Religious Fund Combine
for Yom Kippur Appeals

Many disturbing rumors have been circulating in
the community about alleged anti-Jewish occurrences
in Detroit. The Jewish Community Council acted im-
mediately and vigorously as sdon as the first rumors
and reports reached the administration. All prevent-
ive measures were taken without delay. The complete
cooperation of various non-Jewish elements was imme-
diately enlisted. The municipal authorities are on the
alert maintaining law and order, and the Community
Council has given them every assistance possible.
There is every reason to be confident that the sit-
uation, while it required the strong action which the
Community Council took, does not warrant any alarm
or panic. All reports have been thoroughly investigat-
ed and traced to their original sources. Thus the organ-
ized Jewish community was able to act on the basis
of FACTS, and not on the basis of rumors and allega-
tions.
The rumors are grossly exaggerated. If they are
not stopped, they may cause undue and dangerous
alarm and even hysteria. All responsible individuals
and organizations in the Jewish community can help
by vigorously discouraging rumors, "by preventing ir-
responsible acts, and by communicating with the Com-
munity Council office to obtain accurate, reliable in-
formation.
A full report on the situation, and on the Communi-
ty Council's action with respect to it, will be presented
to an early meeting of Community Council delegates.

Servicemen Swell
Young Israel Ranks

Ranks of Detroit Young Israel
are being swelled daily with
applications for membership coin-
ing in the mails from servicemen
and women stationed all over
the world, it was announced by
Charles T. Gellman, Young Israel
president.

Applications for free member-
ship are coming in response to a
letter sent to Detroit Jewish
members of the armed forces by
Mr. Gellman. Membership will
become valid as soon as they
return to civilian life.

Applications also are being ac-
cepted from discharged veterans
who received similar letters.

Many servicemen in filing
membership applications ex-
pressed - their gratitude for the
contact Young Israel had kept
with them. Many revealed a re-
newed interest in religious ideals
and a thirst for knowledge of
Jewish traditions, customs and
history.

At a conference of synagogue
presidents held Thursday in
Shaarey Zedek a merger was ef-
fected between the Detroit ap-
peals for the Vaad Hatzala Emer-
gency committee and the Ameri-
can Religious Palestine Fund for
the solicitation of pledges among
worshipers on the Day of Atone-
ment in local congregations.
The agreement was negotiated
by Isaac Meyer Lewin, repre-
senting the Agudath Israel col-
onization and child rescue ef-
forts in the Holy Land, and
Rabbi Eliezer Rabinowitz of
Vaad Hatzala headquarters in
New York, both of whom are
visiting here, for the purpose of
avoiding duplication and con-
flict.
Called by Synagogues
The meeting was convened
by the heads of four synago-
gues in the city: William Sand-
ler, president, Cong. Beth Tfilo
Emmanuel; Joseph A. Block,
Bnai David; Harry Rosman, Bnai

for all 40 houses oi worship and

Start Hatzala Drive
The sixth annual Detroit drive
for Vaad Hahatzalah was initiat-
ed during the High Holy Day sea- -
son. Ever since the outbreak of
World War II, a local commit-
tee, originated by rabbis and of-
ficers of local congregations has
been pctive in securing the par-
ticipation of Detroit Jews in this
national movement. Beginning
as an agency for war-torn Yesh-
ivoth, the American Vaad Haha-
tzalah expanded its activities to
include aid for scholars, religi-
ous leaders, and subsequently all
groups of Jews who could be
saved in the war zone. In 1945,
the Detroit committee for Vaad
Hahatzalah raised close to $70,-
000 for rescue, relief, and rehab-
ilitation purposes.
