Mrs. Herschel V. Kreger, President of Detroit \Section of
NCJW, Announces Voluntary Increase in Quota;
National Officers Praise Action

NEW YORK—In recognition
of the greatly expanded Service
to Foreign Born program of the
National Council of Jewish

• MRS. HERSCHEL V: KREGER

Women, and its new overseas
project, the Detroit Section has
voluntarily raised its 1945 quota
from $6,000 to $10,000, it was an-
nounced by Mrs. Herman B.
Levine, chairman of Council's
executive committee.
The news of Detroit's action
was made known' in a letter to
Mrs. Levine from Mrs. Herschel
V. Kreger, president of the De-
troit Section of the National
Council of Jewish Women, who
wrote:
"At a special emergency meet-
ing of our board, it was voted un-
animously to increase the 1945
- quota to National for its Service

tribution. We are in full sym-
pathy and understanding with
our national program and con-
sider it an honor to be able to
do our share toward the further-
ance of the fine and vital work
now going on."
Activities Praised
In commenting on the Detroit
Section's assumption of added
responsibilities, Mrs. Levine said
that "the officers and executive
committee of the National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women accept this
added contribution from the
Detroit Section as a recognition
of the work of our new over-
seas project, and the aremend-
ously expanded program of our
Service to Foreign Born depart-
ment, especially in the field of
locations. • We are receiving over
1,000 requests a month from Am-
ericans seeking relatives abroad,
and happily, since V-E Day, we
are effecting a minimum of 100
locations a month. Although it
hasn't been officially announced,
it is proper that, in view of its
new contribution, Detroit should
be the first to know that Council
has already engaged its first two
overseas workers, who will work
abroad as a Council unit in co-
operation with the Joint Distrib-
ution Co m m i t tee. Additional
workers are being interviewed,
and if -other Sections follow
Detroit's magnificent example,
we will be enabled to add a
greater number of members to
the staff of our Oversdas unit.
Mrs. Welt's Leadership
"We, here, are also conscious
of the fact. that Detroit's gen-
erous action should and must be
considered as a tribute to our
national president, Mildred G.
Welt, a native of Detroit, Ind a
former president of the Detroit
Section of Council. Mrs. Welt
has brought to Council an inspir-
ed- leadership, one which you
who know her 'well, can well
appreciate."
The National Council of. Jew-
ish Women is this year seeking
$250,000 to finance both its, Ser-
vice to Foreign Born depart-
ment and its Overseas, unit. Of
this amount, $150,000 is-allocated
for Councit'S four point Service
to Foreign Born •program—in-
ternatiOnal case work, which in-
cludes locations; port and dock;
social adjustment, which in-
cludes its work at the Oswego
refugee • camp; and naturaliza-
tion. For its Overseas project,
Council- will send a group of
child-care workers to • operate
as a service unit cooperating
with the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee. The Council workers
will specialize in seervicing the
thousands of homeless and or-
phan children now wandering
throughout Europe.
