Szyk (riglet) War Satires and. Miniatures at New York Art Gallery.
In the background is one of Mr. Szyk's most famous works,
'Arsenal for Democracy".
Described by the well known American art critic, Thomas
Craven, as a man "turned by righteous indignation into anti-
Fascist wrath," Szyk's works are characterized as "relentlessly
depicting in line and color the evils and horrors of Fascism and
Nazism, and the sinister operations of butchers and traitors every-
where".
Before the war, Szyk was famous for his illuminations of the
Hagadah and the Book of Job.

A FABLE
The Division
Of the Earth
By DR. N, E. ARONSTAM
OP
"Take the worldl" Thus spoke
the - Lord of the World from his
celestial heights to the denizens
of the earth. "Take the world,
it's yours. It is your heritage for
all eternity. But mind that you
share and share alike!"
Mankind hurried and scurried
to divide the earth among itself;
young and 'old were on the alert
to get the most of. it. The hus-
bandman haggled over acreage;
the hunter demanded the plains,
mountains and rivers and the
fullness thereof. The merchant
was all ears and eyes to fill his
coffers with gold and precious
stones; the priest fought for the
splendor of his temples, dei
gloria,
The rulers barricaded all high-
ways and bridges and demanded
tithes and taxes to uphold the
ruling classes. Everyone grasp-
ed, grabbed and appropriated the
resources and revenues of the
earth. But one came' too late,
a long time after the earth was
divided. He was the poet, the
writer, the thinker, the artist, the
dreamer, the scientist. He came
from a long distance unaware of
the allotment. But, alas, there
was nothing for him to take, for
everything had its owner and
master.
"Woe unto me!" he cried in
despair. "Am I the only one left
out, forgotten and forsaken?
Lord, I, Thine most faithful son,
left out of the world. Woe unto
me! What shall I do?"
He lamented, he wailed and de-
plored his' unhappy fate, until
his complaint reached the throne
of God. He summoned him for a
hearing.
"What would you?" the Lord
inquired. "You have always liv-
ed in the realm of dreams: Don't
blame Me! Where were you when
I gave the world to mankind to
share and share alike and divide
for its benefit and happiness.
Where were you?
"I was," the poet replied, "with
Thee, 0, Lord. My eyes hung
upon Thine countenance and my
ears harkened to the harmonies
of the spheres. Forgive the spirit,
which illumined by Thy light lost
sight of the gains of 'worldly
goods."
"What is to be done?" The
Almighty was in a quandry. "The
world has been divided; it's lost
to you. The .harvest, the hunt,
the marts, neither of these could
you claim. But tarry! Anytime
you desire to live with Me in My
heavenly domains you are always
more than welcome. Come when-
ever you like."
Here endeth the fable.

The fourth was sentenced to
eight years at hard labor.
The presiding judge character-
ized the condemned men as
"bloodthirsty brutes whose men-
tality is the best index to the
Nazi character." He said that all
Nazis whose participation' in the
mass-murder of Jews could be
shown would be brought to .
justice.
