THE FUTURE OF DETROIT
is IN YOUR HANDS

Ibn Saud's Congressional Guests "Pity" the Jews
WASHINGTON, D. C., (JPS)—Two Republican members of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Frances P. Bolton of Ohio
and Rep. Karl E. Mundt of South Dakota, both of whom were among
Congressmen who visited King Ibn Saud while on a tour of the
Middle East, issued a joint report warning that it is dangerous "to
simply dump thousands of defenseless Jewish immigrants into Pales-
tine at this time ... unless we are willing to send American soldiers
along to maintain order by force." They threatened that "bloodshed
may easily arise from hastily, considered, abrupt action or . . . re-
fusal to face the basic facts in the perplexed Palestine problem."
-Sixty-one year-old Congresswoman Bolton, while in Cairo, was
quoted as describing Ibn Saud as "terrific." Being a woman, how-
ever, she was not permitted to dine at the King's table and took her
meals in Ibn Saud's harem while in his kingdom.
Perplexed Rankin Rebuked
Rep. John E. Rankin (D. Miss.) was sharply rebuked by some
of his fellow Congressmen, when he attempted to block the special
one-hour discussion period on Palestine, and to link Zionists with a
•"Communistic" attack on the DAR.
Rep. Rankin demanded that the House repudiate recent attacks
by some of its members pn the DAR, for refusing to permit a Negro
pianist use of its Philadelphia hall, "before we start waving the red
flag in the face of the British Empire." Discussion of the Palestine
problem, he said;- was like "hurling an atomic bomb into our inter-
national affairs. The anti-Zionist Jews, who are also anti-Com-
munist, do not want this Palestine question agitated," Rankin said.
Rep. Enianuel Celler (D. N.Y.) accused Rankin of "habitual
Red-smearing and witch-hunting." Palestine haS nothing to do With
the DAR except that Britain has forgotten her pledge to the Jews
and the DAR denies justice and equity to the Negroes, Congressman
Celler said.
. Rep. Coffee (D. Wash.) told Rankin that America "has just con-,
eluded a war caused in no small measure by racial pogroms and
bigotry," and warned him not to encourage "prejudice or hatred
here which can lead to disaster."

No Animosity Between Jews and Arabs
LONDON, (JTA)—Jews and Arabs are mixing freely in Tel
Aviv and in Jaffa, and peace reigns in the Arab villages, the P_ales-
tine correspondent of the Evenipg Standard reports from Tel Aviv.
Lord Samuel, first High Commissioner for Palestine, in a broad-
cast, declared that he does not understand "how the immediate
establishment of a Jewish or Commonwealth can be advocated as
long as there are a million Arabs in Palestine.".The Jews, he said,
have a great class claim on Palestine and the Jewish National Home
there has been a great success. "I regard it unfortunate, however,
that a controversey Should take place at the present time on the
question of a Jewish State," he stated.

British Probe Alleged Smuggling Ring of Jewish Brigade
LONDON, (JTA)—Members of the Jewish Brigade have been
called in by British intelligence authorities in Austria, and inter-
rogated regarding an alleged secret Jewish organization operating
an "underground railway" on the model of American abolitionism,
to smuggle Jews from Eastern and Central Europe into Palestine,
the Independent Jewish Press Service has been informed by a reli-
able source in Prague. The British authorities are reportedly also
suspicious of American Jewish soldiers stationed in Bohemia and
Austria, of complicity in the organization running this "underground
railway."

Sweeping Powers to Curb Illegal Immigration
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—High C ommissioner-Lord Gort was given
sweeping powers to curb illegal immigration into Palestine, includ-
ing the right to detain for an indefinite period persons attempting
to enter the country illegally.
The order, published in the Official Gazette, also gives the
Palestine Government authority to confiscate any vessel or aircraft
used to smuggle in illegal immigrants, and provide fines of $4,000,
or imprisonment or both, for the owners, masters or agents of any
such vessels or planes. The presence of illegal immigrants will be
considered proof of the guilt of those in command.

Czech Jewish Suicides

lou -will vote on Nov. 6, not only for an individual can _ di-
date for mayor, but on this grave issue:

Shall the government of Detroit remain in the hands of the
people of Detroit, or shall it be turned over to out-of-town
interests who have no stake in the present or the future of
this city?

The answet is entirely up to you—the people.

What happens to Detroit ' in the next two critical, post-war
years will determine the future of this, your city, for genera-
tions to come.

You can retain your city's present proud position as the nation's
industrial metropolis, constantly broadening opportunities for
happiness and prosperity for all who live here.

The unthinkable alternative is that you could let Detroit down,
permitting your town to become the No Man's Land of indus-
trial America, her industries stifled; her working men and
women robbed of their right to earn a living.

It's up to you.

Yotor vote will decide the issue.
