British Warship Brings, Back 'Illegal Immigrants' Who Spent
5 Years on Island in Indian Ocean; Jews Close Shops
to Hail Returnees at Haifa

HAIFA (JPS-Palcor)—Forcibly
deported from Palestine in 1941
as "illegal immigrants" and told
by the government that they
never would be permitted to re-
turn, 1,305 Jewish refugees
interned on Mauritius Island in
the Indian Ocean ever since, were
repatriated to Palestine aboard
the British warship Franconia
Aug. 26. Thousands of Jewish
residents thronged the harbor and
vicinity in a spontaneous, up-
roarious welcome.
Their deportation five years
ago caused incomparable tension
as Jewish Palestine learned that
they were aroused in the middle
of the night, driven out of their
barracks at the Atlith camp,
loaded into vans, many of them
only half-clad, forced aboard the
ship, struggling with their
captors.
When news spread throughout
Palestine that the Fronconia,
known to be returning the
Mauritius . internees, .was sighted
off Haifa, Jews closed their shops,
workers left jobs and rushed to-
ward the harbor.
From Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem,
too, and from distant colonies
people set out for Haifa to greet
the internees, many of whom
have children, brothers and sis-
ters and other kin in Palestine.
With the refugees on the Fran-
conia were representatives of the
Jewish. Agency who had sped
earlier on official word, to assist

Latin-American Jews

Hit 'One-Stop Experts,'
Author Josephs Says

WASHINGTON, (JPS) — The
600,000 Jews in communities all
over Latin-America, "are anx-
ious to cooperate with their
North American brethren in all
Jewish affairs, but feel that such
cooperation will be limited until
there is mutual understanding
between them and us," Ray
Josephs, author of "Argentine
Diary," asserts in an article ap-
pearing in the National Jewish
Monthly, published by Bnai
Brith.
Latin-American Jewish com-
munities "want no more hop-
skip-and-jump visitors who fly.
to South America for a brief
stay and then return to New
York as 'experts'," Mr. Josephs
says. They don't want Jewish
leaders from New York and else
where "to .handle them in the
same way Latinos in general
feel Uncle Sam handled them in
the past. They want no Yankee
imperialism in inter-American
Jewish relationships."

barkment of the passengers. All
screening, sifting and registra-
tion had been completed by the
time the ship anchored.
Dr. Bernard Joseph, • acting
chief of the Political Department
of the Jewish Agency Executive,
boarded the ship and greeted the
arrival s. Haifa was bedecked
with flags. The stevedores un-
loading the ship and removing
the passengers by lighter to the
dock were all Jews of the Ogen
Transport Co. The majority of
the arrivals were taken to rest
houses to convalesce, while
children, of whom there are 139,
and youths left for Kibutzim
(collective settlements), for the
newly built Jewish Agency flats
or to stay with relatives.
Two died en route to Palestine.
They are: Zelig Folkman, 60, and
Martha Levy, 55, both unmarried.

Jewish Congress
Takes Orders for
Overseas Parcels

MUNICH (JTA) — American
military authorities have dis-
covered in a private home here
many documents belonging to the
Office for Research on Jewish
Problems established by the
Nazis under the supervision of
the notorious anti-Semite Alfred
Rosenberg. A valuable collection
of ancient Jewish liturgical
manuscripts was also found.
American authorities also re-
ported that they have discovered
files proving that the Nazis had
mapped plans to exterminate all
Jews in Europe. The plans were
prepared under the supervision of
Hermann Goering, who as the
files show, ordered the Gestapo
to carry them out.
At the invitation of Reinhard
Heydrich, Gestapo leader who
later was assassinated in Czecho-
slovakia, 13 high Nazi and gov-
ernment leaders held a special
conference on Jan. 20, 1942, at
which they discussed the com-
plete annihilation of all Euro-
pean Jews, the records reveal.
