
Israel Comet, president; Esther
Friedman, secretary; Norman
Spero, financial secretary; Myron
Friedman and Lena Atlschuld of
Cleveland; William Cher r i c k,
president of St. Louis Young Is-
rael; and Miss Rachel Bergman of
Cincinnati.

Hanukah Program at N. W. Synagogue Men's
Club Dinner on Dec. 9

With booking of talent from

The Bnai David Religious
School will celebrate Hanukah
on Sunday, at 11 a. ni in the
synagogue; Elmhurst and 14th.
Rabbi Sperka, Cantor Adler
and representatives of various
grades will participate. Parents
and members of the synagogue
are invited.
The classes of the Religious
-School held. in Central High
School will not' meet in Central
on that Sunday. All children
are asked 'to come directly to the
synagogue.

At Hillel Service

For this Friday, at the Uni-
versity of Michigan Bnai .Brith
Hillel Foundation, an Oneg Shab-
bat has been arranged by Avu,
kah, student Zionist organiza-
tion.
The Sabbath-Hanukah service
will feature an address by Dr.
Judah .Goldin, national assistant
director of Bnai Brith H i 11 e 1
Foundations.
Special Detroit gu ; of the
Foundation this Friday evening
will be members of East Side
Lodge.
Miss June White of Detroit is
in charge of the program, as-
sisted by Benson 'Jaffee, student
director, of Cleveland.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, Hillel will
hold a party to commemorate
Hanukah. The evening's 'program
will feature informal dancing,
card and table games and enter-
tainments.
Dr. and Mrs. Reuben Kahn and
Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Glass of Ann
Arbor, will serve as chaperones
during the evening.
Miss Barbara Levin of Chi-
cago and Marshall Wallace of
Detroit are in charge of the af-
fair, assisted by Beryle Walters,
student director, Miss Ethel Isen-
berg of Detroit, Miss Rita Hy-
man of Miami, Fla., and Edythe
Levin, student director, of New
Gardens, N. Y., are in charge of
entertainment.

Youth Festival Music
Entry Date Extended

Music entries for the Detroit
Youth Festival Childrens' Con-
cert and $200 in awards, offered
by the Grinnell Foundation of
Music "to encourage young
musicians in their creative ef-
forts" will be accepted until Jan.
15. Music in any form written by
young musicians up to the age of
18 will be considered for awards,
for performance, and for exhibit
at the Detroit Youth Festival,
Music should be sent to' Mrs.
Mary Carrick, concert director,
Detroit Youth Festival, Wayne
University, Detroit 1. Music will
be returned after _March 30, if
postage is enclosed.
The Detroit Symphony Orches.

events planned for March, 1946.

Northwest Congregation an-
nounced the completion of plans
for the first annual dinner dance
to be staged at the Fort Wayne
Hotel on Sunday, Dec. 9. Jules
Klein and his orchestra will pro-
vide music for dancing, featuring
Harriet Lewis, concert pianist. A
seven-course dinner is to be
catered by Lachar's.
Max Haidy and Hy Storchan
are co-chairmen of the event,
with Sam Bez in charge of
tickets and Alfred Brook of pub-
licity.

Bnai David Men's Club
Holds Hanukah Affair
On President's Night

The Men's Club of Cong. Bnai
David will hold its annual Hanu-
kah festival in conjunction with
President's Night on Thursday,
Dec. 6, in the social hall of the
synagogue.
On this occasion, past presi-
dents of the organization will be
honored for their services and
will be presented with engraved
gavels.
Other features will include the
kindling of the Hanukah lights
and the singing of Hanukah songs
led by Cantor Hyman J. Adler of
Congregation Bnai David in a
special repertoire of Hanukah
music.
Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka will
deliver an address on "The Mod-
ern Maccabees" to be followed by
a question and answer period.
Benjamin Fellows, toastmaster
of the evening, will summarize in
brief the past activities of the or-
ganization.

Coughlin Followers Aid
Ousted School Teachers

NEW YORK (JPS)—Followers
of Charles E. Coughlin are rally-
ing behind a move to recall the
suspension of Miss May Quinn,
Brooklyn public school teacher
awaiting trial by a special board
of education committee on charg-
es of preaching racial intolerance
in her classrooms, Friends of De-
mocracy Inc., charges in a letter
to the New York City Board of
Education. A petition was drawn
up at a "card party" given in
honor of Father Coughlin, Nov.
20, under the auspices of the
"American Citizens' Committee,"
an organization which cooperat-
ed with the Christian Front.

Shaarey Zedek Women
Set Hanukah Program

Sisterhood of Shaarey Zedek
will celebrate Hanukah with a
special program on Dec.. 10, which
opens with a dessert luncheon at
12:30. Songs and readings will be
rendered by Miss Drora Selesny
and Mrs. Sarah Friedman,

Miss Selesny will be accompa-
nied on the piano by Miss Ko-
walsky. Mrs. Friedman has been
outstanding in cultivated Jewish
circles for her interpretations of
Jewish prose and poetry.

Rabbi Rosenstock will greet the
members. Mrs. Samson S. Witten-
berg is program chairman.
Members are requested to bring
small gifts for veterans at Percy
Jones Hospital.

Cong. Bnai Abraham
Gives 4 Sifre Torah

-A meeting of the Cong. Ahvath
Achim Bnai Abraham was held
Monday, Nov. 26, at the Rose
Sittig Cohen Bldg.
The congregation donated four
Sifre Torah, 500 prayer books
and other Law Books and Sfor-
im for European Jewry. In view
of the building material short-
ages, the Congregation Member-
ship voted to delay construction
of its new building at Dexter
and Tyler until the spring of
1946.
A dinner and dance will be
held by the congregation in Jan-
uary.
