80,000 Parade in Tel Aviv
To Protest Britain's Policy
ayor Rokach Warns That 'We Will Not Allow Yishuv to
Become Another Ghetto`; Chief Ra66i Addresses
Appeal to Government; Several Jews Arrested
Special Wire to The Jewish News
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Several Jews were arrested Mon-
day during the general strike called to protest Britain's
closing of the doors of Palestine to Jewish immigration.
In Tel Aviv 70,000 to 80,000 persons paraded carrying
lags and banners declaring: "We will fight to the last Jew
gainst the White Paper."
Mayor Israel Rokach, address-&
ng a huge mass meeting, warned "Cromwell and the British Par-
ritain that "we will not allow
the Yishuv to be converted into a
hetto, which would end in the
ame fashion as the Warsaw
hetto."
Although the Jews have been
reakened by their sacrifices dur-
ng the war, Mayor Rokach con-
inued, "they will • break the
trangling tie now being thrown
round • them with the help of
ayonets."
Rabbi Herzog. Pleads
Several thousand Jews crowded
theater in Jerusalem to hear
hief Rabbi Herzog appeal to the
ritish Government, in behalf of
he Palestine Rabbinate, to open
he doors of Palestine "for the
urvivors of the Nazi inferno." .
Bernard Joseph, acting head of
he political department of the
ewish Agency, addressing the
ame gathering, warned that Jew-
h immigrants will enter Pales-
me by all means at their power
f Britain does not abolish the
hite Paper.
The resolutions . adopted at• the
arious meetings emphasized that
he JeWs in Palestine will not
tand by and allow the country to
e closed to the surviving Jews
f Europe.
Traffic Disrupted
Traffic ' was partly disrupted
hroughout the country as a re-
ult of the strike and Jewish
tore and offices were closed. To
uard against incidents, military
uthorities declared all cities out
f bounds for the day for soldiers
n leave.
BritiSh armored cars patrolled
11 Jewish-populated cities and
he protest meetings were held.
nder close surveillance by Brit-
sh. police units.
The Arab people were assured
f friendship by Jewish spokes-
en who addressed the mass-
neetings. Rabbi Herzog said that
hey would have "faithful friends
nd brothers within a Jewish
ommonwealth." He emphasized
at "all the talk of Jewish ag-
reSsive intentions towards their
rab neighbors • are a myth,
ostered by trouble-makers." At
he same time he called for calm
nd unity among the. Jews in
alestine.•
Recall Ancient Appeal
"Well nigh over 300 years
ago," said the petition from the
Rabbinate read by Rabbi Herzog,.
liament were moved by Menasse
Ben Israel to open the doors of
England to the Jews on the plea
that their readmission was neces-
sary as a preparatory stage: for
the ultimate restoration of Israel
in its fatherland."
"Today," the petition continued,
"we voice the petition of the
broken and down trodden . Jew-
ish nation to the great British
nation to open the gates of the
Holy Land for the survivors of
the Nazi inferno and to save the
ancient race which has given
faith and - hope to the civilized
world and which is itself now in
the uttermost depths of despair.
Tragically Fulfilled
"The words of the famous Scot-
tish Bard, 'Birds . have their nests,
'foxes their caves, Israel has but.
a grave,' have been tragically ful-
filled during the past two years
of extermination of a third of the
Jewish people with 'cruelty too
horrifying • for the 'human mind
to contemplate." .
The Jewish National Council .
after careful investigation of the
Kfar Giladi incident, .challenged
the police communique which
said Jews from a neighboring
colony . fired two shots causing
Transjordan frontier force unit to
reply. The - established TJFF
had 200 men while only 30 _,Jews
were involved. Two settlers were
shot in the back while lying on
the ground. Fire ordered by an
Arab lieutenant was *halted by
a British Major who rushed to
the when he heard the shots.
