Hadassah's Goal $3,010,000;
Starts Medical School Drive

Mrs. Moses P. Epstein Re-Elected President; Dr. Wise Teas
Women Zionists "People That Will Not Resort fo
Self-Defense Is Not Fit to Survive"

CHICAGO, (JTA)—A national
goal of $3,010,000 for the coming
year was proclaimed here at the
closing session of the four-day
Hadassah convention, which re-
elected all its top officers, headed
by Mrs. Moses P. Epstein,
president.

Addressing a dinner session,
Sen. Owen Brewster of Maine
told the 1,000 delegates that Arab
threats in Palestine were "a
myth" since no Arab armies
exist. He urged the United States
to support a Jewish Palestine as
"a periscope and listening post"
in "a desert of backward primi-
tive Arab countries."

Must Resort to Self-Defense
Dr. Stephen S. Wise warned
that although the Jewish Agency
does not advocate violence, "re-
sistance with firmness, whatever
the consequences, is the watch-
word. We- know the consequences
are bound to be grave," he con-
tinued, "especially since Jewish
resistance may provoke counter
measures by the British. But a
people that will not resort to
self-defense is not fit to survive."
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, repre-
senting the Jewish Agency, said
that the Jews in Palestine want
self-government immediately and
"will not stand for a foreign
regime be it British or any
other." He pointed out that if
Arab states such as Syria, Iraq,
Lebanon and "medieval Saudi
Arabia" deserve to rule them-
selves, "why not democratic
Palestine?"

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
clash on the floor of the House
of Representatives between Rep.
John Rankin of Mississippi and
Rep. Emanuel Cellar of New
York, during which the Missis-
sippi Congressman referred to
Celler as the "Jewish gentleman
from New York,' brought a de-
mand from Rep. Vito Marcanto-
nio of New York that "this Jew-
baiting in the House must stop."
He expressed the hope that for
the sake of a "united America"
such a discussion would never
again occur on the floor of the
House.
The exchange between Ceiler .
and Rankin arose when the latter
objected to suggestions by Celler
and five other Congressmen that
the House Committee on Un-
American Activities probe nation-
alist and • anti-Semitic groups.
Rankin described Celler's de-
mands as the "most unmitigated
procedure ever seen in Congress
from the Jewish gentlemen from
New York," and after Celler ob-
jected, asked whether he was pro-
testing being called "Jewish" or
"gentleman." The other Congress-
men were Reps. DeLacy, Jackson
and Coffee of Washington and
Patterson and Doyle of Califor-
nia.

Pre-Bar Mitzvah Boys
Form Jr. Congregation

An aditional junior congrega-
tion for children of pre-Bar Mitz-
vah age was organized at the
David W. Simons School. This
class is directed by Abraham
Panush of the staff of the United
Hebrew Schools.
The senior congregation, com-
posed of children of Bar Mitzvah
age, is directed by M. Schachter.
The children's attendance at
Sabbath services is increasing.
They learn to chant the prayers
properly and to conduct the ser-
vices in the traditional manner.

A $4,000,000 campaign for the
establishment of a Hebrew Uni-
versity-Hadassah Medical 'School
on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem was
launched at the convention. The
session at which the drive was
announced was addressed by Dr.
A. C. Ivy of Northwestern Uni-
versity Medical School, Dr. E,
M. Bluestone, director of the
'Montefiore Hospitol in New
York, and Ira Hirschmann, co-
chairman of the campaign, who
said that Jews must now get the
medical education denied them
for a decade in Europe and in
many places in the United States.
The convention addressed a
message to Prime Minister
Attlee protesting against the
White Paper. Pointing out that
the British Labor Government is
moving away from its own clear-
ly stated position with regard to
Palestine, it warned that "the
Jewish people will fight for the
rights promised by Britain and
by the League of Nations—the
right of every Jew who wishes to
go to Palestine to enter the
country freely." The note also
emphasizes that the conven-
tion fully supports the demand
that Palestine be established as
a Jewish Commonwealth.
