Col. Juan Peron's return to power in Argentina was accom-

panied by anti-Semitic oUtrages • which • resulted in the invasion
of a synagogue and attacks upon Jews.
'Joseph Newman, in a cable to the N. Y; -Herald Tribune from
Buenos Aires, reveals that bands of Peronistas, celebrating their
leader's victory, invaded the Jewish quarter, stoned individuals
and homes, engaged Jewish youths in fights and shouted offensiVe
slogans.
The Peronistas shouted: "Death to the Jews! • Viva Peron."
Mr. Newman's report, charges that police stood by and per-
mitted the rioting to go on. Some of the police aided the bands.
Lock Themselves in Their Homes
Jews were compelled to lock themielves in their homes and
their commercial activities were paralyzed.
As the streets were deserted, the Peronistas shouted: "Jews,
come out and fight!" A number of incidents • weit provoked, forc-
ing some Jews to fight in self-defense. When a gang attacked the
Paso St. synagogue, young Jews intercepted the Peronistas, engaged
them in a fist fight and dispersed them.
When another group of boys entered the.basement.of the syna-
gogue and .prepared.to defend it, • police broke into the house of
worship and arrested 20 of the defenders.
Youths Prepared to Defend Synagogue
Groups of youths also prepared to defend the synagogue on
Libertad St., but this house of worship was spared. The Young"
Men's and Young Women's Association building • was prepared for
an attack but none occurred.
.
Jewish boys broke up a band that tried to stone the
Yiddish newspaper El Diario Israelita which was closed
under the military regime of Ramirez and was reopened
after a vigorous denunciation by President Roosevelt.
Slogans reading "Death to Jews!" and "Kill a Jew and be a
patriot" are to be found on many buildings.
Anti-Jewish incidents occurred in Plaza de. Mayo, Avellaneda
and other sections.
Increasingly worse • attacks are feared by the Jewish com-
munity of Buenos Aires.
