Slay 128 Jews
In City of Lodz
A note .of sadness marred the opening of the
year 5706, when reports were received from Geneva
that the wave of terrorism against the Jews in
Poland is spreading.
In Lodz alone, reports from reliable sources re-
veal, 128 Jews were slain during the month of July.
In the small towns of Poland, where there are only
few Jewish survivors, the situation is even worse, the re-
port dislosed. Many Jews who only recently returned to
their home towns are reported fleeing pen well" in the
hope of finding shelter.

Terrorists Rounding Alp Jews
Bands of organized terrorists, often stronger than
the local -police authorities, are rounding up Jews, ter-
rorizing them, beating them and stealing their. property.
In some towns the terrorists were reported to have issued
ultimatums to the Jewish residents, warning them that
unless they leave they would be • killed.
In several towns the terrorists are reported to have
slain the surviving Jews who failed to heed the warning.
In Radom, a comparatively large city, the Polish
*terrorists posted notices that unless the Jews leave • the
city within 24 hours they would wipe out the entire
Jewish population. Most Jews took the warning at its
value and fled..
The plight of the Jews throughout Poland, the re-
port states, is. desperate. Jews are afraid to speak
Yiddish in public for fear of being attacked by the ter-
rorists. Many Jews, particularly women, are using
spurious documents to conceal their identity, as was the
case during the Hitler regime.
Jewish returnees who lingered in concentration
camps before Poland's liberation, have made it clear that
if the doors of ,Palestine were open to the Jewish popula-
tion all of Polish Jewry would trek to the Holy Land.

Refugees Return To Munich
Recently there arrived in Poland a group of 720 Jew-
ish men, women and children who were liberated from
a concentration camp. When they heard what was hap-
pening in Poland they hid in woods and forests instead
of returning to their former homes. After two weeks of
hiding they returned to Munich,- where they related
that the Jews in Poland are facing the same dangers as
in the days of Hitler.
Most of the Polish Jews who fled the wave of ter-
rorism are hoping to reach the American and British
occupation zones.
Nor is the situation of the Jews in Lower Silesia
any better. Of 176 Jews who recently returned there
from the Bergen-Belsen camp more than 70 fled back
to the notorious camp. The returnees told newspapermen
in Bergen-Belsen camp that they were forced to return
because of the wave of anti-Semitism in Poland.
5,700,000 Jews Slain In Europe
NEW YORK (JPS)—Based upon statistics gathered
from all available sources on the number of Jewish civ-
ilian casualties during Axis domination in Europe, the
Institute of Jewish Affairs, research affiliate of the
World Jewish Congress and the American Jewish Con-
gress, concludes that the actual number may be "very
conservatively" estimated at 5,700,000, or 60 percent of
the total Jewish population in Europe when the war
began.
In Russia the Jews fared a little better than else-
where, the report indicates, for if Russia is excluded
from the count the percentage of Jews killed or missing
would reach 68 percent.
