MUCH DO WE UNDERSTAND?
Your Commentator wonders:
How many people, among those wilt)
beard the report and those who read it
in print, were moved by Dr. James G.
Heller's statement that the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee's available funds for re-
lief work in Europe for 1945 were Com-
pletely exhausted before Oct. 1?
At least $18,000,000 is needed immed-
iately to care for the needs of the trag-
ically-afflicted people in Europe—in ad-
dition to the funds included in budgets
of 1,600 communities throughout the
land.
Where will this money come from?
- How can we pbssibly fulfill our ob-
ligations to the survivors from Nazism,
by providing all the funds that are nect.:
essary for the siaggering needs of our
people?
The need is so great that it is almost
frightening.
Yet, we -dare not become either dis-
couraged. or frightened.
This is a period thattalls .for courage
not only in fighting for our rights
through political channels, but alSo
ternally, in our midst, in -arousing the
conscience of our people to the needs • of
our unfortunate kinsmen. .
Because the need is so great, we ac=
eept it as •an* elementary Obligation to
make a success_ of the War chest. Of
major importance—after we have :dis-
charged this obligation—is to think - of
the vast reSponsibilitieS which will be- .
come ours to give twice and three tiines
the amounts we had. given heretofore. •
If we do note give now, to the War.
Chest, and if we , do not prepare to pro
vide immense funds thereafter, our gen
eration be marked. down in history '
as having shamefully failed to under-
stand the' most • eleme.ntatY humanitar-
ian problem. _ .

GREAT BRITAIN'S "CRICKET" • •
The British are known as spOrtstheri:
They, theMselveS, love to Speak of . "fair
play." . ..
"That . is not cricket" is a favorite
phrase of our partnerS in the Palestinian
enterprise every time some one pleyS a
dirty trick. " -
Now, it is OUR turn to ask our part-
ners: What- IS _cricket?
More then a million Jews, Hitler's
first victims; the vanguard. even .for • the
brave British in the fight again,it Naz-
ism, are desperately in need of hotnes.
Half of them MUST go somewhere. • They:-
are knocking with bleeding Bands at
the gates of Palestine—the JEWISH
Palestine—the only spot available for
them.
But the British, to whom Palestine
does NOT belong, have raised bayonets
against them, are directing guns at their
hearts, are threatening. to sink ships
which are preparing to take them to
Eretz Israel, the HOMELAND.
Is THIS cricket?• .
-
• It may be painful for the British to
bear this question. But they will have_
to answer—to US and to the conscience
of mankind.
A handful of the unfortunate sur-
vivors from Nazism had fit to "steal
into Palestine, and they landed at Kfar
Giladi, a colony of brave Jewish men
and women who defied the elements,
the antagon!sm of the British, the mis-
understanding of the Arabs whose liat
red is British-created—to build - a great '
settlethent for Jews. And brave British'
soldiers saw fit to shoot at defenseless
Kfar Giladi settlers-200 British sold-
iers against 30 "-Jewish: 'colonists-=siinply
because these colonists did the human
thing: they welcomed' -70 helpless then,
women and children.
Is THIS cricket?
Ah, Britannia, think not that history:
is blind 'to injustice! '
A few days ago,. in • a discouraged
mood, we told a Christian friend, a mem-
ber of the American Palestine Commit-
tee, • that things are against .us, that we
have too many enemies not only in Lon-
don and Jerusalem—in British chan-
celleries—but also in Washington. And
he replied--HE, the Christian—"WE
will win in the end!"
Remember this, John Bull: Christians
and Jews unite in saying: WE will win
in the end!
Beware, Britannia!
WE will win in the end!
BRITISH INVITE .DISFAVOR
The British ought to beware on many
eotints.
Talk to any veteran in overseas service
who had occasion to deal, with the British,
and he'll tell you that the GIs are not
enamoured with Btitish
Perhaps it is because the arrogant Brit-
ish leaders have tried to deal with the
GIs as they are dealing with the Jews,
as they have• dealt with the peoPle of
India.

How a Handsome, Blond, Nordic-Looking Chap Was Saved From
Detection; Helped With UJA Funds Provided by War Chest

A handsome young man, blond and Nordic in appearance, strode down
the gangplank of the S. S. Mataroa and stepped on the soil of Eretz.
But for his fair hair and "Aryan" features, he might have been among the
victims of the Nazi gas-chambers and crematories—for he had fought in the
revolt of the Warsaw Ghetto.

He was among 1,164 immigrants who had survived years of persecution
at the hands of the Nazis in. Europe and who arrived in Palestine last month
with the aid of the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and
Palestine. Like the others he had witnessed the murder and torture of his
dear ones; but he was the only passenger on the transport who had lived
through the Warsaw Ghetto revolt—through the heroic battle in which Jewish
men and women hurled themselves against the armed might of the Nazi
oppressor.
After the liquidation of the Ghetto, his appearance saved him from
detection. He was deported to Germany as a slave laborer. Finally, with the
advance of the British troops, 'he was liberated, and after V-E Day, he made
-his way to Palestine.
In the Jewish National Home, with the aid of the United Palestine
Appeal, he is being trained for a. new life in one of the agricultural settle-
ments-• established - by the, Keren Hayesod on Jewish National Fund Land.
His sorrow has found surcease and his dreams fulfillment through -the aid
which American Jews made available through the United Jewish Appeal.
The upbuilding of Palestine as the homeland for great numbers of the
:Jewish survivors of Europe is supported by the United Palestine Appeal with
ftiiids raised by the United Jewish Appeal.
Detroit's War Chest finances all USA activities. To assure the -continuation
of these humanitarian efforts, it is imperative that all join in making a
success of the War Chest campaign.

CONVERSATION
The Freeland League's Dr. Steinberg
approached violinist Mischa Elman to so-
licit his support in behalf of the Freeland
League's pet project, Jewish colonization
in Australia. Elman asked whether any
Jews have been settled to date in Kim-
berley: Dr. Steinberg conceded that there
were none. He further asked whether the
Australian government has given its con-
sent; and again Dr. Steinberg had to re-
ply*in the negative. Then their converse,
tion veered to. Palestine. Dr. Steinberg,
disclaiming anti-Zionism, pointed- out,
nevertheless, that Palestine was .a grave
problem, to which Elman replied: "The
fact that the Zionists have succeeded in
converting Palestine into an international
problem within 25 years, would warrant
my support for. the Zionists even if they
had accomplished nothing else. I believe
in supporting realities. Palestine is a
reality."

We recommend, when You visit New

some of them made curious blunders in
reporting the performance. Bhinders in-

APROPOS
Apropos recent utterances and actions
by his son, Lessing - Rosenwald, the fol-
lowing story- about the late Julius Rosen-
wald, who established funds , for Negro
causes, is in. order. One Pullman porter
once boasted to another: "I've got Julius
Rosenwald in my car, I expect a big tip
from him." "You'll find," said the other
porter;. "that he is more for the race than
for the individual."

ZIONIST TRENDS

The details of the talks between Dr.
Weizmann and Secretary of State Byrnes
are known to Zionist leaderS in this
country . . . And so are the details of
the talk which Dr. Weizmann had. with
Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin . .
Byrnes was impressed with the absorp-
tive possibilities of Palestine after Dr.
Weizmann discussed with him' the Low-
der-milk project and other similar de-
velopment plans . , . Dr. Weiirnann indi-
cated to Byrnes that the Zionisti would
expect financial aid from :the . United
States Government - in reali7ing these
plans . . . Weizmann also 'indicated to
Byrnes that the Jews do not :believe that
American troops will be needed to main-
tain order there.

LONDON ECHOES

Jewish Agency leaders are confused
over the reported British demand ';that
America share responsibility. with re-
gard to Palestine . . • They have not yet
established whether Britain wants the
United States to share in the decisions
with regard to Palestine, or in the admin-
istration of Palestine, or in furnishing
economic assistance to Palestine . . . It
is also not clear whether . Britain, intend-
ing to place the Palestine question before
the United Nations Council, will suggest
an international trusteeship for Palestine,
or will demand a free and independent
administration of the country suitable to
England's interests . This lack of clari-
ty is hindering the leaders of the Jewish
Agency in shaping a clear-cut policy .. •
They, therefore, are concentrating on: the
basic demands that Palestine be estab-
lished as a Jewish State and that 100,000
Jews be adthitted to Palestine now ..
The general feeling among Zionist lead-
ers in England is that the British Govern-
ment wants to utilize President Truman's
expressed interest in the Palestine ques-
tion in connection with wider aspects of
its policy in the Middle East . All indi-
cations point to the fact that Britain•,may
endeavor to use the Palestine i s sue, as a
basis for negotiations for " en Anglo-
American treaty regarding the whole
Middle East . . The threats of outbteaks
made by' the ruler of Saudi-Arabia'
other Arab countries, in case Palestine is
re-opened to Jewish immigration, are
considered in London to be mere phrases.

From Refugee
To Army Nurse

.

Two letters, written three years apart,
reveal a typical story how the NRS
Employment and Retraining Department
makes it possible for refugees to serve
America in war.
When Miss S. was refused - admission
to several New York hospitals in 1941,
she sought retraining advice. Told that
she is not debarred because she is an
alien, she was encouraged to try again
aftet an interview was arranged for her.
Subsequently, she took her entrance
test and was accepted.
- In •writing a letter of appreciation,
she said: "The most wonderful thing has
happened to me. I am actually in a
hospital and about to' become a -nurse.
You gaVe me new hope. It will be three
years before I reach my goal; biit I
know that I am' on my waY. Thank
you for everything."
Finishing her course the first of the
year, Miss S. again advised the Retrain-
ing Department of her progress. "I am
writing you this letter in order to let
you know that I- finished my course in
nursing.' Immediately after that I made
my application for the Army Nurse
Corps and was inducted On February 1,
1945. At present, I am stationed in Ma-
son General Hospital, in - Long Island,
New York. I am enjoying my work very
much.. Thank you again for the - help you
have given me."
Thus; the National Refugee _Service,
whose refugee adjustment program is
Carried on with funds raised through the
United' Jewish Appeal, made it possible
for this young refugee to do her part for
Allied victory. • •
The UJA derives its Detroit 'income

Rescue and relief work • in :Europe

and rehabilitation and nation-building
in Palestine through the United Palestine
Appeal are the other two major objectives
of the United Jewish Appeal:
'These agencies, together with 50 more
