Left, a Sephardic "sofer" (scribe) in Palestine carries on the traditions of his forefateffers as he patiently inscribes the Pentateuch onto parchment, fash- ioning a new Sefer Torah for his co-religionists in Europe. J.D.C. supports many such ,scribes in Jerusalem, shipping the _Torahs they produce to Jewish communities in Europe as quickly as pos- sible. Right, a view of a once beautiful syna- gogue in Romania demolished by the Germans. Every day J.D.C. reetives appeals from Jewish communities in scattered parts of the continent requesting Sifrei Torah, Tfillin, prayer books and other religious articles. Fifty-five Torahs Were sent by J.D.C. to the Jews in Europe in time for the High Holyday services but an additional 500 Scrolls are urgently needed. Synagogues, rabbis and individuals have been urged by J.D.C. to contribute extra Sifrei Torah not needed for services—to the J.D.C. Cultural Committee. Interrogated by American officers, they 'tried to pass themselves off as German Jews desiring to return to Mun- ich. But their faulty German gave them away. Whereupon, an American general ordered the return of the entire transport to Poland-. The next' morning, the camp was surrounded by American troops armed with machine guns, in a manner made - familiar by the Gestapo. The soldiers drove the resisting Jews from the huts, using the butts of their rifles against women and, ehildren. They were aided by Germans, Poles, Hungarians, and Ukrain- ians so that there were three to four men to every Jew. - The victims were rounded up and thrown into , trucks and mercilessly beaten. Protests against the Americans allowing Germans to beat Jews were ignored. The Jews were driven to the railway station and loaded into sealed trains. Some of them who escaped into the woods were fired upon by pursuing troops, A 54-year-old woman, Rachel Kleinmann, who was among two families captured, suffered a heart attack. One of the refu- gees, a doctor, pleaded that he be sent back to the reception camp, but his appeal was rejected.
