ever go wild!
DEXTER R'E'SIDENTS by the
corner gas station on Monterey
had the time of their life . .
Free beer served beneath a Jap
hung high in effigy) . • . and out-
door dancing to a four-piece
colored band which blared red-
hot boogie woogie while the kids
burned -.their soles jitterbugging
. . . It didn't take folks long to
hear about it and they swarm-
ed from all over.,
THERE WERE parties galore
and it was probably the first
.
time for many that the tenants
downstairs didn't complain . . .
They were upstairs themselves,
knocking down their own ceil-
ing! -
THOSE WHO saw an uniden-
tified gent get a bag of water
squarely on his balding pate
thought he was a good sport
about it . . . Very sedately cast
it off with a shrug of his wet
shoulders and smilingly looked
up . . . as another loaded bag
plopped in his face.
THE SCENES were many . .
One woman just wheeled her
buggy along Linwood Ave., and
let her baby do all the hollaring
. . . Some kids in a -orokeri-down
convertible carried a coffin with
one of the boys painted up like
a Jap and lying in it.
An older woman sort of for- .
got her dignity and • stood on the
corner of 12th and • Clairmount
blowing her paper horn in every-
one's face..,. Another lady
down the street was throWing
confetti. in the hair of passers-
by . Her eyes were' slightly
watered . . . but with • joy . . .
She has a son out there.
OF COURSE, the Wednesday
and Thursday scenes weren't too
mild, either . . . Imagine driv-
ing up to a gas station again and
saying, "Fill 'er up!" with com-
fort . ; . 'Twas unbelievable . .
Especially when you actually got
your windshield wiped off!
