The death on Oct. 14 of Gerson
Garfinkle, 68, who was well
known in Detroit, having made
his home here for several years
with his daughter, Mrs. Samson
Wittenberg of '2655 Burlingame,
was mourned here this week.
Mr. Garfinkle' died in Toronto.
Funeral services were held Oct.
15. Dr. Judah Washer and Rabbi
Horowitz officiated. He is sur-
vived by his wife, Bella, of Tor-
onto; two sons, David Garfinkle
of Toronto and Benjamin R. Gar-
field of Detroit, and three grand-
children.
A pioneer Zionist, he had been
host to the world's outstanding
Zionist leaders, and the late Dr.
Schmarya Levin always prefer-
red to make the Garfinkle home
his stop-over when in or near
Toronto.
In a tribute' to the memory
of Mr. Garfinkle, Dr. Washer of
Toronto wrote: •
"Gerson Garfinkle was righte-
ous before his God, : he was a
Talmid Chochom and his deal-
ings with his fellow men were
without blemish.
"He was a pioneer in Toronto
"Jewish life and many of the in-
stitutions now so firmly planted
in our community were due eith-
er to his initiative or to his un-
selfish assistance. For many
years he scrupulously cared for
a vital part of the religious needs
of our community and to • his last
day there burned within him the
warm and inspiring light of Jew-
ish values. He was a than of
many interests and his keen
mind' had a ready grasp of the
problems of not only the Jew in
the modern world but also of the
world's problems."
