Ex-Commissioner Favors
Jewish State, by Partition

Sir John Chancellor Praises London Times for Editorial
Calling for Division of Holy Land into Separate
States 'to End Disturbances'

LONDON (JPS-Palcor) — Congratulating the London
Times on its recent editorial calling for a partition of Pales-
tine into separate Jewish and Arab states, Sir John Chancel-
lor, former Palestine High Commisioner, in a letter to the
Times; declared that the partition policy, recommended by
the Royal Commission, offers the only solution to the

Palestine problem. The altern-4
ative is continual serious dis- i s to counteract the world Zion-
turbances, he 'Said. ist conference recently held in
London.
Sir John writes that:

"While partition will open
serious objections and both sides that King Ibn Saud will visit
will dislike it, there is Male Egypt during the first half of

Regarding financial difficulties
in setting up separate states in
Palestine, the former High Com-
missioner stated that he believes
"the Jewish state can be sup-
ported by large subsidies from
wealthy American Jews and will,
undoubtedly, be self supporting.
The Arab State, on the other
hand, will at least in its early
days, require financial assist-
ance from without."

Stanley Asks Government
Weigh Palestine Action-
LONDON, (JPS)—The British
Labor Government should not
be rushed into a decision regard-
ing Palestine policy, former
Colonial" Secretary Oliver Stan-
ley, declared in Commons. He
said it "required the most care-
ful consideration; as a matter of
fact, before the Labor Party
made its declaration of policy
during the elections, they should
have observed the same caution
their Government is now display-
ing." The previous Government,
he said, was "wise enough to
maintain complete silence on the
matter."
The Palestine question; he con-
ceded, "was fraught with terrible
consequences if no solution were
• found."
Form Pro-Arab Bloc .
A pro-Arab bloc of British
Labor MPs was formed here this
week, following a meeting called
by three Laborite members of
parliament to "acquaint Col-
leagues with the Arab view-
point." Thomas Reid, M. P.
Price and R. R. Stokes, reelected
to Parliament - on the British
Labor Party ticket and long
supporters of Arab as against
Jewish claims to Palestine, con-
vened the meeting whose parti-
cipants were divided in their
views on the Palestine issue.
David Mack, Laborite M.P., a
Jew, stated afterwards that any
Government proposals to admit
additional Jewish immigration
into Palestine are likely to meet
with opposition from some Labor
parliamentarians, but that file
majority would support the de-
clared Labor Party, policy for a
Jewish Commonwealth in Pales-
tine.

Plan World-Wide Arab
Conference on Palestine
BEYRUTH, (JPS-Palcor)—The
Syrian, press reports that there
are plans under way for an
All-Arab conference, with the
participation of representatives of
Arab parties and organization the
world over, to consider the Pal-
estine problem. The purpose of
the conference, the press states,

Evelyn Wrench, a British au-
thoress who just returned from
Palestine, suggests in an . article
in the Times that another 500,000
Jews be permitted to enter Pal-
estine "subject to the absorptive
capacity of the country." She
lauds the Jewish contributions
to the welfare of the country and
urges the establishment of Pal-
estine as a bi-national state as
soon as the Jewish population
equals that of the Arab. Arab-
Jewish parity, she points out, can
then be maintained through a
small annual Jewish immigration
to balance the difference in the
birthrate between Jews and
Arabs.
Muhammad Abbas Ali, presi-
dent of the London section of the
All-India Moslem League, em-
phasizes in an article that the
Moslems in India will back the
Arabs in the Levant. "Why
should Jews be removed from the
European continent?" he asks. "If
this must be done on account of
anti-Semitism, then how can one
expect the Arabs to be above
this feeling?" The solution of the
Jewish. -problem in Europe must
be found by settling Jews in
underpopulated countries such as
Canada and Australia, he says.

Truman Feels British Back
Arabs -Against Jewish' State
W A S HI NGTON, (JPS )—Fol-
lowing his discussion of the Pal-
estine problem with former
Prime Minister Churchill and
Prime Minister Attlee at Pots-
dam, and on the basis of private
advices, it seems to President
Truman that the British are sup-
porting the Arabs in opposing
the establishment of a Jewish

Commonwealth in Palestine, a
source close to the White House
revealed to the Independent
Jewish Press Service.
Thus this source supplemented
what President Truman left un-
said in revealing his talks with
Churchill and Attlee regarding
Palestine—namely: the reaction
of the British.
The President is concerned
with the problem of Jewish
homeslessness, British reluctance
to keep their pledge to the Jews,
and the threat transmitted to
him from the Arabs, probably
through British sources, that there
would be violence in :the Middle
East should a Jewish state be
established _ , the Independent Jew-
ish Press Service informant re-
vealed.
The President, however, does
not claim familiarity with all
the facts in regard to the securi-
ty situation in the Middle East,
the informant stated. It also
appears that the President is
under the impression that large
segments of Jewry are opposed
to Zionism.
This impression of the Presi-
dent's views in major' outline
also - has been obtained by Rep.
Sabath following a White House
conference last week. Sabath
denied the statement attributed
to him in press reports that the
Jews of Europe prefer to remain
in their countries of origin. The
statement is a complete distor-
tion of his views, Mr. Sabath
stated.

Blame Reactionary Elements
Against New Nation for
Anti-Jewish Crimes

LONDON, (JTA)—Severe pen-
alties will be imposed upon all
persons who participated in the
anti-Jewish disturbances in re-
cent weeks in various Polish
towns, it was announced here by
Alfred • Fiederkiewicz, Polish
Charge d'Affaires,
"We are sorry that such things
happened in the new -Poland at
this moment," 'the -statement
continued,. "but we believe that
the anti-Jewish crimes • are
-against the whole mentality not
only of the- Polish Government,
but of the entire Polish nation.
"These brutal gangster attacks
are being carried out by organ-
ized bands of .reactionary ele-
ments in Poland who think that
by making pogroms they will not
only harm the Jews, but also the
democratic regime of Poland,"
the statement emphasized. "The
gangsters usually come out of the
woods and kill not only Jews, but
also Polish soldiers and militia-
men. Jews can be sure 'that our
government will take the neces-
sary measures to bring these

Bring Peace to Mankind

All mankind joins with the People of Isrel in the prayers

that will be uttered upon the advent of the Jewish New

Year 5'706—that there shall be an end to wars, that our

peace shall be a lasting one, that nation shall not make war

upon nation any more. Through the realization of the

Prophecy of Isaiah, we may hope for that security which

will make men kin and' which will eradicate hatreds from
