Most Community Fund agen-
cies are not supported entirely
by the Fund. Most receive money
from other sources in the form
of dues, fees and
the l i ke. The
C o mmunity
Fund makes up
the agency's op-
erating deficit. It
assures the con-
tinuation of the
services for ev-
eryone and it
makes possible
the services for those who can
assume only part or none of the
cost of the service.
Send Relief to Allies
Thirty-six and two-tenths per
cent of the Community War
Chest campaign goal of $8,490,336
is scheduled to go to National
War Fund agencies. These are
the agencies which send relief
supplies to our allies and which
provide USO services for our
men and women in uniform.
Budgets for these agencies are
prepared on a national scale and
each state is given a just share
of the national goal to make up.
Michigan's share has been set at
$5,454,392. Of this amount the
Metropolitan Detroit area is be-
ing asked to raise $3,073,479.
13.3 Pct. for Jewish Campaign
The local USO will receive an
allocation of $200,000 from the
War Chest this year in addition
to the amount it receives from
the National War Fund through
the National USO.
For its national and overseas
services as well as its local
agencies, the Allied Jewish
Campaign will receive 13.3 per
cent of the $8,490,336 goal. This
agency is the central body for
55 Jewish Welfare Federation
agencies, at home and abroad
which serve in the fields of re-
lief, social welfare, education
and reconstruction. Thousands
of Jews in Europe are "state-
less people," the victims of
Hitler's most cruel mental and
physical tortures, many of them
are completely destitute de-
pending entirely upon Ameri-
can assistance. Their plight
will be reduced with War Chest
funds for the United Jewish
Appeal which includes the
Joint Distribution Committee,
United Palestine Appeal and
National Refugee Service.
Local war-related services re-
ceive $138,000 or 1.7 per cent of
the goal. The remaining 3.9 per
Cent covers campaign costs and
year round expenses.

532 Synagogues Destroyed
In Russia By Germans
MOSCOW (JTA)—Five hun-
dred and thirty-two synagogues
were destroyed by the Germans
in Russia, according to a report
by the State Commission to In-

vestigate German Crimes.

Dr. Pekelis declared that the
work of this committee is to at-
tain equal rights for all and at
the same time to maintain Jewish
individuality — a task which he
described as difficult.
He emphasized that Jews must
align themselves with every pro-
gressive and liberal idea and
action because the barometer of
Jewish standing is the justice and
decency of the community. He
deplored the indifference of so
many Jews to the tragedy of
Jewish life in the world today.
Dr. Pekelis was guest speaker
at the first of a series of monthly
membership meetings to be in-
augurated by the Detroit Section
of the American Jewish Congress,
Mrs. Esther Mendelson, program
chairman, announced.

Former U. S. Attorney general
FRANCIS X. BIDDLE of Phila-
delphia has been appointed by
President Truman to be the
American judge on the Inter-
national Court who will conduct
the war criminal trials in Europe.

PRAGUE, (JTA)—Thousands of Jews in Poland, threatened
with death if they do not leave the country immediately, are con-
tinuing to move in carts and on foot to the American-held zone in
Germany, it was reported here this week.
Many of the fugitives have succeeded in reaching Munich, but
others are prevented from continuing their "march" in that direc-
tion. Some groups therefore, are seeking to reach Vienna, the
report says.
Non-Jewish inhabitants of Poland arriving here this week
confirmed that the anti-Jewish terrorist movement in various sec-
tions of the country is not growing weaker, but is becoming stronger
and has thrown the Jews into a panic. The terrorist activities
are centered mainly in Radom and in Cracow where the majority
of the surviving Polish Jews reside.
"Leaflets are being distributed in these two cities warning the
Jews that they will be killed if they do not leave the country,"
one of the arrivals stated. "That these are not idle threats is in-
dicated by the fact that up to now 120 Jews have been killed in
Cracow and four in Radom. Only the presence of Red Army units
prevents the killing of Jews in other cities."

Mrs. Welt Urges
Truman to Send
Food to Europe

NEW YORK—Declaring that
America must assume its "res-
ponsibility toward providing Eu-
rope with necessary food, al-
though knowing full well that
it would mean prolongation of
rationing at home," Mrs. Joseph
M. Welt of Detroit, president of
the National Council of Jewish
Women, urged President Truman,
in a letter, to "allocate enough
food during this fourth quarter
to relieve the present emergency
abroad."
Pointing out that "we Ameri-
cans are eating incomparably
better than the people in Eu-
rope," the letter urged that ra-
tioning of "foods needs for re-
lief be continued where neces-
sary to provide for overseas ship-
ments."
