CINCINNATI—Reform Juda-
ism, in its organized identity,
according to Alfred Segal, chair-
man of Hebrew Union College's
70th Anniversary Observance
Committee, is coming to a state-
ly _birthday in October and this
city, its cradle, is making quite
an affair of it. The matter is to
be sacredly observed, too, in
every city and town in the
country in which a Reform 'tem-
ple is served by an alumnus of
the Hebrew Union College.
Hebrew Union College will
be 70 years old on Oct. 3 and
looking back to the beginning
you may say it has made a great
life of it.
Today's Jewish Life
"It has concerned itself with
today's Jewish life," Segal de-
clares, "particularly American
Jewish life, to make it effective
and respected in the American
scene. Some 350 temples are be-
ing served by HUC rabbis. They
serve the Jewish name and with
men of ther faiths go to serve
the • common life as well.
"It's all in line with the teach-
ing of old Dr. Isaac Mayer Wise
who came here. from Bohemia
100 years ago and preached a
Judaism liberated from ghettoes
self-made and ghettoes imposed,
by enemies. It was called Re-
form Judaism but nowadays it
is more often spoken of as lib-
eral and progressive Judaism.

Revised Services
"Dr. Wise came to the Con-
gregation B'nei Jeshurun in Cin-
cinnati. He revised the service,
excising from it those portions
that could have no meaning to
a 19th Century Jew, such as
references to burnt offerings. He
established t h e equality of
women in his temple. He
preached prophetic Judaism.
"His preaching was taken up
in congregations in the larger
cities and in 1873 Dr. Wise or-
ganized the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations.
"In 1875 Dr. Wise founded in
Cincinnati, under the auspices
of the Union of American He-
brew Congregations, the Hebrew .
Union College to train Ameri-
can Jewish youth for the rab-
binate."
