Kindle Ye the Festive Light

A Hanukah Poem in Free Verse

By DR. NOAH E. ARONSTAM

Behold—the Feast of Lights!
The tale perchance is old,
And yet is ever new:
It tells of Mattathias,
Named the Hasmonean,
Called the Hammer of his people,
It tells the tale of Epiphanes,
Designate as Epimanes,
Antiochus, cruel, madman.
The Syrian host was led by Heron,
It advanced, it advanced:
Chariots and stalwart warriors,
With well-comparisoned behemoths----
And the air was charged with menace.
Perched high above the gorges and the clefts,
Up on cliffs and tortuous. pathways,
Known only to their leader, •
Matched the handful of Judeans.
The Syrian host marched proudly on—
Oh, can the weak withstand the mighty?
Hark! beyond the overhanging crests
Suddenly arose a tumult,
Suddenly there came a quaking and a bursting
The behemoths in the panic, sorely frightened
Trampled on the terrified and fleeing phalanx
Of the foe; overwhelmed, stricken
Was the might of Syria,
In the dust there lay her haughty legions.
Thenceforth yearly as a token
Of the victory of Judas Maccabaeus--
Wrought by a higher Will—
We kindle the festive lights, ,
And dedicate again to its memory
Our fealty as a people, •
With ever growing trust
That might never can subdue
Our will to live!
Sing my soul a Song of Thanks,
Sing my soul a Song of Freedom!
And thus with hope in your hearts
*Kindle ye the festive lights!

Hanukah

By SARAH PHILKA

This faith was their shield—their hope and their pride.
Come gather around me this glorious night,
And revel in warmth by Hanukah's light.
The candles that burn are a symbol sublime,
Of courage that rings from the pages of time.
Oh listen,—the wind from over the seas
Has a tale to tell of the Maccabees.
A brotherly lot who fought for their right
And proved that their faith was greater than might.
In glory they triumphed with God as their guide.
Awake Israelites! Rejoice in these truths,
Our forefathers died that we may be Jews.
Rejoice and resolve that this spirit last,
That we in the future draw strength from the past.

On Thanksgiving Day, friends
