Successor Writes
A Glowing Tribute
To Late Mr. Miller

Rabbi, 90, and Wife
Arrested Crossing
Frontier Into Zion

JERUSALEM (JPS---Palcor)—

Ninety-year-old Rabbi Ezra Reu-
beni of Iraq, his wife and son,
are among a group of Jews who
have been secretly held-lor weeks
in the ancient Acre jail after
they were caught by police cross-
ing the frontier from • Syria into
Palestine.
Some of the group have al-
ready been returned to Syria,
and 14 others face deportation.
The Acre prison is a notorious
rat-hole, evoking §ad association
in the minds of Jews because
Jewish 'self defense leaders have
been among those sentenced to
imprisonment in its subterranean
cells ever since the 1920's when
the first Arab riots broke out in
Palestine.
The aged Rabbi Reubeni has
six children living in Palestine
who have been pleading for per-
mission for their parents to re-
main in the country. The chil-
dren are sufficiently well situat-
ed to be able to take care of their
parents.

President, The. Jewish Publication
Society of America
(Mr. Simon Miller died in Philadel-
phia on Sunday, Aug. 12. This appre-
ciation is written by his immediate
successor.)

al, historical and poetical, juve-
nile and judicial. His prime com-
munal activities for nearly half a
century wash the Jewish publica-

tion Society of which 'he . was
president from 1913' to 1933.
Originally elected to the board"
of trustees in 1898, he became
vice-president' 10 years later and
succeeded Edwin Wolf as head
of the Society in 1913.
Jewish scholars and authors
realized that in Miller they had
a real friend who encouraged
their research and literary efforts
with publication and wide distri-
bution of their books. ,

AmeriCa had the perception,

understanding, and the driving
force to see that these and other
volumes were published, with the
realization that the written words
of great Jewish students, schol-,
ars and authors should be pre.
served for posterity. Written in
English, available for all inter-,
ested in Jewish literature, Miller
carefully laid the foundations for
"Jewish Books in every Jewish
Home."

Associated with Him

Associated with Simon Miller
in directing literary activities of
The Jewish Publication Society
were other Philadelphia laymen
—Judge Mayer Sulzburger, Dr.
Cyrus Adler, Justice Horace
Stern, Dr. Solomon Solis-Cohen
and others.
During Miller's presidency the
new Bible translation was com-
.pleted and published; Marx and
Margolis' comprehensive one vol-
ume" History of the Jews" 'was
issued, which has since been
translated into three foreign
languages; funds were raised for
the establishment of the Press Di-
vision of. The Society; 'The Schiff
Library of Jewish Classics and
the Jewish Community Series
were started.
