Refugee Soldier Back in Germany
Learns Sad Fate of His Family

NEW YORK—In recent months
the newspapers have reported
many stories of refugees from
Nazism who returned to Europe

PFC. WALTER MIELZINER

as U. S. soldiers and found their
families, who had survived perse-
cution, deportation, and massacre.
This, too, is a story about a young
refugee in the American army,
Pfc. Walter Mielziner.
His story was reported in the
Scarsdale Inquirer, published at
Scarsdale, N. Y., Mielziner's
adopted home town. Walter was
15 when- his family in Leipzig,

Ensign Mandeberg
Missing in Action

But Hope Is Kept That He
Will Be Found; Was on Tokyo
Mission Day After V-J Day

Ensign Eugene Esmand Mande-
berg, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Nathan Mandeberg of 18472
Monica, reported missing since
the day after V-J Day, remains
unheard from.

A Navy carrier-based fighter
pilot, Ensign Mandeberg and six
other pilots encountered 20 Jap
planes over Tokyo. Four of the
planes returned.

Germany, sent him out of the
country. Through the efforts of
the European Jewish Children's
Aid, an affiliate of the National
Refugee Service, he was. brought
to the U. S. and found a home
with Dr. and Mrs. Harold D.
Fish, in Scarsdale.
When the war came Walter
entered the army, and took part
in the invasion of Europe with
the Seventh Army. When the di-
vision reached Bad Homburg,
Germany, he received leave to
visit Leipzig and seek his family.
"I left Bad Homburg in a jeep
with driver, gas, rations, and
seven days leave," Pfc. Meilziner
wrote. ,
"I looked for my mother's sis-
ter without success; found that
my father's mother died en route
to a concentration camp.
"I found that my family was
sent to the concentration camp
Belsice, near Lublin, Poland, on
May 8, 1942, in a transport of 200
people-, of which only two re-
turned. I met the survivors, a
man in his fifties and a girl of
20, both of whom remembered
my family. They knew that
father died of starvation at Bel-
sice, and that the rest of the
family was shoved off to Maid-
anek, where millions were gassed.
