HOUSE OF A THOUSAND SCANDALS
Talmudic Tales
By DAVID MORANTZ
Big Three Decisions
(Based upon the ancient legends and philosophy found in
the Talmud and folklore of the Jewish people dating back
as far as 3,000 years).
The Potsdam Declaration issued by Presi-
dent Truman, Prime Minister Attlee and
Generalissimo Stalin declares that—
"All Nazi ilaWs which provided the
basis of the Hitler Regime or estab-
lished discrimination on grounds of
race, creed or political opinion shall be
abolished.
•
"No such discriminations, whether
legal, administrative or otherwise, shall
be tolerated.
' "War criminals and . those who have
participated in planning or carrying out
Nazi enterprises involving or resulting
in atrocities or war crimes shall be ar-
rested and brought to judgment."
It has hiterto been assumed that this will
be the policy of the leaders of the United
Nations.
Now—this is - a matter of record as policy
in dealing with the Nazi criminals.
It is encouraging to know that this will
be the law of the new world planned by the --
victorious democratic powers of the world.
But it is eizen more important that these
decisions should be enforced.
THE WISDOM OF DAVID
When Saul was king of Israel, a very rich
man died bequeathing his entire estate to his
widow.
Some time thereafter; she decided to visit
relatives in a distant city and being unable, to
carry her wealth with her, she put it in honey
jars, pouring honey over the top to conceal the
gold.
She then asked a neighbor if she might leave
her jars of honey in her care until she returned.
The neighbor was glad to oblige and the widow
started her journey feeling that she had securely
hidden her treasure.
One day, however, the neighbor was busy pre-
paring for her son's wedding when she found
she needed more honey and did not have time
to go to the-market for it. She said to herself:
"I shall borrow some of the widow's hon ey
and ?replace it before she returns."
Lifting one jar to pout out some honey, im-
agine her surprise to see" a stream of - gold coins
come out with the honey.
This impelled her to examine the other jars
and when she found gold in all of them, she
took the gold, which she concealed, and filled all
the jars again with honey so they appeared ex-
actly as when they had been left in her care.
When the owner . called for her jars and took
them to her home, she found the honey—but the
gold was gone. -
She took the case to court, but .having no
proof that the jars had contained gold, the judge
was compelled to dismiss her case.
She then appealed to King Saul, but without
witnesses or proof, he could not help her either.
Leaving the palace, she wandered aimlessly
about as though in a daze when she met David,
the shepherd. boy, in whom she confided her
trouble.

In 1943 when the Labor Party reaffirmed its traditional
policy in Palestine, Professor Harold Laski, chairman of the
Labor Party Executive, said:
"We accept the right of the Jewish people to develop
in Palestine their homeland, and we regret that there
should appear in any part of the policy of any Gov-
ernment of the United Nations a trickle of appeasement
in relation to this matter where that appeasement has
dparted from all other aspects of our policy.
Basic principles are involved in these declarations, and
it is sincerely to be hoped that they will be strictly ad-
hered to. They can be made part of the world peace pro-
gram without antagonizing the Arabs, since "the fruits of
victory" MUST be shared by the suffering Jews of Europe.
This time, the pleas of Dr: Weizmann and the other Zionist
leaders must not fall on deaf ears.
The United States government . also has a moral obliga-
tion to help speed the realization of Jewish hopes in Pales-
tine. Our government is a party to the various agreements
on Palestine, and both the Democratic and Republican
parties stand committed to pledges for a speedy establish-
ment of the Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine.
For the sake of the peace of the world, and in the
interests of justice, Palestine's doors must be opened at
once to free Jewish immigration and Jews must be given
the opportunity to mould thir own destiny in the Land of
Israel.
parties. You might clip them and save them for
the reopening of your Jewish- school.
Game of Bible Characters
In preparation for the game the leaders should
write - on small slips of paper the , names of
Biblical characters, one name on each. The num-
ber of these slips should. exceed considerably
the number of players. Before- the game begins
the leader pins one slip on the back of each
player, at the same time instructing them not
to tell each other the names pinned - on their
backs. When every member has his slip pinned
on him, the players are told that they may
carry on conversation with any of the other
players and that each is to try to guess on the
basis of hints which he receives, what special
character he represents. Thus, if one has the
name of Noah, pinned to his back, a member
may ask him: "Were you seasick on your great
adventure?" or "Did Barnum learn the circus
business from you?" etc. As soon as a player
guesses the name on his back he informs the
leader, who gives him the slip and pins a new
one on him. The 'player guessing the most slips
wins the game.
Who Do I Represent in the Bible?
The leader pins to the back of each member
a slip with the name of a well-known Biblical
character, such as Abraham, Moses, David,
Isaiah, Deborah, etc. Then each one of the •mem-
hers is called up to the front of the room (or
in the middle of the circle), and asks the mem-
bers, "who do I represent in the Bible?" From
the comments of the members, the piayer must
guess his or her character.
