• Page Eight THE JEWISH NEWS FricIriy, September 28, 1945 Zionists Mobilize ii Appeal to Truman on Palestine rge Presi ent to Exert Influence Upon Stirred to action by the threats to the future of the Tewislz National Home in Palestine in the annduncement that the British Labor Government had refused to ab- rogate the White Paper, local organizations were mobilized here this week to appeal to President Truman that he should exert his influence upon Great Britain to secure the immediate opening of Palestine's doors to free Jewish immigration. At a meeting of 150 Zionist and other local leaders, held on Monday evening at the Shaarey Zedek under the auspices of the Zionist Council of Detroit, com- mittees were formed to secure immediate action on the part of Detroit JeWs in sending telegrams and letters to President Truman urging that he should carry on his efforts, which he began last week with his letter to the British Government in support of the Jewish Agency program for the immediate admission of 100,000 Euro- pean Jews into Palestine. President Truman's appeal is believed to have had strong effect in England, with the result that it is now believed that the Labor Government has stated that its continuation of the White Paper policy is only temporary and that it will be altered within six months. But the tragic position of European Jewry and the fact, established by Earl G. Harrison,OPresident Tru- man's personal investigator in Europe, and other im- partial observers that at least 60,000 European Jews must be settled in 'Palestine at once, is serving as an incentive to Jews everywhere not to accept the latter report as a deterrent but to continue to make requests to our government that everything that can possibly be done should be put into action immediately to assure speedy abrogation of the White Paper and the opening of Palestine's doors to the surviving Jews. As a result of last Monday's meeting, at which. Benjamin M. Laikin, president of the Zionist Coun- cil, presided, thousands of telegrams already have gone forth to Washington pleading for action by our government. Non-Jews as well as Jews have sent and are continu- ing to send their appeals in behalf of the Jewish cause in Palestine. It is urged that this action should continue and that all Detroit Jews 'should continue sending messages to Washington, addressing them to President Truman. It is reported that family groups, business organiza- tions and societies are participating in this emergency appeal to President Truman. One of the late reports regarding the Palestine situa- tion is to the affect that the British government has de- cided to submit the Palestine question to the United Nations Organization, but many reliable sources refuse to place much stock in this rumor. A Jewish Telegraphic Agency report cabled to The Jewish News from London on Tuesday stated that authoritative .quarters stressed "They don't believe for a moment" in the report by Reuter's Laski Reminds Party Yudkoff to Be Feted Of Palestine Pledge At Center Monday In Collier's Article Harry Yudkoff, former presi- NEW YORK (JPS)—A re- minder of the British Labor Par- ty's pledge to the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine, is contained in a re- cent article in Collier's weekly by Harold Laski, chairman of the Executive Committee of the British Labor Party, whose ut- terances on British policy have brought forth irritable rejoinders from members of the British La- bor Government who have re- peatedly stated that Laski's views are his own and do not bind the Government: Prof, Laski's statement reads: "We share the common pur- pose of helping France to re- cover her status as a great demo- cracy. Act to Prevent "Shameful Injustice" NEW YORK—The Jews of Palestine will "resist to the bitter end" the decision reportedly being taken by the British Government "to continue with slight modi- fications the infamous pOlicy of the Palestine White Paper and to restrict Jewish immigration there to a trickle," Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and Dr. Stephen S. Wise, co-chairmen of the American Zionist Emergency Coun- cil, declared in a joint statement. Dr. Silver and Dr. Wise expressed a "solemrrwarning that such a decision can lead only to a catastrophe," and called on the British people and the U. S. Govern- ment, "which bears a major responsibility in this crisis," to take immediate steps "to prevent a shameful and perhaps irreparable injustice." A mass meeting to give expression to "the sense of apprehension and indignation aroused by this news" will be held at Madison Square Garden on Sunday eve- ning, Sept. 30, to be followed by an Emergency Con- ference of Zionist leaders in Washington, Dr. Silver and Dr. Wise announced. tional Fund to prepare land for masses of the Jewish people. It revealed that despite the British Government's restrictions on land sales to Jews, the JNF suc- ceeded in acquiring during the war about 330,000 dunams, bring- ing its land reserves up to 800,- 000 dunams. The manifesto called for the annulment of the existing land restrictions and for the right to acquire land freely in all parts of Palestine. It also demanded that the gates of Palestine be opened to the surviving Jews of Europe. Dr. Abraham Granovsky, who was re-elected chairman of the board of directors of the JNF while retaining the post of man- aging director, addressed the conference on the diMiculties which the JNF faces in acquiring new land. Palestine Year Book Views Achievements WASHINGTON — The publica- tion of a "Palestine Year Book," containing a survey of events in the Jewish National Homeland and in the Zionist movement in this country and abroad for the past year, was announced this week by Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the ZOA. The volume is edited by Sophie A. Udin, librarian of the Zionist Library and Archives, and com- prises 15 sections embracing all major aspects in the progress re- corded both in the upbiulding of Palestine and in the growth of the Zionist movement. It has a foreword by Dr. Goldstein and an introduction by Judge Louis E. Levinthal, chairman of the pub- lication committee of the Zionist Organization of America. I Ain An American I Am A Jew I Am A Zionist I Am the father of two servicemen—a son who served overseas for two years and fought on the Anzio Beachhead with the 101st Airborne Division and a son-in-law who is now station- ed in Germany. And my heart aches for the suffering survivors from Nazism who have no one to turn to for help, who have no place to go to, for whom the gates of Eretz Israel—the Holy Land of Israel—are being shut tight by men in power who are forgetting the simplest principles of justice. I am sick at heart over the plight of my people. Our sons and daughters have fought on all fronts. We have lost more than a third of our entire world popula- tion, and our fight has been against Nazism—only in the ranks of the United Nations armies. Of the eight million Jews of Europe, only a million and a quarter survive, and these, too, are denied haven in OUR land. I appeal to President Truman to use his influence to prevent a travesty on justice. I plead with our President to do everything he possibly can to secure justice for our people and to urge the British govern- ment to open the doors of Palestine wide so that all Jews who desire may go to Palestine with dignity and with honor. I urge my fellow Americans—Jews and Christians alike—to join with me in my appeal to the President in behalf of the survivors from Nazism. Our government must act—in the name of justice and human- itarian principles. LET US ALL ACT NOW AND WIRE OR WRITE PRESI- DENT TRUMAN—TO PREVENT A TRAVESTY ON JUSTICE.
