Full Scale Support Urged

NEW YORK—Vast tasks in
postwar reconstruction overseas

be undertaken immediately by
the Jews of the U. S. through
the instrumentality of the

`Disciples of Wise'
Incorporates Views
Of American Rabbis

The beliefs and pronounce-
ments of American rabbis of the
Reform, Conservative and Or-
thodox sections regarding main
areas of thought are analyzed
and compared in "Disciples of
the Wise," by Rabbi Joseph
Zeitlin, Ph.D., recently pub-
lished by the Bureau of Publi-
cations, Teachers College, Co-
lumbia University, in its con-
tributions to education series.
Among those who have highly
praised the book are such emi-
nent clergymen as Dr. Harry
Emerson Fosdick of the River-
side Church; Dr. Mordecai M.
Kaplan, professor of homiletics,
Jewish Theological Seminary,
and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise,
president of the Jewish Institute
of Religion.
The nine major cases on which
data were secured via a ques-
tionnaire were theology, prob-
lems of Jewish life and adjust-
ment, the social function of re-
ligion, economic reconstruction,
education, civil liberties, peace
and internationalism, race rela-
tioil.), and sex equality and
sexual morality.
Of the generally-held opin-
ions, as deduced by correlating
the replies, several are of espe-
cial interest. The Conservative
and Orthodox groups were pre-
ponderantly nationalistic in their
approach to Jewish life and
problems while the Reform
group is about equally divided
in this respect. The rabbinate in
all its wings was found to be
in favor of increasing social re-
sponsibility for the welfare and
security of the individual and
is decidedly pro-labor. The rab-
binate unanimously favored so-
cial responsibility for extending
education beyond its present
level.
"Disciples of the Wise" is a
significant contribution to the
study of the forces which fash-
ion public opinion in the U.S.

The statement, issued on the
occasion of the end of World
War II, emphasized that victory
has opened up opportunities for
full-scale assistance in the re-
habilitation of the shattered
lives of the Jews of Europe and

Gen. MacArthur
Sends Holy Day
Greetings to Jews

MANILA, (JTA)—Gen. Doug-
las McArthur, supreme com-
mander of the Allied forces in
Japan, has issued the following
message of greetings to Jews on
the occasion of Rosh Hashanah:
"The Jewish High Holy Days,
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip-
pur, with their emphasis on the
Judgment of the Lord and man's
need of penitence, are important
observances in the year when de-
struction and devastation have
reached such great proportions. .
"Victor and vanquished alike

stand under the judgment of Al-
mighty God. Efforts and sacri-
fices of these years find justifi-
cation in a bright new world, and
men everywhere must pause in
humility and prayer before God.
"Your ancient traditional High
Holy Days are to all men a wor-
thy reminder of Him whose
goodness and mercy extend to
all m an ind."

I believe that Jewish wisdom
is more all-human and universal
than any other; and this not
only because of its immemorial
age, not only because it is the
firstborn, but also because of
the powerful humaneness tha t
saturates it, because of its high
estimate of man.—Maxim Gorky.
