NW Hebrew Cong.
To Break Ground
For Its Synagogue

Dr. Glazer to Give
Thanksgiving Talk

NorthWest Hebrew Congrega-
tion and Center will have its
ground breaking ceremonies to
celebrate the beginning of work
on the first wing of the building
on Curtis at Santa Rosa, on .Sun-
day, - Nov. 25, it was announced
by Ira G.. Kaufman, president of
the. synagogUe.
The first wing will consist of
a social hall; 75 by 80 feet, seat-
ing 600 .people, The temporary
synagogue will provide for separ-
ation into classrooms for the Sun-
day School.
N. R. Epstein and Adolph Lich-
ter, chairmen of the fund raising
and financial committee, have
commenced a drive to raise funds
to complete the entire structure.
David Safran, a member of the
committee, has been named
editor of magazine literature to
be mailed to members and the
community in support of the
drive.

Interfaith Program
At NW Hebrew Cong.

An interfaith program will be
sponsored by the Men's Club of
Northwest Hebrew Congregation
next Monday evening at the Bag-
ley School auditorium, Curtis
and Roselawn, The speakers
will be:
Fr. Robert Elton of the Uni-
versity of Detroit, Rabbi Milton
Aron, director of the Bnai Brith.
Hillel Foundation at Wayne 'Uni-
versity, and the Rev. Robert E.
Burtt, minister of Mayflower
Congregational Church. Mann3
Lax will preside and Malcom
Rivkin will introduce the speak-
ers. The public is invited.
Harriet Lewis, concert pianist,
will be presented at the dinner
dance of the Men's Club at the
Fort Wayne Hotel on Dec. 6.
Max Haidy and Hy Storchan, co-
chairmen of the affair, urge that
tickets be secured by calling Sam

Dave Miller retains high aver-
age in honors for the season in
the club's bowling program.

Temple Israel Men
To Hear Val Clare

Charles Aller, chairman of the
annual smoker of the Men's Club
of Temple Israel, announces that
Val Clare of Station CKLW, who
recently returned from a trip
through Europe, will be the main
speaker at the smoker to be held
at the Rose Sittig Cohen Bldg.,
13226 Lawton, Thursday, Dec. 13,
at 8 p. m.

Hebrew Parochial School
To Hold Hanukah Party

A Hanukah party will be given
at 1:30 p. m., Dec. 2, at the
Detroit Parochial School, Lin-
wood and Elmhurst, by the Sis-
terhood.
Two plays will be presented
by the children of the primary
grades.
A debate "Why Remain a
Jew" will be presented by two
students of the . high school,
Abraham Kar, negative, Philip
Rabinowitz, affirmative.

The Woman's Auxiliary of the
United Hebrew Schools acknow-
ledges the receipt of a contribu-
tion from the officers and direc-
tors of the National Bank of De-
troit in memory of Isaac Shetzer,
and from Mr. and Mrs. Milford
Pregerson in memory of Lt. Da-
vid Moss.

"America Faces Forward — A
Thanksgiving Day Address," will
be the subject of Dr. B. Benedict
Glazer's sermon at the Sabbath
Eve Services at Temple Beth El
this Friday at 8:15 p.m.
On Friday, Nov. 30, at 8:15
p.m. the Junior High School
Choir of the Temple, organized
by Jason H. Tickton, music di-
rector and organist, will make its
first appearance and will render
a program of Hanukah music.

Shaarey Zedek Men
Plan Bond Program

A Victory Bend' rally arrang-
ed by the Shaarey Zedek Men's
Club for 'next Wednesday eve-
ning, in the social hall of the
synagogue, will feature the emi-
nent pianist, composer and musi-
cal analyst, Abraham ChasMs.
Purchase of a bond will be re-
quired of those desiring admis-
sion.
Mr. Chasins, member of the
faculty of the Curtis Institute,
has been soloist with the N. Y.
Philharmonic Orchestra and
Philadelphia and Boston orches-
tras. He is a radio commentator
on music and his compositions
have been played and hailed by
men like Toscanini.

Mt. Sinai to Hold
Thi-inksgiving Rites

Port Huron's Cong. Mt. Sinai's
Thanksgiving service on Friday
night will be conducted by
Rabbi Selig A. Auerbach. Stu-
dents of the intermediate grade
of Mt. Sinai Religious School
will participate.
Cpl. David H. Drescher and
S/Sgt. Allan Stone have re-
turned. Both had been in the
army three years, and have seen
service in Europe.
Rabbi Auerbach has been
asked to lecture before the Port
Huron Junior College on "The
Jews in Palestine."
Sam Adinoff recently addressed
the Port Huron-Sarnia Interna-
tional Ministerial Alliance on
"The Jewish Claim to Palestine."

Beth Yehudah Plans for 700 Pupils;
Board Approves Poplack as Director

In his educational report pre-
sented at the semi-annual meet-
ing of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah,
Rabbi Simcha Wasserman, dean
of the school, reported that the
present attendance numbers 534

of kindling the Hanukah lights.
Officers of the congregation and
its affiliated societies will lead

ported by Dan Frohrnan and the
Temple Israel Choir, accompanied
by Karl W. Haas at the Auditor-
ium organ, will render tradition-
al Hanukah music and excerpts

CINCINNATI—The 70th anni-
versary of Hebrew Union Col-
lege, the oldest Jewish theologi-
cal seminary in the U. S. will be
observed on a special NBC pro-
gram, Saturday, Nov. 24 (7:30-8
p. m., EST).
Dr: Maurice Eisendrath, execu-
tive director of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations,
will be narrator. Soloists will be
Cantors Abraham Shapiro, Tem-
ple Bnai Abraham, Newark;
Frederick Lechner, West End Re-
form Synagogue, New York, and
Emil Rosen of Cincinnati.

Morris Snow presented the fi-
nancial report' and showed that
expenseS for the past five months
totalled $36,000-79 per cent for
salaries and 21 per cent for ad-
ministrative costs. Tuition provid-
ed 38 per cent of the income.
Rabbi M. J. Wohigelernter,
president of the Yeshivah, paid
tribute to the late Mr. Louis
Dann, pioneer worker for Torah
Judaism in Detroit. A painting
in oil, the work of the daughter-
in-law of the late Mr. Dann, was
unveiled by Sol Dann, a son
Morris Mohr, vice-president of
Beth Yehtldah, presided over the
meeting.
The board of directors approv-
ed the selection of Rabbi Alvin
M. Poplack as executive director
of the Yeshivah.
Rabbi Poplack comes to the
Yeshivah after a year of service
with the National Jewish Wel-
fare Board as a civilian field
chaplain. He is a native of Seat-
tle, Wash. He took his secular
work at the University of Wash-
ington and acted as Rabbi for the
High Holy Days in Boise, Idaho,
and at Beth Jacob Congregation
in Detroit. Upon graduation, Rab-
bi Poplack applied for a com-
mission in the Army Chaplains
Corps, and subsequently turned
to the Army and Navy program
of the National JWB for assign-
ment as a JWB field director and
civilian chaplain.
