Page Two Purely Commentary By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ GAMBLING WITH LIVES Shortly before the cessation of hostili- ties in Europe, the South African Jewish War Appeal published an advertisement in behalf of its drive for funds. This ad- vertisement must be rated as a classic in frank speaking. The conditions in South Africa and in this country being very nearly alike, this advertisement has great merit in con- nection with our own appeals for funds for the tragically-afflicted Jews of Eu- rope. We ask you, therefore, to share the contents of_ this ad with us, It reads as follows: 9 Lost The Lives of Fifty Children At Playing Cards" Can you imagine a Jew gambling away the lives of 50 children in a game a chance? He would have to be a Haman, a Hitler, -a Monstrosity. Yet things as bad are daily happening. Are you wasting money on gambling, on luxuries, while not 50, but 500,000 Jewish children are dyillag? That dress you need not have bought . . . That party you need not have at- tended . . . That trinket that was never required . . . Why did the money not 'go to the U,J.W. SOUTH AFRICAN JEWISH WAR APPEAL (Women's Campaign?) When you sit down to a - meal Think of the Jewish War Appeal Is it possible that any one will assume to say that this challenge is far-fetched? We need not interpret the term "gam- bling" too literally to catch the spirit of the South African message. Suffice it to say - that if we are hard-hearted while we live in luxury, if we are indifferent to the needs of our people; we ARE gam- bling with their destiny. And if we gamble with THEIR future. we imperil our own. . * * * INFLUENCE OF BIGOTRY We would be very blind if we failed to recognize that the influences of bigotry which have their roots in countries steeped in medievalism have had their effect upon our own lives. Anti-Semitic movements would have been much weaker in America and else- where if not for the things that happened in Nazi-dominated lands.. The unending flood of news about the degradations of Jews, especially during the past 12 years, has. given courage to bigots in this country to • emulate the examples of gangsters in Hitler garb. Stories about Jewish sufferings have stirred liberals everywhere to expressions of sympathy, but they have also been re- sponsible for assertions by bigots that "if these things are happening to Jews throughout Europe, there must be cause for it," and their evil minds created evil deeds. While liberals limited their kind-heart- edness to "sympathy," the bigots were at work increasing their evils. . If there is to be, as there MUST be, an end to bigotry and intolerance, one of the steps towards the restoration of decency in the world is the complete and whole- some rehabilitation of the victims of the Nazis and their cohorts. * * * GIVE—AND WORK! This is a long introduction to the point at issue—that every Jew, every one of us, man, woman and child, . must exert himself or herself to secure maximum needs for the reconstruction of the lives of impoverished Israel. A happy Jewish people overseas will be a contributing factor in creating greater happiness here.. By example, a great deal of .good can be accomplished. And at the moment—until the Allied Jewish Campaign becomes an independ- ent fund-raising agency for Jewish causes alone, the War Chest is the only means of providing the major needs for recon- structive and rehabilitative efforts among European Jews. If we do not give liberally to the War Chest and work wholeheartedly for it, we will be gambling not only with the destiny of those that are to be helped with the funds we are to contribute and are to help raise, but we will also be gambling with our own security. THE JEWISH NEWS Behind Enemy Lines The War Chest Provides the Necessary Funds With Which to Rehabilitate Those Who Escaped the Nazi Terror Only a few months before they had escaped from Nazi terror and settled in Palestine with the aid of the United Palestine Appeal, but because they looked like Aryans and spoke German, they volunteered for a dangerous mission on the North African front. Pretending to be Germans taking pris- oners to the divisional headquarters, they actually penetrated enemy lines in an effort to bring badly needed explosives to the Allied Armies. Success almost crowned their efforts when they were exposed by a Nazi soldier. Knowing that their German uniforms were a sentence of death, they determined to take as many Nazis with them as possible. They exploded their bomb loads, killing themselves together with vast numbers of German soldiers. Many thousands of victims of Hitler-, ism who found a new home in Palestine, with the help of the United Palestine Ap- peal, were enabled to make a heroic con- tribution to Allied victory. The funds raised through the United Jewish Appeal will make possible the settlement in the Jewish homeland of the great masses of those who survived the scourge of op- pression and war. Young people like the one in the ac- . • companying photograph are being rehabilitated with funds of the United Jewish Appeal. Continued relief and rehabilitation efforts depend upon the success of the War Chest of Metropolitan Detroit, whose annual drive will be conducted from Oct. 8 to 31. Between You and Me By BORIS SMOLAR (Copyright, 1945, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) POLITICAL NOTES Dr. Chaim Weizmann's visit to the United States in October will be devoted to important negotiations in this country on Palestine's future . . He will try to get the backing of important non-Zionists .. Meanwhile, the tug of war between the American Zionist Emergency Council and the Jewish Agency about who should be the "boss" of Zionist activities in Washington is still going On . . The Council notified the Agency that it must drop its plan to establish a separate press office in Washington . . It also cabled the Agency that political representations vis-a-vis the State Department will have to be conducted by American Zionists ex- clusively . . . On the other hand, the Council agrees that the Agency should conduct activities in Washington in con- nection with Zionist work in Latin Amer- ican countries and rescue work in Europe . . . Also with regard to counter- acting Arab propaganda in the capital. * * * DOMESTIC NOTES We are reliably informed that Dr. Stephen S. Wise wrote Senator Brien Mc- Mahon of Connecticut, asking Senate censure of Bilbo .. . McMahon showed it to Jewish friends • and also his reply pointing out to Wise how dangerous such a procedure might be, inasmuch as the foes of Jews might one day turn the tables and ask censure of Senators who had been espousing the Jewish cause. The anti-Semitic press is now publish- ing protests against the deportation of Nazi agents from the United States . . . Naturally, these protests are full of at- tacks against Jews . . The so-called Citizens' Protective League went so far as to send a petition to , President Truman blaming the Jews for the internment in the United States of a number of Nazi Germans, and protesting against their de- portation . . . Which shows how strong an interest anti-Semitic . groups in this coun- try still have in Nazi stooges . The "Broom," California's anti-Semitic news- - paper, goes out of its way to list the JeWish scientists who played. a leading role in the discovery of the atomic bomb . . Naturally, not as a compliment to Jews ... The anti-Semitic "Gentile News" in Chicago claims that the Anti-De- famation League has 26 lawyers on its New York staff and 32 on its Chicago staff, all engaged in fighting anti-Semi- tism . . . The same paper, which is now publishing the notorious forgery known as the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," also devotes a full page to listing Jewish publications in this country and their al- leged circulation. * * * LITERARY SIDELIGHTS Prof. J. Salwyn Schapiro, one of Amer- ica's outstanding historians, reveals that Thomas Carlyle was an anti-Semite and a prophet of Fascism, in an article pub- lished in Journal of Modern History . . Carlyle rarely mentioned the Jews, but whenever he did so it was always in vin- dictively derogatory terms, says the pro- fessor . . . "Happy Jews" was a typical Carlylan expression of hostility . . . He upheld the savage persecution of Jews during • the Middle Ages Like the Heard in The Lobbies By ARNOLD LEVIN (Copyright, 1945. Independent Jewish Press Service, Inc.) TIP-OFF American sleuths, sifting records. in Germany for evidence establishing direct contacts between the sedition defendants in this country and the Reich, should not lose sight of the Steuben Society of America whose president, Theodore H. Hoffman, was palsy-walsy with the Aus- lands Institut of Stuttgart,. Germany, fountain-head of Nazi propaganda abroad. Is it true what they say about a famous news commentator's Radio City offices (not listed in the phone book, that's how funny the gentleman is!) that they have become the blind for Arab propaganda in the United States? * * • * QUESTION? What is the status, in the eyes of the Palestine government, of American Ha- lutzim who lived in Palestine, enlisted with the British forces as soon as the war broke out, had themselves transferred to the American forces when this country entered the war? Will they be permitted to return to Palestine? We have heard this asked by those now oq furlough in this country. They will certainly demand to be readmitted, but then British policy being what it is .. . * * * NEW YORK CITY ELECTION NOTE Don't get upset by the possible turn of New York City's elections. All candidates promise not to raise the racial issue, but then, somehow, it slips in—via ward- heelers. Don't blame the candidates. It is just the way of politics. * * INTERESTING This from the pen of Cornelius Van- derbilt, who has very good reportorial pipelines, should make the nation's ears and hair stand up: "A certain high State Department official is blocking the pub- lication of Hitler's private papers, notes, items, memoranda, because of mention therein of Nazi transactions with certain powerful American industrialists . ." * * * RED LIGHT Shouldn't Zionists parse and sift the dispatches by Reuter's. British news agency which is concentrating, of late, on Palestine news? The Jewish press, prom- inently featuring this news, should bear in mind that news dispatches frequently have aims other than informing the public. Nazis of today, Carlyle was convinced that the Jews were uncreative exploiters, incapable of any heroism .. . Whenever Carlyle saw a Jewish head appear on the literary or political horizon, he promptly smote it . . . He denounced Heinrich Heine as a "slimy and greasy Jew" . . He detested Disraeli, the only man of whom, he said, he had "never spoken ex- cept with contempt" . > . He ridiculed him as "a cursed Jew not worth his weight in bacon" . . . His anti-Semitism extended even to religion . On the other hand he did much to spread admiration for Ger- mans among the English . . This explains Carlyle's popularity in Nazi Germany . Some of his books were made compulsory reading in Nazi schools. . Friday, September 28, 1945 Strictly Confidential By PHINEAS J. BIRON Copyright, 1945, Seven Arts Features Syndicate, Inc. ANTI-SEMITIC FRONT The Hollywood Council for Civic Unity has a swell blue print for action . . . We hope it will not countenance appease- ment and expose anti-Semitism,,now ram- pant in Hollywood . . . The council would do well to put a stop—if possible—to the regular meetings addressed by G. Allison Phelps and Lowell . . . Both are enthusi- astic followers of Gerald L. K. Smith. That proposed debate between Senator Bilbo and James Waterman Wise on "Does America Want Racial Equality"' is a ridiculous idea .. . Victor Riesel reports that aging, grey- ing Father Coughlin is eager to broad- cast again and awaits the results of a new petition drive, directed by Gerald L. K. Smith. Why did the New York press ignore the vandalism committed in the store of Sidney Ross . . . Sid's store windows and door were smeared with the Star of David and anti-Semitic slogans. "A World Charter for Human Rights" is the name of a new pamphlet issued by the American Jewish Committee . . . The booklet hails the inclusion of human rights provisions in the charter of the new World Organization as a great achievement. * * * ABOUT PERSONS Eddie Sullivan reminds the Bilboites that Jewish heroes won 31 D.S.C.'s and thousands of other U. S. decorations . . We also lost six Jewish chaplains. Jascha Heifetz cancelled more than $100,000 worth of concerts to entertain GIs in France and Germany. Arthur Rubinstein, the pianist, asked and got $85,000 for recording the piano music in the forthcoming film "Concerto". William Paley, president of Columbia Broadcasting, is back from Europe where he performed one of the most successful war jobs as head of the Psychological Warfare Division. Now, reliable information reaches us that former Governor Lehman will be drafted to run for the Senate in 1946. * * * YOU SHOULD KNOW Liberal Judaism scored a real scoop when it published in its current issue the article about Eddie Jacobson's friendship with President Truman . . . The article gives a very human portrait of the President . . . Truman was terribly pleased and wrote accordingly to Editor Rittenberg. Henry Morgenthau's book on how to cure Germany of Nazism will be pub- lished next month and is enjoying a ter- rific advance sale. Judge Sam Rosenman may—after all— stay in Washington as Truman's No. 1 adviser on foreign relief, all loans, and credit to foreign governments. Your favorite Hollywood columnist, Sidney Skolsky, will become a movie pro- ducer for Columbia pictures. Is it true that a certain high State De- partment official is blocking the publica- tion of Hitler's private papers, notes, and memoranda because of mention therein of Nazi transactions with certain powerful American industrialists? Eddie Bernays, public relations counsel, has made so much money that he will de- vote himself to peace propaganda for the rest of his life. The Page 1 Photo This week's front page photograph, which The Jewish News uses in the interests of the War Chest campaign, through the courtesy of the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Over- seas Needs and Palestine, was taken in Italy by Sgt. Maurice Man- son. It was passed for our use by the Field Press Censor. Taken in Italy, the photographer appended to it a note that the Italians who had seen it remarked that, although it represents the homelessness of Jew- ish children in Europe, they can also say of it: "La Nostra Povera Italia"— "Our Poor Italy." The original pic- ture was enlarged and retouched for use in The Jewish News by Paul Broner, able Detroit photographer. We are reproducing it in the fullest confidence that it will inspire great effort in behalf of the humanitarian causes of the War Chest, whose goal includes the 55 overseas, national and local causes of • the Allied Jewish Campaign of the*. Jewish Welfare Federation.
