THE 'JEWISH NEWS Friday, Sepfember 7, 1945 Culinary Suggestions By Mildred Grosberg Bellin Here is a recipe that has always been popular. It is a tempting des- sert but can also be served as a side- dish in place of potatoes or may be eaten cold as a snack. It requires only inexpensive ingredients which are readily available. Kugel: Soak 5 rolls in cold water, then squeeze dry. Place in a mixing bowl, and add 1/2 cup of chicken or goose fat cut into tiny pieces, 4 eggs, 1 cup of flour, 3/2 cup of sugar, and 3/4 cup of cracker meal. Mix well, and stir in 1/2 teaspoonof salt, a pinch of pep- per, and 3/4 teaspoon of cinna- mon and allspice. Cut 4 apples, or 3 apples and 2 pears, into small pieces and stir into the bat- ter. Cover the bottom of an iron pot with fat 114 inch deep. Pour in the batter, and place a few pieces of apple on top. Pour 1 cup of 'cold water over the pudding, and bake in a moderate oven for 3 hours, until well baked and brown. * * Pot Roast The less expensive cuts of meat—which today are easier to get than choice cuts—may be the basis of attractive, flavorful menus. In this recipe for Pot Roast with Tomato Gravy, prelimin- ary browning in bottled salad oil and long cooking over a slow fire bring out the full meat fla- vor of an inexpensive blade oast. Tomato juice adds its own zestful flavor to this economical roast. The following recipe will pro- vide 6-8 servings: 4 to 5 pound pot roast; 4 tablespoons bottled salad oil; 1 clove garlic, if desired; 1,', teaspoon marjoram or thyme; Yz cup vinegar; 1 cup water; 2 teaspoons salt; 1,14 teaspoon pepper; cups bottled tomato juice; 4 table- spoons flour; small onions, small carrots. Palestine Tranquility Laid to Arab Disunity - --- LONDON (JTA) — In the opinion of some senior British officials, Palestine is living "on the slopes of a volcano," the Jerusalem correspondent of the London Times says, giving the following reason why trouble has not yet broken out: The Arabs are hopelessly di- vided and cannot present a united front on a single question; Jew- ish public opinion has been out- raged and frightened by the terrorism which was frequent several months ago and has been thrown on the side of the author- ities; and the efficient reorgan- ization and expansion of the police force. Superficially, the correspond- ent writes, Palestine remains un- usually tranquil, "but the real danger would come should some event bring into the arena the bulk of the Jewish population, which contains large numbers of armed trained men and women." cheese, and place a mound of the cheese in the center of each square. Wet the edges with cold water and fold up to form little bags. Seal well. Place in a greased baking pan about. an inch deep, with the sealed edges underneath. Have enough space between the bags to permit ris- ing. Bake 10 minutes at 350 de- grees F., then pour two cups of tomato sauce over the dumplings. Continue baking for 15 minutes longer. Serve each dumpling with some of the sauce. Veal Salad Combine 2 cups of dicekcook- ed veal, 1 cup of diced celery, 1 /4 cup of minced green pepper and 3/4 cup of French Dressing. Chill 30 minutes. Add 1/2 cup of either Russian Dressing, Chive Mayonnaise or Horseradish May- onnaise. Serve on escarole, and garnish with tomato wedges and 1/2 cup of the dressing that was used in the salad. To make Chive Mayonnaise add 2 tablespoons of finely cut chives to 1 cup of mayonnaise. Horseradish May- onnaise is made by adding 2 tablespoons of prepared horse- radish to 1 cup of mayonnaise. Berlin Jews List Nazi Atrocities BERLIN, (JTA)—Leaders of the restored Jewish community in Berlin submitted a memoran- dum to the Allied authorities giving a summary -of measures taken by the Germans in the Reich against the Jews, begin- ning with 1933 when Hitler came to power. The memorandum, prepared at the request of the Allied au- thorities, reveals one instance when the Reichsvereinigung of Jews in Germany, central Jew- ish body under the Nazi regime, successfully sabotaged Gestapo orders and prevented deporta- tion of 2,310 Jews. Among the Berlin Jewish leaders executed or deported to extermination camps were: Dr. Otto Hirsch, president of the Reichsvereinigung of the Jews in Germany, Dr. Martin Brasch, Dr. Conrad Conn, Bruno Men- delsohn, Otto Goldstein, Fritz Lamm, Julius Blumenthal, Al- fred Selbiger, Alfred Joseph, George Juliusburger, Dr. Ep- stein, Dr. Levy, Miss Wagner, Dr. Loser and Dr. Bukofzer. Kovno Jewish Leader Slain Defying Nazis JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The story of the heroic death at the hands of the Germans of Isaac Bloch, a leader of the Lithuanian Betar, a Revisionist organization, was disclosed this week when troops of the Jewish Brigade, now stationed in Austria, en- countered liberated Lithuanian Jews. According to a lettter from one of the Brigaders, Bloch was among several hundred Jews whom the Gestapo collected in a Kovno synagogue. He strode to the platform before the Nazis realized what he was dding, he shouted: "You Germans won't destroy our people. Brother Jews," he continued, turning toward the prisoners, "be prepared to die for the glory of God." Before he could go on, a Gestapo man fired at him.
